Annoying -in my face

Can someone PLEASE tell me how to get rid of the message at the top of the page--"3 people have unfriended you" and the invitation to 'click here-free'. I've just put Google chrome browser on this laptp and the pop up blocker is checked...yet a lot of nonsense on the pages that I didn't have before...and I don't know how to manage this one. Should I uninstall and go back to FF? Can you tell this is a rant? http://www.quiltingboard.com/images/icons/icon8.png

Rant or not, won't do any good. If it isn't that one it will be another. This is an advertising spot. I don't think you can do anything about it.

nygal 12-03-2012 02:42 PM

It's an ad. Just have to ignore it I think.

AlienQuilter 12-03-2012 02:46 PM

I agree - very annoying. I guess this is how the forum expenses are met. Be very careful and don't click on anything until the screen is fully loaded otherwise you will wind up in one of those websites - ask me how I know!

Learner747 12-03-2012 02:58 PM

The same ad is on some of the pages I use. And they say "3" friends. I couldn't care less. I figure it will disappear some day.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 12-03-2012 02:59 PM

I had that one for awhile. Now since I've been searching for Christmas gifts I'm getting lots of ads for those things. A few weeks ago my son was searching for engine parts and I had ads for things I didn't even understand! It was kind of funny really. Mostly, I just ignore them. The board has to pay the bills.

Up North 12-03-2012 03:05 PM

I do not get any adds at all it is something with your browser. My son helped me so I do not know what to tell you. I also use Google Chrome

ptquilts 12-03-2012 03:20 PM

I use FF with AdblockerPlus and the only ads I see are the small ones for like Paper Piecing.

Lori S 12-03-2012 03:29 PM

It is the same three "friends" that unfriended me. Guess they are picky ! LOL ...Seriously I learned to tune it out.

I also use ad blocker plus and rarely get ads on my pages. Saves alot of frustration on my part. :)

mermaid 12-03-2012 05:26 PM

Well, thanks a bunch! You've all given me something to look forward to...haha Seriously, I have FF on my other computer and I did something there that wiped almost all of them away. Remember the overflowing toilet? Killed that in a NY minute. But this Google chrome---I can't figure it out. I'm going to FF tomorrow.

patricej 12-04-2012 02:29 AM

bit of a conflict of interest for me, here, since the ads doooooo pay our rent and keep the site free to all of us. i'd rather put up with them than have to pay a membership fee. (and ... yes ... i'd have to pay, too. i'm a member and a volunteer.)
nearly all sites like ours push ads.
i put it in the same "column" as 1-800-BadDrug ads on TV.
a necessary pain in the sit-on-it.

AdBlock plus offers a free version for Google Chrome.
i have yet to find a free one for MS Explorer.

Chasing Hawk 12-04-2012 02:52 AM

Adblock plus is offered for Firefox users too.

mermaid 12-04-2012 04:40 AM

Patrice, I understand about the ads paying for us to be here--it's just that particular one that really gets under my skin, and I don't even know what it is. But I change pages and there it is in my face again! I'm sure you've sometimes felt the urge to go ballistic--that's how I was feeling yesterday. Hormones, maybe? A while back there was one at the top of the page saying someone was needing me to contact them. Curious, after several days, I 'put my nose in' and it was "ahem " escort ladies & they were located in a small town near me. Eye opener!

alwayslearning 12-04-2012 05:26 AM

I think it is a very funny ad because no one can "unfriend" me since I am not a member of any site that allows people to like me or not. In the first place that is not a verb. In the second place it, the ad, allows us to enjoy this board for free. I have recently learned to navigate the pages even more carefully because of the ads on the side that if you happens to move over, the ad pops up and takes over the page. Even though it has a "close" box, it doesn't work. It is irritating, but I figure that is part of the dues we do not pay in cash for this great site.

Material Witness 12-04-2012 05:49 AM

What a coincidence! I also have 3 friends that have unfriended me. <sob>

ptquilts 12-04-2012 06:00 AM

I can understand the need for ads, however, do they have to be so annoying and disgusting? Overflowing toilet?? yuk. I have not seen any Flash (animated ads) for a while due to AdBlocker, however I remember VIVIDLY the jiggling bellies and yellow teeth. They are what drove me to block them all.

sewnsewer2 12-04-2012 06:28 AM

I had a lot of problems with google chrome too so I deleted it!

FYI if you want to get rid of something click on it and then hit alt & F4.

