Tried the test. I like the old but will get used to the new. Change is always hard.

Hi, Admin, I haven't had time to reall all the posts, but since people are asking, I have a small request. Please could we have a direct link to the PDA's at the top of the page? As it is, it's a click on the back to home page link, then a scroll down before we can get to the PDAs. Now you have moved the home page link to the left, rather than the right, and it seems more irritating to me. Just a thought. Thank you for trying to sort out all the other things, and I like the idea of being able to delete posts in the PDAs.

like the fact that the ones I've read are in red (no pun intended) I like the blue background also, for some reason the lines between the replies bothers me (that's just me of course)

MsSewer 11-24-2009 04:57 PM

I tested your new site. Loved it. It's so much more organized. Thanks

omak 11-24-2009 06:42 PM

Okay, so I go to PM someone JUST to see what is going to happen ....and, I sent the PM ... and, TOTALLY lost the place where I had been!
Not only that, but I could see that the person I sent it to hadn't opened it yet, and
THEN! I start scrolling down to see what all those emails were, marveling that my pms had been sent over, and THEN!
I realize ... EVERY PM I have ever received is on there, maybe even every one I have sent, and I am thinking NO NO NO !!!
I do not have time for this!
Don't know what is going on, but I tried and tried and tried to get back to where I had just posted the pm from ...and, I may never be able to find that place.
Not that I am panicking or hysterical or anything, but honestly!
I may be too old for this! :?

The colors are much better. The pages under each topic - the "threads" are easy to read. The main page to choose the category seems kinda dark. I like the quick reply. I can't see feature to return to the top of the page when I get to the end of the whole thread. Glad this is just a trial to make improvements on.

shaverg 11-25-2009 06:54 AM

When I hit the watch button at the top it takes me out of the current topic I am viewing and returns me to the list of recent topics, am I doing something wrong?

It's not implemented yet.

Bayou Quilter 11-25-2009 02:23 PM

I like the new format...much easier to read....

bearisgray 11-25-2009 02:29 PM

I still would like more of a division between each item/post in a thread.

DITTOES!

rufree4t 11-25-2009 05:34 PM

I love the new look. It makes things so much easier to see. Keep up the good work!

bearisgray 11-26-2009 08:30 AM

Would there be any way to search for a particular poster within a given thread?

Example: KLue started the Dear Jane Christmas Block Swap thread

I would like to go back and review everything that Rhonda posted -
without having to look back at everything else.

bearisgray 11-26-2009 08:33 AM

Re: Search function

Is there any particular order that the found items show up in?

What is the protocol (is that the right word?) for listing the found items?

Admin 11-26-2009 09:25 AM

bearisgray, first I want to switch the board and iron out all bugs and any critical issues that affect the core functionality.

Once it's running smoothly, I can start adding features.

As for the search, right now I'm not sure if I'm going to continue using this engine or get a new one.
What we have now is run with Apache Lucene. If you are interested in specifics of ranking, you can find more information here:

bearisgray 11-26-2009 09:45 AM

Thank you for responding.

I'm not really complaining - just wondering if - - -

I have no idea of what can be done (easily) or not - -

Who would have imagined that the iphone type devices would be relatively common 50 years ago? (Actually, sci-fi and fantasy writers, and the person that did the Dick Tracy comic strip)

thank you for the link. I think it's written in English, but as far as my comprehension of it, it could be written in outer-galaxy language 1000064.

Basically, I was wondering it items were retrieved by most recent date, or if it searched a particular category first - such as main, and then by date

or if it just started at the beginning of the file - wherever or whatever that might be - and just listed items as they were found

I wanted to know what time it was - not how the clock runs! :?

Admin 11-27-2009 11:48 AM

It tries to rank results by relevance to the query. Time and section doesn't play any role in sorting.

watterstide 11-27-2009 02:01 PM

i just posted too, it looks sleek..!

Barb_MO 11-27-2009 05:17 PM

Each time I check it out, it looks better to me.

I really like both of the search functions in the member list :D :D :D

Why can I not login on the testboard?

