I have noticed this year there are not as many as in the past. I miss them, I plant plenty of flowers for them plus feeders. We have had record breaking heat here this year.

A few years ago we had a MAJOR decline in Hummers. Thought maybe it was the winter in Central America, someone had better food.... But they are back in force this summer almost a quart a day from 1 quart every 2-4 days last year. We also have more bees this year as in the past. Mother Nature is a strange thing.

We don't have very many this year. I think I've only seen 3-4.

We are going through almost 2 lbs. of sugar a DAY!! Here's a video I uploaded that's focused on ONE feeder. (we have 6 feeders hanging) This was filmed June 9, 2011 (enjoy) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SaGk4ozYjVY |

My husband who stays at home all day, just mentioned to me the other day, that he was wondering why he has seen near as many hummingbirds this year. We saw them all the time last summer. I got several pictures and even a video or two of them, so I thought I'd share a couple of pics for those who haven't seen any flirting around.

I also usually have all kinds of hummingbirds. would sit on the deck and watch them. This year maybe 1 or 2. sad I miss them

I have also noticed that my feeders have not been visited much this year so far but I thought it was because of the secadas this year. We had a very heavy covering of them this spring and summer. They were everywhere and very loud. We couldn't sit outside and talk because of the noise. They are gone now and I have seen more of the birds, but not like the years past. Hope they come more often now and for the rest of the summer.
They are just fascinating to watch. Last year one flew into our glass door and knocked himself out. I picked him up and stroked his stomach and he was able to fly away. That was very exciting! |
Our numbers have been way down the last 4 years. I read once that birds will change locations to allow their food source to develop, which can take a few plus years, then they return. I hope so because we only seen a couple here so far this year.

I noticed that last year. I have them back this year, but not as many. Yes, these little guys are being effected by the same environmental changes that are causing the death of so many other animals.

We have 3 humming bird feeders and its like an airport with all their comming and going. They empty the feeders in a day and half. We also have a bird bath in the front of the house that the bigger birds like to use.