Me too !! Guess us quilting ladies have no friends or are very choosy about our friends !! LOL OH well Life does go on and on with or without those ungrateful friends who unfriended us .. LOL (sorry Ladies & Gentlemen; my sense of humor took over the keys !!LOL)

Nanamoms 12-04-2012 06:46 AM

Oh no, 3 friends wanted to "unfriend me", too! LOL The annoying blinking ads are the worst. I don't mind at all the ads I get when I have done a search or shopped on sites and I do like the ones that pop up with quilting/sewing sites!

MaggieLou 12-04-2012 07:10 AM

I have an ad blocker but this has appeared a couple of times. Some of them have a place you can check to close the ad but they're not always easy to see.

carolynjo 12-04-2012 07:18 AM

My gripe is with Family Dollar ads highjacking the entire page on QB. I can remove it; my 'puter blocks my removing it. A new computer is arriving Wed. night, so hopefully, that will take care of the problem.

Rose Marie 12-04-2012 07:24 AM

It is scary to realize that ads are targeting you. They track your buying online and post ads just for your buying habits.

Peckish 12-04-2012 08:20 AM

I agree with the Firefox/AdBlockerPlus posters. This is what I use and I never see ads. Drives me batty when I use DH's iPad with Safari, which apparently has no such ad blocking plugin. Ads up the wazoo! I hate that one that follows you down the right side of the page. DH told me he's installed a Chrome app, so I'm hoping that will block the ads.

I feel for you, Patrice, I understand that's how this site pays for itself. But I really have a huge problem with the amount of advertising we are bombarded with all day, every day, from everything around us (not just this site).

nativetexan 12-04-2012 08:22 AM

I see it also. I just ignore it. it's better than the photos of ladies looking sexy!!!!

Barbshobbies 12-04-2012 08:32 AM

I have the ads, but never read them, I still would take them off if I could.

sandy l 12-04-2012 08:45 AM

With me, it's sort of become a "seeing them without really seeing them" kind of thing. But still annoying.

willferg 12-04-2012 08:50 AM

I found a free program called Ghostery that blocks sites from leaving tracking devices on my computer, and I am amazed at how much it's cut down on ads. I don't mind the quilting related ads, but some of the other stuff is annoying, especially when it pops up wherever I go.

Ghostery tells me how many sites it's blocking on every page I go. My son's been to sites where over 20 other sites were trying to track him! No wonder weird ads used to show up!

Remember, any time you are offered something "FREE" on the internet ------ YOU are the product.

LoisM 12-04-2012 08:52 AM

Yep...the same three friends unfriended me too (and I'm on FF). The ad disappeared in a couple of days. Let it pass.

catmcclure 12-04-2012 09:18 AM

It has something to do with Facebook. That got so annoying that I no longer use Facebook.

margee 12-04-2012 03:06 PM

Gee, I thought it was only me who was unfriended by these 3. Haven't clicked on it--am afraid of what might pop up.

Sheila_H 12-04-2012 03:34 PM

I use Google Chrome as well and all I see is the Craftsy banner at the top (that's because I was talking to someone else about Craftsy lessons earlier today I'm guessing), I just ignore the top banner I don't think you can get rid of them.

NanaCsews2 12-04-2012 04:58 PM

I didn't read the replies and sorry if this is duplicated. Google Chrome has had issues. For some reason my son who is taking extensive computer classes told me to never download it. Firefox and IE are ideal browsers with far fewer issues.
In any case, try downloading Adblock plus. But go to your browsers website and download it from there. It blocks ads very well. I never see any ads anywhere anymore now that I use Firefox and the adblock plus. And never on this site. Just a suggestion.

BellaBoo 12-04-2012 04:58 PM

Most of the ads use adobe flash so you can disable that. That's what adblocker does. I never notice the ads or any of the sidebars. I read the post topics and the rest is just sight noise to me.

KwiltyKahy 12-04-2012 05:48 PM

I don't care about the 3 "friends" but the Family Dollar that keeps taking over my screen is about to drive me nuts.

Tropical 12-04-2012 05:57 PM

I keep getting that ad, too. I ignore it. I figure it has something to do with facebook. Since I'm not a member of that or any other program of that type, I knew it didn't mean me. It is annoying anyway. :):):)

jitkaau 12-05-2012 04:13 AM

You can adjust the level of protection in Chrome. You can also get rid of any unwanted extensions. Go to the stack of three bars at the top right of your screen, just under the red cross. Click on the bars and you will be able to select the adjustments to suit yourself. The settings and tools sections are the most useful.

mountain deb 12-05-2012 06:38 AM

Thanks for posting, I can now officially ignore that.

JoanneS 12-05-2012 08:33 AM

Ignore - and remember that the pop-ups are why we have this wonderful, FREE site!
