100th Birthday quilt received...almost killed him...

My second cousin, who will be 100 years old in July, received the quilt I made him today. He called and, yelled (he's hard of hearing....like really, he can't hear at all...lol!) his excitement at receiving it. He's super sentimental and we have a bond so it goes without saying how happy he was. I spoke with his wife and she said my gift nearly killed him. Lol! Apparently, he's already called my local family and bragged....invited people over to see it. If I know him. He'll drag it to church on Sunday. She shared that he told her he wants to be buried in it when he dies at the age of 110. Lol....such a charactor...just love this man....

Isn't it wonderful when someone really appreciates the quilt you made for them?!?

Stitchnripper 04-11-2018 02:56 PM

That is a sweet story!

osewme 04-11-2018 04:45 PM

Sounds like a very, very happy cousin. Did you take a picture of it before you sent it off? I'd love to see it. Aren't you glad you made it for him?

liking quilting 04-11-2018 05:27 PM

Do get a photo of him with that quilt!

SillySusan 04-11-2018 05:31 PM

What a wonderful reaction for his new quilt! He sounds like a very happy man. What a great sense of humor. Let's hope that the quilt will be very well-worn before he needs to be buried with it. LOL!!

Blueridgebeverly 04-11-2018 05:31 PM

That made me smile! What a joy he must be and you a great cousin to give him the perfect gift.

maryb119 04-11-2018 05:43 PM

It is wonderful when someone appreciates a quilt and lets you know it! You must be so proud! You made his day!

yes, I did, and shared on the pictures thread a couple of weeks ago but here it is again...and I was very happy to have made this for him....I knew he would be happy just not quite this reaction. He is a hoot and we typically write each other because of his hearing issues. He types his letters using 2 fingers. He really is precious and I wish he lived closer....he lives in Pennsylvania and me in California...

Blueridgebeverly 04-11-2018 06:06 PM

Beautiful!

Judith1005 04-11-2018 06:12 PM

Aw Teen, best reaction ever. Makes you feel awesome inside. I can tell how much you love and appreciate him.

Grace creates 04-11-2018 06:34 PM

Both your story and the quilt are beautiful and made me smile

Teen 04-11-2018 06:41 PM

Just a bit of a side story....he and his wife have been married for 77 years. She is a British war bride and is just as precious. My last visit...about 7 years ago, he made me his Dandolion wine, which was delicious, and gave me a tour of my mom's (his 1st cousin) hometown where he still resides. If I have a question about any family history, I write him and ask. When my family loses him, it will be a great loss...but that won't happen for another 10 years...lol!

quiltsRfun 04-11-2018 06:42 PM

How wonderful that he was so excited by your beautiful quilt. It's not often you get a reaction like that.

quiltingshorttimer 04-11-2018 10:07 PM

what a great reaction! Do get him to record some of that family history--maybe send him some interview type questions and ask him to record the things he remembers. What a treasure!

A WWII Vet from church became a friend to us and I make him a Vet's quilt--he loved it and actually did have it covering his casket at the funeral. I was so glad that his DIL got the quilt as she'd taken him on the WWII trip to D.C. that was so important to him.

Oistin 04-12-2018 03:01 AM

Beautiful story! But please have him take a picture of him with the quilt and you can have it for memories.

KwiltyKahy 04-12-2018 03:39 AM

How wonderful. The quilt is beautiful but the response is outstanding. I know that feeling when you get a response like that and it is to be treasured.

Jane Quilter 04-12-2018 03:54 AM

what a great story. better grab that family history info while you can. nobody is getting any younger...lol

SusieQOH 04-12-2018 04:06 AM

He's 100 and still able to get excited over things- how wonderful!!!!!!
What a great story, Teen! He sounds like a doll.

Battle Axe 04-12-2018 04:14 AM

If he is on your Mom's side, I hope you got some of his genes.

We had a little lady in our town who was in WWII. She was a nurse serving in North Africa. She started a relationship with the hospital supply SGT. Things were hard to get in those days, but he made sure she got what she needed. They got married when they got home and she became the school nurse. She also got a trip to Wash DC to be honored. She lived to be 99.

Reading this makes me smile...what a great story and a great family member. Your quilt is beautiful. Please have him send a pic of him and his quilt and let us see his smile!

Boston1954 04-12-2018 05:11 AM

I bet that put a smile on your face. I would love to see a picture of him holding it.

Annie68 04-12-2018 05:22 AM

Loved that story, I'd be some excited to get that quilt too, gorgeous!

Barb in Louisiana 04-12-2018 05:39 AM

Your quilt is wonderful! Such great colors for a guy. It is so rewarding to have someone really like something you have created for him.

What is the pattern name or did you design it yourself? I have some batiks that would look good in that design and a bunch of jelly rolls that I have been trying to figure out what to do with. I do hope the color blocks start with 2 1/2". Oh well, if they don't, they will when I get through!

luvstoquilt 04-12-2018 05:48 AM

Delightful story! Love your quilt..please get a picture of your cousin with it and share it with us...

feline fanatic 04-12-2018 05:59 AM

There is no greater reward to us quilters than a response to a gifted quilt like you describe. It is so nice when our labor of love is recognized and appreciated as such. I remember when you posted that quilt in photos and its so wonderful to read the follow up story. Thanks for sharing with us.

leonf 04-12-2018 07:40 AM

My M-I L was a quilter. We covered her coffin with one of her quilts. She would have liked that.

The pattern is called Granny's Insanity and is free on the Moda Bake Shop. It does, indeed, use 2 1/2 strips. I used jelly roll for colored and yardage for neutral.... It's a fun pattern...super easy...
