The Andy Griffith Show

What is your favorite episode, and why?

I love "The Pickle Story". I've seen it many times. The expressions on their faces as they try to eat the kerosene cucumbers. :)

I like the episode where Andy intervenes when a farmer won't let his daughter date. The farmer has no sons and he wants his daghter to fill the void and act like a farmer. Andy enlists the help of his lady friends to get a makevoer done on the daughter. He has her hair and makeup done and she changes out of her overalls and puts on a dress. She looks like a different person. Then the hired hands show an interest in her and the father is not happy until Andy points out that he is likely to end up with a man's help on his farm if he lets nature take its course. I have probably watched every episode of the Andy Griffith Show.

That one is funny:-) I really like the episode called "Ellie saves a Female". Ellie helps transform a hardworking farm girl (Frankie) into a lady. It just highlights how versatile women are.

It sounds as though I had a few details wrong, but ekuw & I are talking about the same episode. It's been a lot of years since I watched the show. Barney was my favorite character.

I have been a fan of Andy Griffith since the 45 record that recorded his funny "What It Was Was Football". I think it came out in the early 50's. We get "Mayberry RFD" here on ME TV, and my favorites are the ones where Barney gets outwitted by crooks and Andy has to save him without Barney losing face.

I also loved "Onionhead".

Jingle 06-19-2018 03:47 PM

We watched the show when it first came out and we are watching it every afternoon. All of the shows are my favorites, although sometimes it sounds like cornpone. Andy tries for a real hickish sound.

mamagrande 06-19-2018 04:47 PM

I tape all of these shows and watch them at night when I am done with chores. Just love the clean, funny episodes especially after listening to the local and national news channels. They help me get to sleep.

I love 'em all! My favorite is when Barney takes a nap in the back room and Andy anchors the blanket under the feet o the cot, sneaks out and then comes back and slams the door to wake him up. Barney struggles with the blanket and appears with his hair on end and the funniest expression on his face... I love it!

Or, when Aunt Bea buys a side of beef and an old rickety chest freezer. When the freezer dies and she and Oppie are pulling the beef in Oppie's wagon followed by all the dogs in town... HeeHeeHee!!

Anniedeb 06-19-2018 10:14 PM

My favorite episode is the Mr. McBeeVee one. Andy doesn't believe Opie, and Opie is so heartbroken. Believing in your child even when it seems far-fetched. Andy was over the moon when he finally met Mr. McBeeVee.

Battle Axe 06-20-2018 01:05 AM

The one where Aunt Bee is feeding a possible suitor and his 3 or 4 sons. They eat like bull dozers and ruffle Aunt Bee.

DebbieJJ 06-20-2018 02:00 AM

It must be the very first episode: the one where Andy's housekeeper is getting married and moving away, and Aunt Bee comes to live with them. She doesn't do anything right, but at the end, when she is getting in the truck to leave, Opie comes running out and says, "I don't want her to leave, what will she do....she can't fish or play baseball...She needs me!"

He was a really good actor. Watch "A Face in the Crowd" (1957), he was a really rotten guy, but a good movie

tranum 06-20-2018 04:23 AM

All the characters played their parts so well. Wouldn’t be great if we could go back to that life ?

toverly 06-20-2018 04:37 AM

I[m with DebbieJJ, my favorite is the very first one. Opie is so little, I just have to watch it.

sewbizgirl 06-20-2018 06:10 AM

I love the Christmas show where the moonshiner and his whole family get put in jail for Christmas because a mean old man demands it. Love his change of heart at the end of the episode.

Andy's overdone Southern drawl is a bit much, tho. Can really get on your nerves if you are a Southerner. Love Barney Parney Poo in all episodes, and Opie was so adorable when he was little.

With all the violence and ugliness on TV these days, Mayberry is a safe place to hide!

