I guess I have had my Grammie on my mind lately, and with all the quilting magazines I have...got me remembering how I used to love playing with the Betsy McCall paper dolls that Grammie used to save me in her McCall's magazines. Now, here I am grown up and buying McCall's Quilting magazines.
Do any of you out there remember the paper dolls, and having fun spending lots of hours playing with them also?
Happy Quilting!!
Nancy

Yes a friend of my mom's saved them for me to play with.

mommamac 01-31-2011 05:22 PM

My mom use to buy the magazine every August - that is when I had my yearly permanent for the school year. Betsy kept me entertained as my mom rolled those stinky rods!

KathyAire 01-31-2011 05:25 PM

Paper dolls was one of my favorite things to play with.

AnitaSt 01-31-2011 05:26 PM

Oh, I loved Betsy McCall. My mom subscribed in the '50's and my sisters and I always got the doll out right away.

What a cool site! If only I had known these were here when my granddaughters were younger.

mamaw 01-31-2011 05:38 PM

Oh my goodness, I used to get the perms too lol. Did you ever get the rag curls?? My mom would bring me to my aunt's and they would do them together. I remember being miserable having to sit there so long. Oh what memories!!

nativetexan 01-31-2011 05:40 PM

I remember paper dolls. didn't play with them much though.

Cyn 01-31-2011 05:56 PM

I played with paper dolls all the time!

grandma sue 01-31-2011 06:10 PM

Yes, I remember playing with betsy McCall paper dolls. Couldn't wait for my mother to get the magazine each month.

hikingquilter 01-31-2011 06:31 PM

Oh yes, my mom always gave me the page to cut out. I looked for it every time she got McCall's mag in the mail. I loved paper dolls. Designed my own dolls and clothes too.

Thanks for the link. Really brings back memories.

patchsamkim 01-31-2011 06:46 PM

Thanks for the memories...if I ever have grand-daughters I will have to make copies for them to play with!

ptquilts 01-31-2011 06:54 PM

I remember Betsy, and I also had the Lennon Sisters paper dolls!

cherylynne 01-31-2011 07:03 PM

I do remember that page of paperdolls. They were really cute.

trisha 01-31-2011 07:08 PM

I had shoe boxes full of paper dolls. Oh...those were the days!!!

SandyinZ4 01-31-2011 07:15 PM

I too, had a huge box of paper dolls. I could play with them for hours although I really enjoyed just sitting on my bed and cutting out all the clothes. Once my younger sis got mad at me and took a couple of my favorites and 'drowned' them in the bathroom sink. Mom rescued them and dried them out. Wish I still had them all but I think in one of our later family moves, they might have somehow got tossed out as not necessary. I do remember when they quit putting Betsy in the magazine, too. Gone are the days.. :-(

I remember rag curls. My mom would do my hair every time we had something special to go to. I loved paper dolls too.

Jill 01-31-2011 07:48 PM

I remember playing with Betsy McCall paper dolls for hours and hours. The website brought a smile to my face bringing back the memories. I didn't have to sit through the perm each fall, my hair was so curly my mother could hardly get a brush and comb through it!

CarrieAnne 01-31-2011 08:18 PM

Yes, I loved them too!

ewecansew 01-31-2011 08:19 PM

I love the Betsy McCall paper dolls. I used to buy the Mary Englebreight magazine just for the memories. Each one had a doll cutout page (heavier paper or card stock). I think I will be printing some of the Betsy dolls. Sure, I need more things like that. lol

cmputerdazed 01-31-2011 08:20 PM

I remember waiting almost reverently to get our first glimps of the dolls each month. I think there was a year or so where each doll was from a different country and we could hardly wait to see where the next one would be from. I still love paper dolls. And I like that the cloths don't have to be cut out any more. I ruined many dresses before I was a very good cutter.

ewecansew 01-31-2011 08:20 PM

Oh yeah, had the rag curls every saturday night for sunday school and church on Sunday. I am one of 4 daughters and we all got ragged.

patricej 02-01-2011 01:21 AM

i remember those!

thanks for the happy flashback! :-)

Becky Crafts 02-01-2011 03:40 AM

I sure do! I haven't seen them in years!! It was always a special day when my grandmother gave me the new ones.

Becky Crafts 02-01-2011 03:47 AM

I was going to buy the magazine when my girls were little, but I didn't because they had no paperdolls anymore. It was a great marketing strategy; wonder why they stopped and became like a thousand other magazines...

maryb119 02-01-2011 05:56 AM

I remember playing with Betsy McCall paper dolls. I had to wait to see what was on the back of the page before I could cut them out. I didn't dare cut into a "story" to get my dolls!

AmyL 02-01-2011 06:01 AM

I loved paper dolls when I was young. Betsy McCall was one of my favorites. It is so nice to here others loved them too. I made a paper (fabric) doll quilt for my grandaughters birthday last year. I think it was more for me.

AliceQ 02-01-2011 06:09 AM

Loved those paper dolls! I had no sisters so they were ALL MINE!

Maralyn 02-01-2011 06:26 AM

Mother bought very few magazines when I was growing up, but this was one bought especially for her girls who didn't have many "real" dolls.

mummadee 02-01-2011 06:40 AM

Oh Dear God, I remember my yearly Lilt well. It was not just a normal Lilt, I had to go all the way to Nutley (from Newark) so my Aunt Lillian could do the job! Then in every kindergarten picture I look like Bozo the clown. Straight crown, bizarre curls the rest. I thought I was the only one. Thanks for sharing.

Molly B 02-01-2011 06:54 AM

My younger Sis has a Betsy McCall Doll. She loved it as a kid, and still has it, with lots of clothes in her little doll carrying case.

Mona Marie 02-01-2011 07:23 AM

Yes, I remember them!! When I see a Betsy McCall I think of those great times

neeng 02-01-2011 07:44 AM

Oh, I used to love my paper dolls! My mom got me the comic book, Millie the Model, that always had paper dolls in the centrefold.

This is a terrific site, my granddaughters will love it!

beksclen 02-01-2011 08:22 AM

I remember those. Great memories. Remember the little tabs to open up so the paper dolls could stand?

MrsM 02-01-2011 08:31 AM

At summer school for special ed. students we made paper dolls. I brought in fabric and we lamaniated it along with the dolls. We cut out outfits and applied them to the dolls with velcro dots. It was so much fun.

catrancher 02-01-2011 09:24 AM

I remember them too!
