we need to show more of our work! i really love seeing what others are working on, and if i ever figure it out there are a few things i'd like to show off! speaking of showing off, precious olivia has started crawling, pulling up to stand, and has 2 new teeth just poking out. all this in one week!! she will be 8 months old on the 3rd! it is such fun to see her feed herself, drink from a sippy cup and generally just blooming. she has also figured out the bronx cheer! that's my girl!!:)

irishrose 04-01-2012 10:23 PM

Welcome, allikat and Sassey.Welcome back , returnees. I'm not sure about signing up. I'm not a very good example if I lose 10 pounds in a month - the same 2, 3 or 5 pounds over and over. My weight is exactly the same as it was a month ago, though it was up 5 pounds a few weeks ago. Cindy (createfourpaws), I assume you are in.

April 1st already. I guess time flys when you're having fun. Eat clean, move your body, drink lots of water and the weight will disappear - at least until you get to the last ten pounds. Am I whining? Today was my 'feast' day. I had an unexpected guest. I thought my son was out of the country, but he showed up so I spent the weekend cooking. He gets so thin when he's eating on the road and it's a mother's job to fatten him up.

Have a good evening, y'all.

nancia 04-02-2012 02:38 AM

gee, irish, it looks to me like you're trying to get your son into this group! (JK, lol) how nice you got to see him! i miss my kids a lot! my ds in nyc has been pretty busy and hasn't visited for awhile. i do see olivia pretty often. she is such a happy sprite! she crawls, pulls up to standing, and has 2 teeth! i want to go see her in person!

OMG did anyone on here watch 60 Minutes last night. It was about how bad sugar is for you. It almost makes me want to quit eating any sugar. They did brain scans of patients and your brain reacts to sugar similar to how it reacts to cocaine. Sugar is more addicting than cocaine. I guess we all kinda know that. Your body builds up an immunity to it and constantly craves more for the same effect. It also is being linked to cancer and heart disease. It feeds the cancer cells. There is sugar hidden in everything. Very interesting show.
Irish you can't leave us. I too keep messing with the same few pounds. I feel like this site keeps me accountable and somewhat under control.
Everyone try to cut down on sugar. Eat healthy

nancia 04-02-2012 04:39 AM

my name is nancia, and i am a sugar addict. my husband was gone for 4 days and i went through 2 boxes of thin mint gs cookies, a box of trefoils and a box of lemon something and half a box of oreos. on the plus side, i ate a pear and 2 apples, i'm noticing a trend ! sugar is most definitely related to pancreatic cancer, most sufferers are diabetic first. reason enough to cut out sugar!

Jim's Gem 04-02-2012 09:29 AM

My nutritionist has "us" off of all sugar. Real and fake. It has not been all that hard. For the most part I have been very good. Though yesterday I had lunch with my daughters and their DH's and grand baby. I ate half a muffin, Beth did use half oil and half applesauce and used half whole wheat flour so it was a little better than normal. I had to try a taste. I also had half a piece of bacon, first I have had in months.
On Saturday we went to a wedding, the couple were from Norway and I just had to have some of the Marzipan type cake that is a traditional celebration cake, it was so good!! I did skip the wedding cake.
I only lost 6 lbs last month. But I will take anything I can get. I have a long long way to go and as long as I don't go up I am happy!!!!

mim 04-02-2012 09:33 AM

I'm signing up again because I do need the encouragement. You are so helpful as we all struggle against gravity (????).
Mim

Greetings ladies!!! April is here. Can't believe it - the weather here in ND is like June. DH mowed the lawn yesterday getting ready to have it thatched. Guess what - it is raining now. If that is all it took - he could have mowed it weeks ago.

Worked at antique store this morning. Took my apple and cauliflower to munch on because I don't get home until after 1. But when I got home I really wanted to munch. Did have somewhat of a treat Sat night by eating at KFC, but I ate really carefully. Had the first diet coke since Feb 1. Wow - I could have drank more but I stayed with one glass and then drank a lot of water when I got home.

So I have 2 weeks until daughter's graduation. Tried on a top and jacket to wear - if I continue to loose a few more lbs, I have a classy outfit to wear. If not, I will have to go shopping. Sorry ladies, shopping is not my thing.

Irish, please stay with us. We all need your encouragements. Newbies, we are all in this together - one meal at a time. We don't have to give up, we need to learn to moderate.

Have a great evening.

