My dads, ham hocks, red potatoes and green beans, all cooked together in a pot on the stove. Me and my 3 sisters have tried to make this since he passed away but it never taste the same.

my grandma's homemade chicken and noodles, bread, pies,

she was a marvelous cook, I sure miss her!

I can only narrow it down to my favorite dinner: steak, baked potato with everything, salad with chunky blue cheese dressing, coke with lots of ice and brownies for dessert.

Also, we went crabbing once in Oregon and cooked them straight from the bucket. They were awesome!

Its way toooo hard for me to narrow down... I'm a HUGE foodie!!! I am wracking my brain here trying to come up with an idea but having trouble! I LOVE FOOD!!! LOL

Try Velveeta, and a little salt and pepper. My mom made mac and cheese that way. She also cooked with a handful of this, a pinch of that, and a dash or two of something else. Nothing written down, reading recipes was just too much trouble when she had them in her head.

Have already posted but this hit me this morning. Fresh made chocolate truffles from a little place in Brussels, Belguim. Best chocolate I ever ate bar none.

You're right - it probably was Velveeta! Now, if I could get the amounts of each ingredient right! And the baking temp and the time - - -

Do the same thing she did in the beginning----experiement. And always trust your sense of smell. That's how I make meat loaf--when the mixture smells right I know it's ready to bake. Smell can be as important as sight and or thought processing when it comes to cooking.

I was just thinking that if we started a thread of "The worst thing you ever ate" we'd probably have the same things on it just we'd just switch names on the entries.

So many have remarked about missing Mom's cooking and how we(me too) can't duplicate it. Do you think that maybe it's because our mom's used lard, butter, meat grease, homegrown veggies, real sugar, eggs from the henhouse out back, nothing from a mix, etc.? They used things that we don't have access to or have learned to do without because we've been told they aren't good for us. JMHO

I think that things tasted a lot better because there weren't all the additives, antibiotics, flavor enhancers and other processed ingredients in the foods our parents made. I miss my parent's cooking too.

Yes and no. My mother never used lard and rarely butter, we didn't have homegrown veggies or a henhouse (we were city folk) and I don't recall her baking from scratch. But no question, things with additives taste different, especially baked good. Store-made cookies, cakes, breads, etc aren't even worth buying most of the time. They just taste wrong.

And in my mother's case, she was a talented cook, who could improvise and always have it turn out wonderful. I can't do that to save my life.

Maybe part of it is that many of our mothers didn't work at outside jobs and could spend more time on cooking.

Also, I suspect their pots and pans were "seasoned" so the flavorings in them added to whatever was being cooked. Nowadays, most of us scrape our pots clean.
