I hope this doctor is magnificiently compensated; this is bigger than, maybe, open heart surgery!

I agree, Jan. Burns are so terrible and do leave such awful scars. I knew that new skin could be grown, but this is amazing. God bless the people who conceived this and may it be put into major mass production for the entire world to use.

craftymatt2 02-20-2011 04:36 PM

WOW, that is just amazing, I wonder who invented it and how long it took them to build.

Sandee 02-20-2011 04:39 PM

Amazing!! In the mid 70's, really before "modern" techniques were around, or even many burn centers, we took the patients to Physical Therapy, put them in a giant whirlpool called a Hubbard tank & scrubbed the dead ,dying, burned skin off with gauze & scrub brushes. We peeled it off, cut it off using twizzers & scissors. Yep, they had had pain meds but they were awake. Many badly burned 2nd & 3rd degree. It would have been so wonderful for them all if this was around!! Did you notice how few scars the patient in the video had? NONE!? WOW WOW WOW. It shouldn't be experimental, all burn pts. should be having it available now. Thanks, Ditter, for this informative & amazing video!

galvestonangel 02-20-2011 05:17 PM

Amazing. I don't understand why it is still experimental when it could be helping so many people now. They need to move faster on this.

Had to pass this along to everyone I know!!! Our son, years ago, was working at Kaiser Aluminum and fell into some hot metal. He was rushed to the ER. The burns were on his hands and his buttox. WOW, if only we had been aware of it back then, his suffering would have been so much less. He is fine now and no longer works there.

Sorry to hear about your son's accident. Having worked in an Aluminum plant (Reynold's Metals in McCook. Illinois) in their medical department those metal burns are probably the worse burns one can have. So many impurities in the molting metal. Glad he's fine now.

It sure was hard working on the burn units back then...we've come a long, long way since then...much of it thanks of NASA.

Ditter,
You always have an important message. I was burned as a child, and I can relate to never having the disfigurement from burns. Amazing! Thank you for this. -Kelly

Basically it's a spray gun. They remove stem cells from the skin of the burn victim, then spray them on the wound. The problem with burns has always been infection. They've tried growing skin, but it takes quite awhile for the skin "patch" to grow. This is a very fast method of covering the burn with the patient's own cells to form a barrier against infection and, of course, to speed new skin formation.

Ditter--thank you for posting this! It's truly an amazing breakthrough for burn victims!
I have to admit, though, when I saw your post, I thought that it would be something funny...

Hi Ditter, couldn't get your message because it was blocked here in the U.K. However I just wanted to tell you that I always look out for your funny jokes, they do so cheer me up. At the moment I am really in need of that. I am on mophine patches to control pain and after years of producing work for helping various causes I feel I cannot cope.I know that these feelings are wrong,I have so much to be thankful for, a loving husband and son plus good friends.I have even left my church because I feel my thoughts are not worthy of the gifts I have been given.Wow, I really am sounding off, please forgive but this site always gives such support and for the first time I feel in need. I always have my fathers words in my mind, he used to say whatever was the problem " It will go off".True enough. Am thinking I should just delete this, sounds like a " Oh poor me" message. It's helped just getting it down though. Love this site, Letty.

svenskaflicka1 02-21-2011 11:36 AM

this is incredible. one of my least favorite cases to do has historically been anesthesia for burn debridement. this speed and depth of healing is nothing short of miraculous. now i have to go and research....fabulous!

Tawnya's Mom 02-21-2011 01:19 PM

How wonderful! Thanks for sharing. My husband just had some robotic surgery done on Friday and is home and doing well. It is amazing that technology has come so far.

Susanb 02-21-2011 02:45 PM

Ditter43 thank you so much! My Dad just suffered terrible second degree burns on both his hands trying to put out a kitchen fire. I'm going to check with his treating doctor to see if this 'skin cell gun' is available. THANK YOU for sharing!

kathome 02-21-2011 06:01 PM

I just posted this on my Facebook for more people to see.

Thanks, Ditter.

Quilt Mom 02-22-2011 05:25 AM

Wow! What a technique! I know the long, drawn-out process previously used for burns. This sounds amazing, that it was healed in 4 days. three cheers for the researchers and doctors willing to use new techniques!