I just posted a tutorial for my convergence quilt from retreat. I hope it makes sense.
Pat

jlwheart 04-02-2012 03:16 PM

Hi all, I'm in for April. Got back last nite from a retreat in Buffalo MN. Spring was bursting out everywhere once I got to the cities. It's about a month ahead of schedule, but very much appreciated. I got back last nite and just after I finished unloading the car, the sky unloaded and we had a massive thunder storm. Lake Superior was beautiful! I'm encouraged after eating carefully this weekend and hope to have a big wt loss month. Last month I lost a total of 5.5# so down to 247.5# now. My goal again this month is to move more and get to the therapy pool to do my PT workout.
Also, I want to get my sampler quilt finished. It's been an UFO for 2 years and I'm tired of looking at it!! Also, I've got some flannel I want to turn into a quilt for my bed. So these are my quilting projects for the next several months. I will share that at the retreat, folks donate items to raise $$ for our retreat's scholarship fund. I crocheted an afghan & donated it to the fund. We played bingo for the prizes and I won my afghan! LOL

Jim's Gem 04-02-2012 03:32 PM

I got a cast on my foot today. I am hoping that I can still walk around a little with a lot less pain. It is removable, I am so thankful that we don't have to wear those plaster things hardly ever any more. Not a whole lot of exercise is in the near future for me. If I get a wheel chair, then maybe my arms will get a bit of a workout. Fortunately this is my left foot so I can still drive and still operate a sewing machine!!!!!
I was only down 6 lbs for March. Less than I had hoped but happy that it is at least that much. Hope I can do the same for April! It will be hard, once I have foot surgery I am blessed with lots of friends that want to bring over meals, problem is that I can't as carefully control what I eat. I will tell everyone that it needs to be low fat and low cal and lots of veggies!!! Most of them know that but don't usually cook that way for themselves.

Pam 304 04-02-2012 07:32 PM

I am in again this month.. did lose a few oz's. LOL

Pam 304 04-02-2012 08:01 PM

Okay, I'm in one more month. If I weigh 146 again on the 30th, then I'll rethink it. April and Easter are times of new beginnings so it's a great time to jumpstart a weight lose. With spring arriving, our caveman genes will let us lose a few pounds as we survied a winter, so April will be a great month for all of us.

My name is Judy and I am a sugar addict. My name is Judy and I am a compulsive overeater. The second one is easier to deal with than the first for me. I wish I had seen that program Sunday. Two of my children were sugar reactive when younger - one still is, so it would have been interesting to me. D bought a white rat for a science project and feed him healthy food for two weeks then gave him a smidgeon of brown sugar. Poor Gilligan went berserk - even ran upside down across the top of the cage. S had her stethoscope home from work to check his heartbeat, but they couldn't count it - it just a blur. D's conclusion as a 5th grader - "I am not the only mammal who reacts to sugar." I hated it when the gov't decided sugar didn't affect children. None of them ever worked in a classroom, I'm sure, especially after Halloween. The sugar lobbyists at work again. I'm curious about the effect of sugar on me. I am thinking the attacks of sleepiness are related so the first thing I can do for for this month is track that.

Gilligan was a hit at the science fair, but being an idiot I had never considered what we'd do with him after it was over. I had a dog who was half Basenji and a bit of a fighter, a Siamese cat and a rat in the same house. The rat lived three years.

I put the red quilt aside and pulled out the wedding quilt that didn't get finished in time for the wedding last summer because I wanted it larger. The couple will be in the state the week of the 15th, so I am going to make those extra blocks and finish it.

Purplemen, where are you? We need you. I wonder who our winner is this month. Oh, I need to chose a bright and get in it the mail. I have plenty, but which one can I part with? Decisions, decisions.

Woman's World magazine's diet for this week is five days of 'normal' eating and two days of low carb. What is normal???

Pam 304, what's our taboo for this week?. Newbies, we have a weekly taboo that starts on Tuesday. It really isn't always something we should never have (sometimes it is), but has been a way of raising awareness of how much I consume of certain things. Last week was Easter candy and I have been successful, so I'll take my gold star, thank you very much. Thank you for doing this, Pam. BTW, if you have any ideas, you can PM her.

I want to get back to the quilt, so;

I AM losing weight and getting healthier. Goodnight, all.

edit: Pam and I were typing at the same time.

alikat110 04-03-2012 02:34 AM

if anyone is interested, chromium picolate (sp?) is supposed to help with your cravings for sweets. as a sweets addict, especially chocolate, i am giving this a try this month. gonna find a place for water aerobics as it is too hard for me to get exercise d/t fibromyalgia. the aching is sometimes unbearable, and my Dr. and friend, who is a pain management specialist, tells me that light aerobic exercise is one of the best treatments for it. medication is out of the question for me and water aerobics is easiest on the joints.......

