Baseball!!!!!

What day is today, you ask? Why, it's opening day of baseball, Covid-19 style. I'm so glad that they have been able to figure out a way to keep the game going and also keep it safe for everyone involved. Are you a baseball fan too? Who are you going to watch today? I grew up in LA, but have lived in Northern California for many years. LA vs Giants...who to root for tonight? What a quandary! Anyway, have fun watching the game.

........and our poor Jays are homeless! :(

Right now, I have mixed feelings about the season.
Not just for baseball, but for all the other sports leagues and their new schedules.
Maybe I will come to like it?

I can't help but wonder "why?" are they going ahead?
And why not call it quits, before these new seasons begin?

Just way too much at risk here for everyone involved .... JIMHO.

I've had withdrawal not being able to watch my Yankees! I have MLB so I can watch all the games. Let's play ball! :)

Jingle 07-23-2020 03:43 PM

St. Louis Cardinals played Kansas City last night. I didn't watch. My Husband is not a big sport fan.

P-BurgKay 07-24-2020 05:36 AM

Not sure about the major leagues, but I would love to be able to watch my grandson play. He plays for Free State in Lawrence, KS. But with Covid and both my hubby and I are high risk, we just can not go across the state to watch him. On a big pitty pot

Lucky you! I have MLB.TV too, but they won't let me watch the Giants, or the Dodgers. Last year they wouldn't let me watch anything west of the Mississippi...go figger. Like I'm really going to make the 3-4 day drive to Denver to attend the game. Anyway, I was able to listen to it which is almost as good. I'm going to watch the reruns today.

I should adopt an East Coast team, so I can root and watch too.

tropit- that's strange- I get all the games. I wonder why you don't?
Well, I watched the Yankees play the Nats last night until a torrential downpour did them in. So then I watched the Dodgers and the Giants. I will watch anyone play to be honest with you. I love the game. But I sure miss Jeter and Rivera. I always will :)

On second thought though, I don't get them on MLB if they are playing on say ESPN or Fox. Is that what you mean?

ckcowl 07-24-2020 01:18 PM

Woohoo! About to watch the Tigers and Cincinnati. Going to grill Bratts and eat - BallPark Style for the game. 🤗

Panchita 07-24-2020 01:20 PM

I'm a 2nd generation Giants fan. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png Not really sure about how I feel about the 'revised' season - on the one hand, ! On the other, concern for those involved in bringing us the baseball action. I suppose I just have to trust that they'll do their best to be safe.

I did like the comment about the cut-out audience, where apparently if the ball hits your cut-out some teams will send the owner the baseball as if they caught it in the park. I love that idea! https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

That's it. You get ESPN. I don't have cable, so they won't let me watch it on ESPN and MLB is just difficult about, "out of market," games.

Mariano Rivera...the best relief pitcher of all time. He only had one pitch, but it was a good one.

I know...you'll be upset with me, but the DH and I have decided to adopt the Red Sox as our East Coast team. :) We went to Fenway Park last year for the first time. It was just magical...loved it. The fans, the hawkers, everyone there was fantastic. They even rooted for the Giants players! The park was so nostalgic too.

Giants are my first choice team too, although I grew up with the Dodgers. I still like the Dodgers though. I'm not into the rivalry at all.

I thought through the facts about the revised season and I decided that I'm OK with it. They're taking a lot of precautions and testing frequently. I have noticed that the players are not always following the face mask rules in the dugout though. I think that they really should, if for no other reason than to make for a good example to all of the kids and grown-ups watching. They're big heroes in many peoples' eyes.

Love the cut-out gets the ball idea!

tropit- believe it or not I'm not upset with you! haha
I don't love the Sox but I don't dislike them. There are certain players of many teams that I follow. I love the American League in general with the exception of the Astros. I'm so mad about that whole fiasco!
I like some of the National league as well.
I also have to root for the Nats because my sweet baby granddaughter lives there :)
But tonight the Yankees are playing the Nats and since I'm home.........

I am from New York and we always loved the Yankees.

Mariano was one of a kind, no? He's the only player in history to make the Hall of Fame with 100% the first time. Jeter made it with 98%. One stinker held back lol.

Panchita 07-25-2020 12:14 PM

Tropit - I'm not into the rivalry with the Dodgers either. Or for that matter the supposed one with the A's. Just play ball!

I agree all the players/staff should be abiding by all the rules, inc in the dugout - the mask pulled down below the chin whilst still around the ears particularly bugs me for some reason - what, you're protecting your Adam's apple?!