Boston1954 06-20-2018 06:16 AM

Remember the Fun Girls? "Hi Doll!" "Shut up Bernie just shut up!". They have had so many wonderful stories.

nativetexan 06-20-2018 06:34 AM

I wanted an Aunt Bea for myself. She always seemed so nice.

Jordan 06-20-2018 07:46 AM

I liked them all. Those were the good ole days when it was fun to sit down and watch TV. I also liked the Walton's-nice family TV show

mandyrose 06-20-2018 10:29 AM

I like all the episodes.......the one i like best is the one where barney and floyed are held hostage in a cabin by 3 female escape prisoners floyed goes to town with one of them meets up with andy, and at the end where they are trying to capture the last female barney wants to dance and he tells her "you are starting to get to me" and showed a close up of him trying to look sexy.

nativetexan 06-20-2018 10:31 AM

when it first started, Andy had a strong accent and acted quite silly. He toned it down later on. actually a bit too much. he had a temper all the time and the school teacher he later married had a temper too. I always wondered why he did that.

ekuw 06-20-2018 10:48 AM

I didn't really watch Andy Griffith growing up, but my husband did. He has recorded most of the episodes and we watch them when there is no better alternative on TV which seems like most of the time. I have become a HUGE fan. It's actually surprising how sophisticated the dialog/humor is considering the time. Really good clean humor too :-)

SusieQOH 06-20-2018 11:20 AM

My Dad hated television and never kept a comment to himself. He said that Andy Griffith was nothing but a hick. Well, yeah, Dad he was! So what? He also hated Ozzie Nelson and said why does he never go to work? My Dad was a quiet man but he sure had no use for TV :D
As far as the shows go- I haven't seen them in so long I don't have an answer but they were just cute shows. When I was growing up nothing had to be censored. One of my favs was My Three Sons and I went on to have 3 sons of my own! But luckily I was in the picture to help them grow up lol. I adored that show.

solstice3 06-20-2018 11:31 AM

I love them all

JanieH 06-20-2018 02:29 PM

I agree Solstice3 - I just love them all!

audsgirl 06-20-2018 10:24 PM

I enjoy the shows, but it has always bothered me that so many of the shows back then featured motherless children. Mothers weren't needed. Andy Griffith, My Three Sons, Bachelor Father, Bonanza, Family Affair, and maybe others.

Leslie

SusieQOH 06-21-2018 03:59 AM

Wow, Leslie, you're right about that! Never put it together like you just did.

sewnclog 06-21-2018 06:39 AM

I liked them all too; I find myself watching a LOT of the 'old' shows (my/our age is showing); Matlock; Perry Mason (was my favorite and he's on 4 times a day here - for now); In The Heat of the Night; All in the Family (SO politically UNcorrect) but such a funny show. I miss the old 'clean' shows that always had a good message; even the Rifleman always had a good moral at the end of the show; seems all of the shows now are just the total opposite. NOT my cup of tea.

SusieQOH 06-21-2018 08:37 AM

I couldn't even tell you what's on TV. We watch MLB ( so we can watch the Yankees) Netflix, and Amazon Prime.
I never have to sit through commercials. I have no use for cable but my husband likes the news so we have it but that's it for cable watching.

That is one of my very favorites. I have too many that are my favorites. The Christmas one where they have Christmas dinner at the courthouse, Barney plays Santa and the mean guy (can't think of his name) commits crimes to get arrested so he can be part of their Christmas.
Another of my favorites: any episodes with the Darlings. Also, where Andy and Barney go into an empty house to get Opie's baseball. Like I said, I have many favorites.

I don't know how I forgot The Rifleman. I watch it 6 days a week on MeTV. Even the stories within the show involved mostly motherless children, usually boys. I still like the show, though. The acting on it was so good. And the show was one of the only ones I can think of where a parent and child told each other they loved one another.

There was also that one Bill Bixby was in with his son. Forgot the name of it. I remember The Rifleman too!
Oh- The Courtship of Eddie's Father