nancia 04-03-2012 03:30 AM

alikat110-- the positive is our drs recognize fybromyalgia (so many think it's in our heads), the negative is they do not understand how difficult it can be to get out of bed, much less exercise. during a flare up it hurts to even breathe. my husband has agreed to do the pool for one more year (at least) since it is the only place i have no pressure/ pain on any part of me. blessed relief ! i have eaten all the easter candy i'm going to for this year, so hoping april is a good month to lose! good luck everyone!!

meanmom 04-03-2012 03:48 AM

Irish, I would be thrilled to weigh 146. The last few pounds are always the hardest to lose. Are you sure below 146 isn't too low for your body? As we get older out weight set point goes up a little.
I too am a sugar addict. I do find that the more I eat the more I need. Especially chocolate. I cut back slowly and it seems to be easier. I try to allow myself 2 or 3 chocolates a week. That is usually enough. Once I start increasing that it get totally out of control. (like now)
We are taking my uncle out for dinner tomorrow for his 85th birthday. We are going to a really nice restaurant that I have been wanting to go to for years. Then back to my sisters for birthday pie. (we aren't cake eaters here) I sure hope I can control myself.

Pam 304 04-03-2012 05:32 AM

yes please pm me with any idea's for the taboo's Thanks Judy!

jlwheart 04-03-2012 08:25 AM

Hi all, I too am an addict to sugar and carbs. Eating high carbs w/sugar & fat and man, I'd be off and running into food. Couldn't get enough. Now that I eat low carb food plan the compulsion is lifted - for today. I work a program to help me with staying off sugar and excess food. It's working! Now I need to move more and it's hard when I hurt. Didn't get to the pool today but I'm planning on going Wed. I like the info on eggs. Looking forward to trying some of them. Good luck everyone on eating healthy today!

irishrose 04-03-2012 08:32 AM

meanmom, when I was on the workplace wellness committee for the entire school system, we arranged for health exams for the staff. When the nurse wrote down I was obese at 5' 8" and 170 pounds, I choked. I knew I was overweight, but the next word bothered me. She explained she had measured more of my bones than usual and because I was definitely small boned, I was obese. I have lost 2 1/2" in height to osteoporosis, so, no, 146 isn't too small a weight. When my ribbon on the fridge fits, then I will be at the right weight. I'm thinking 138. That was a perfect weight when I was taller and I'll give myself a little leeway for old age. If I lose more, I may get wrinkly. The ribbon is half my height (32 1/2") - a far cry from the 21" waist I had as a teenager and a young mother. When my weight crept up to 201, it was a wake up. I got down to 165 okay, but it's been tough going since then. The funny part is I had to fight to keep my weight up to 120 most of my life, but nothing in life is constant except change, so what is, is.

alikat, chomium picolate helps stabilize blood sugar, too. That one is a win-win.

Nanci, I envy you your pool as long as you have someone to do the maintenence. It can be a lot of work. I can't go in one unless it is cleaned by oxygen. I'm allergic to both choline and bromine which was hard to take because I was addicted to aqua aerobics in the late 80s. Now I'd have to wear pantyhose with my bathing suit, LOL.

Jean, do you have a class or do you do your own aqua aerobics? I still miss it. I agree low carb is the way to go for anyone with sugar problems. Having celiac disease helps. I won't spend the money for gluten free baked products and I can choose when to make my own. My trouble comes with choosing how much to eat when I do make something. I can portion and freeze anything except blonde brownies.

Fibromyalgia is a sneaky, insidious disease. I was diagnosed in 1983. Lupus in 1977, RA in 1964, etc, etc. I have managed by taking supplements, not meds, though last year I did add Lyrica when I developed nerve damage in my back and left foot. It has helped a little with the fibro to the point where I may try to increase the dose, though the small amount I'm on made me dizzy for a long time. I still haven't ridden my bike for that reason. A stationary bike is good exercise if you can stand the lack of scenery change - I can't, so I gave away my Schwinn Airdyne that I used for part of my PT after my foot surgeries.

MJ (Purplemen) says to not have a plan is to plan to fail. My plan for today is because it's Tuesday and my oldest daughter and I go to dinner, I will have a light brunch, a healthy dinner (well, the one I'm thinking of has cheese on top so that's debatable) and a hot chocolate for night snack. Some fruit in there somewhere.

My other plan is to clean up some of my quilting mess because my tutoree has switched to Tuesday, so I'll catch you later. I have to hide the red quilt because it's for that daughter (I have four).

I AM losing weight and getting healthier.

WOW I can't believe it is already the 4th of the month. I hope to be around more this month, work is slowing down so not much overtime will be available until it all picks up again.

I will be announing the March winner very soon. I only got a few emails, so I will go on what I have received so far.