My favourite temporary rule (that I hope will be permanent, though I have my doubts) is the 3-batters per pitcher one - but I'm still scarred from Bochy's bullpen-roulette antics in 2016, so may be biased https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

Stitchnripper 07-25-2020 12:17 PM

My son lives in PNW and a Mariner fan. Since he can't go to the games this year, he bought a cut out of himself to sit in the stands. If it gets hit by a ball, he gets the ball.

tropit 07-25-2020 02:32 PM

I'm also a fan of both the As and the Angels. Yeah...Astros...I dunno. I'll get over it. Baseball isn't perfect. We just like to believe it is.

Panchita, are you still in North Wales? (I love that area, BTW.) I had a good friend from England that just couldn't understand why a bunch of full grown men wanted to go out on a lovely lawn, wearing their pajamas, to play a little boys game. I told her, "That's the whole point! Geesh!" :D

We go to Cleveland whenever they play the Yankees. Well one year a former Yankee, Nick Swisher, was playing for Cleveland and hit an amazing home run. So I got up and yelled " Yeah, Swish!".
Some grumpy fan looked at me and said " You're a Yankees fan, why are you cheering for Swisher"? (I had a Yankee tee on).
Another guy said " Oh stop, she's obviously a baseball fan"!! And he gave me a big thumbs up. It was hilarious https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

Then another time I was screaming for Arod to look my way before the game and of course he didn't. I told my sons and you can imagine what they thought! Ha!!!

WMUTeach 07-26-2020 02:49 AM

Missed the first Tiger game, but caught the second game last evening. It made the evening seem like summer. Nice to hear the names, play by play, and the "roar" of the virtual crowd. Ahhh, traditions do bring us comfort and ease.

Panchita 07-26-2020 05:46 AM

Tropit - I am in North Wales - we moved here about 2 years ago from England (in reality, we moved about 10 miles, lol, just across the border from one country to the next). We love it here.

My usual response to the 'grown men in pjs on the lawn playing games' is "Uh-huh. Like cricket." https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...es/biggrin.png

WMUTeach - You're right, it is comforting to have them back

SusieQOH...you're too funny! Swisher was an A at one time, I do believe. My DIL loves, loves, loves Hunter Pence and just about fell out of the stands trying to get his attention.

"I looooooovvvvveee you Hunter!!!!!!"

Frankly, I was a little embarrassed for her. :) We're all thrilled that he's back with the Giants now, high pants and all.

Giants won, Red Sox lost. Today's another day. Baseball has really cheered me up.

I know...I reminded her of cricket. Now, there's an outfit. :D

OT: I bought some beautiful woolen blankets and pillows at an old mill up in your area. What was the name of it? Gosh...it was in Welsh. I don't think I could spell it if I tried, much less pronounce it. I'll look up their website and get back to you on that. Oh, I found it right away: https://www.t-w-m.co.uk/ Everything is super, high quality and so beautiful!

Panchita 07-26-2020 12:49 PM

Tropit - I'm not familiar with that mill, but it isn't too far from us - we're a bit closer to the border though. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/smile.png

SusieQOH 07-26-2020 02:10 PM

tropit- I know what you mean. Having the games makes life feel normal :)
Weird w/o fans but I'll take what I can get.
And yeah, about the Astros. Not the only scandal in baseball, unfortunately but it is what it is.

ube quilting 07-27-2020 02:26 PM

Well, that was short-lived. It took less than a week for 14 members of the Marlins tested positive for Covid. Will we never learn.

SusieQOH 07-27-2020 03:20 PM

Omg, really? I hadn't heard.

Panchita 07-28-2020 06:19 AM

14?! Wow. I hadn't heard either. I mean, I suppose once its in the camp (of whoever) then it'll spread really quickly in the same way anything else would, but wow. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/eek.png

tropit 07-28-2020 10:19 AM

Yeah...that's a lot of infected players, plus the manager. It got me thinking of the mindset of those players, young, at the top of their game, ready to play, feeling invincible...and possibly not following the Covid rules. While watching the games yesterday, I noticed that a lot more players were wearing their face masks. I hope that they stick with the program. We all want to watch baseball, but not at such a high cost.

SusieQOH 07-29-2020 04:26 AM

tropit- we'll be against each other on Friday (NYY and BOSOX) haha!

Of course, that's a big if at this point.

OK! Game On!

I have to say, I'm not too impressed with my newly adopted, "East Coast Team." They haven't done so great lately. (About as well as my Giants...LOL.) I'll still root for them...Go Sox! :D