I havent been on for a few weeks, so i'm glad i saw this thread tonight. Wow, big changes, very nice admin, thank you. I did go to the new board, and took a quick peak. I was only able to stay for a minute before my eyes and head were throbbing. So i thought, quit being a baby, try it a few more times, and each time it was worse, and then i felt a seizure coming on. The large print is a strain on my eyes, but that's ok, that i can learn very easy. But it's the mauve colour. Makes my head throb immediately. On the home page, and the category pages, the mauve is too bright for me, i dont mean distracting, or something i can get used to, i mean unbearable. Then inside eaqch section, when you go to a thread, those pages don't bother me. On my hd forum, threads that have a new post on them go to the top of the forum, like on this one, and they get a red flag beside them. But also, once you go into the thread, there is a red flag beside the individual posts that you havent read yet. It's like here, when a thread has new comments on it, i have to scroll through and try and figure out which was the last post from the last time i looked at the thread, see what i mean? So what i mean is, just cus you're doing upgrades anyways, if it's possible to red flag individual posts too, that would be really nice. So, because of how bad the new site is glaring, i wasnt able to take time to log in and try some of it out, but i will try and see if i can do that tomorrow.

Bevanger 11-28-2009 05:44 AM

i went back over to check it out and i love it :D

bearisgray 11-28-2009 06:30 AM

I opened another window so I could have both versions up side by side.

I still like the colors and look of the "old" version better. It's much easier on my eyes and I still would like more definition between each post on the thread.

If you feel compelled to make the type a bit bigger, go about halfway up between the "old" and "new" - if this is a 12 point and that one is a 16, make it a 14 (I don't know what size they actually are - just using those numbers as an example)

On the other hand, if it is uncomfortable to use, I would spend MUCH LESS time here, and might actually get some other things done.

I understand that your primary concern right now is to make it function the way you want it to.

My primary concern (and I know this is YOUR board - not mine) is that it's comfortable (easy on my eyes and I don't get eye-ache or headache reading/using the board)

Admin 11-28-2009 07:06 AM

But it's the mauve colour.
I removed all red components from all colors. So it's all shades of blue and gray.

But also, once you go into the thread, there is a red flag beside the individual posts that you havent read yet.
I noticed such functionality too. I won't be implementing it now, but I'll definitely think about add it in the future.

Try the password recovery there and click the auto-login link in the e-mail. That should get you logged in.

It's 11pt.

Here is a screenshot showing the size of the font. Please let me know if the new board's font looks larger or smaller on your computer than what you see in the picture. And post screenshots if you can.

Barb_MO 11-28-2009 11:21 AM

If this is 11 pt. I think that is good. I can read it just fine whereas on the current board, I have to set ie to enlarge to 125 % to be able to read the messages.
Maybe the ones who are thinking the font is too large are using 800X600 as their screen resulation. I have mine 1024X 756.

patricej 11-28-2009 11:27 AM

i'm at 1600 x 1024 and the print is huge.

however, since learning i can adjust the zoom, it's no longer an issue for me.

shaverg 11-28-2009 11:34 AM

I am using 800x1200 it is a great size.

watterstide 11-28-2009 11:45 AM

it looks smaller on the board than what is in the screen shot..to me.

if you tell me how i can check my screen dpi..i am not sure where to look..

bearisgray 11-28-2009 11:48 AM

I just learned how to zoom in and zoom out with the View feature - how do you know how many pixels you have?

watterstide 11-28-2009 11:53 AM

ok, i found it.."START" it is in the "control panel" then "display"..then "settings tab"mine is set at 1280 by 768 pixels
i have XP

Can you tell me admin, are the colours the same today as they were last night when i posted? Because i just popped over there, and the colours werent as harsh on me, so maybe you changed it? Or maybe im getting used to it?

They are the same as last night. I changed them two days ago.
Clear your browser's temporary files to make sure you are seeing the latest version.

Barb M 11-28-2009 12:23 PM

Like a disc cleanup?

Barb M 11-28-2009 12:32 PM

Well this is what i think. Last night the colours were definitely unmanagable for me, and today they are much milder and no problem. So i just asked hubby how do i clean temporary internet files, and he says, oh you don't have to, i just did that this morning LOL. So that explains why it looks better to me today :) It's much better admin, and very do-able for me. I will try logging in there tonight and play around a bit, thanks :)