If you are new first time joining us in our adventure, please send me a PM for the address to mail your FQ to me.

Good luck everyone and welcome new comers and our returning ladies.

Pam H 04-03-2012 10:13 PM

I am also a sugar addict. I highly doubt I would have a weight problem if it weren't for sugar.
Welcome to our new people!
Judy, I'm glad you decided to stay!
My husband got an email on sunday while we were out for lunch. The husband of my very dear friend in WI passed away. We went home, packed, cleaned and loaded the car. We were on the road within 4 hours of hearing the news. It was the quickest trip we have made between Texas and WI. We did spend the night in OK City. I spent most of today with my friend. She is having a very rough time. Tomorrow I will help her clean and get her house ready for guests.
My allergies are already bothering me. Guess I shouldn't have spent time this afternoon blowing leaves off my garden.

joejoe31 04-04-2012 03:58 AM

darn i missed it by a day ....sigh

irishrose 04-04-2012 07:00 PM

joejoe31, I'll pm createfourpaws, but I think you can join if you are willing to start your weight from today - Wednesday. You only missed it by less than 12 hours.

Hi, Cindy. I'm glad you are able to handle those hours, but we miss you.

Glad you're back, buslady.

Pam, my condolences to you and your friend. You are a wonderful friend to do this for her. A sister from another mother, maybe??

Went out and about today. I was overcharged at JoAnn's and it's a hundred mile round trip. I always check my receipt in the car, but I had a terrible back spasm just then and when it was over, I drove away. JoAnn's is always sticker shock so I didn't question it inside. I'll be on the phone in the morning. I do have to go back to Traverse City on th 25th so I'll get it corrrected then.

I had a nice meal at Trevino's on the Bear golf course, so now the trick is remembering I've eaten between now and bedtime. Sometimes if I don't cook the food, I don't feel like I've had any. Remember, I have no appestat so I never feel full.

I want to get back on more normal hours now that nice weather is here. Right now, I'm tired enough that I could go to bed at a decent time instead of 3:30 am.

Has anyone tried the Sharon Schamber method of sandwiching a quilt? I'm having a temper tantrum and want to find a different way of doing it. It would be nice to be able to do one at home. I did one on the floor, but I don't think that's a viable possibility any more. Getting long boards home from Home Depot will be a trip but I've done it before. One more block to assemble on the expansion of the Jewel Box, then it's crunch time. Between this and the red one, I need a vacation fron HSTs.

I am losing weight and getting healthier.
Judy

jlwheart 04-04-2012 09:34 PM

Please let us know how the S. Schamber method works. I'm intrigued and wondering how I'll get the boards home too!
Irishrose - I had PT design a therapy pool workout for me. When I get stronger I'll do the SilverSneakers water aerobics classes but not there yet. Dr is checking for problem with thyroid. I've got some signs there might be a problem.
I went to a retreat last weekend and donated a crocheted afghan I'd made for our scholarship fund for next years retreat. Then we played bingo for the donated items and I won my afghan! I think I was the most surprised of all attending. I'm still chuckling over it!
Food went really well and I'm following my plan. This week I'm focusing on using more carrots - I think Easter creates a carrot craving. Go figure - everyone talks about chocolate but I think carrots. I don't eat chocolate anymore. Easier to abstain than to limit amounts.

irishrose 04-04-2012 10:12 PM

I brought home pressure treated boards to make a handicapped dog a ramp with them sticking out the passenger side window. I was very concerned about the mailboxes on the route I chose. I think 7 feet will be enough for the big lap quilts I make, so I will have boards cut at Home Depot, then place them diagonally across the car with one end out the window. I wonder how long the ones for the ramp were? I still have them, but that wood is too heavy to work with for me. I know they were more than 8 feet so I should be okay this time. Of course, I had access to a huge diesel truck all weekend and never thought about going to HD. I found an alternate site for pinning a quilt today, but I rather like the idea of not having to take it anywhere.

I bought some weird batting today. Recycled cotton and recycled polyester (70/30) by Pellon. I'm very curious about it. Website says 1/4" and the package says 1/8" thick. I don't want 1/8" so I guess I need to carefully open it.

nancia 04-05-2012 12:10 AM

if i google sharon shamburg will i find her method for sandwiching, etc.? i use spray basting. VERY easy, holds and is repositional(some). i do small quilts on a table with vinyl tablecloth. larger quilts i do in sections. so far no problems, can't use it with poly-fil batting. i tried the iron-on batting and it melted in some places and became crinkly, and didn't hold in other places and was puffy. of course, i was very young at the time:o and new to quilting. it was in november. yes, 2011.
