Bob Ross painting

Have any of you taken a class by one of their trained painting teachers?
when I’m blue I occasionally watch some of his old programs and it got me to wondering…we can all use some happy little trees I think

I don’t have an artist bone in my body. So, no I’ve never taken a class. But, I absolutely loved his shows. "We don’t make mistakes, just happy accidents."

It's interesting that his shows are once again popular! I can't draw a stick figure with a ruler, so painting is not my thing. But I loved watching - and listening - to his shows. His voice was always so soothing.

Do you watch Jenny Doan (of Missouri Star) YouTube videos? Early this year, she did one with Let's Make Art. Like Bob Ross, they make it look so easy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHM0uR7vLwA

I remember watching his show. He always made it look so easy.

I drive past the exit (Muncie, Indiana) to the Bob Ross Museum when I go to visit my family in the Indianapolis area. One of these days, I really need to plan ahead so I have time to stop. My grandson, now age 10 loves to watch is old shows. I made him a pillow case of happy little clouds and the Bob Ross logo last year for Christmas. I made a happy little boy or more appropriately a little boy happy. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/wink.png

just these responses make me happy :) It is his wet on wet technique that makes his brushwork techniques possible.

It looks so easy the way he explains it. Mine would not turn out though - I’ve tried!

My Grandkids, Micheal and Dawnette, which his old shows. Both are budding artists. Especially Dawnette she is getting pretty good. I recently found a couple of books for her to look over to broaden her horizons.

One of our grandsons painted something following his show. It turned out looking very good.

I’ve done one of his paintings and I was pretty pleased with how it turned out. An interesting fact about his show: he partnered with a couple who helped get his name built up, but in the end they ended up pushing him out of the company. His own son can’t even use his dad’s name because of the legalities. It’s sad really.

I watched the documentary about him this summer. It was/is shameful how his name was used for profit but not for Bob Ross. I honestly felt guilty after buying the "Bob Ross" fabric for my grandson's pillow case knowing that the profit would not benefit his estate only the pockets of those who took advantage of his popularity. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images/smilies/frown.png

The old shows are amazing. And Bob Ross was right. His son really is even a better painter than he was. I highly recommend the documentary mentioned above. The story of what happened to Bob Ross’s son after Bob Ross’s death is heartbreaking. He had done everything so that his son could also benefit. I wish that they would get his son to make some painting shows.

Has everyone seen the Cherrywood Fabrics Bob Ross show? I think the quilts were made in 2020. Don't know if they are on the Cherrywood website, but I remember getting an email about them last year. Awesome how people transformed his paintings into quilts.

If you want a Bob Ross fix whenever, there is a Bob Ross channel on twitch.tv.

oh dear this is really going to date me, before Bob Ross I watched Bill Alexander; I got two or 3 of his books his majice white and several tubes of paint. I did a painting for every one in my family, and my bestie. going back to the 70s and early 80s
does any one else remember Bill?

peaceandjoy 11-10-2021 04:26 AM

It looks like the documentary is available on Netfix - it says about an hour and a half long. YouTube has what is labeled as the "full documentary" but it's only an hour long. So there are some options, even if you don't have Netflix, to see a lot of it.
YouTube also has a Bob Ross channel.

I'm planning to watch the documentary, although it sounds like I won't be happy with the ending.

I can't stream and seldom can get a youtube to load. Outside the big cities a lot of the world doesn't have the connectivity to just watch something :) I was going to try zooming this year, the soonest I've ever been able to connect was after it was in progress for 7 minutes and by then I was locked out. the other times I tried it took even longer.

Anyway, back to Bob, there are Ross trained teachers all over, I think when Rob works out our camping places next year I'll set up a class for us, how fun is that? Why not, I say!

I love to watch Bob Ross. So sorry the Vultures are always pouncing on innocent people to take away what they worked for.
With all the other laws we have one more wouldn't hurt.

Sorry to hear that your connectivity is not good enough for streaming. On one hand, you do miss a lot - but on the other hand, many of us - myself included! - probably waste more time than we should online, simply bc we can! During lockdowns, that would be harder, simply bc so many things were done via zoom. Personally, I didn't care for it, but know many who did. A couple of friends took zoom classes and said they really worked well. Meh. Maybe I'll try it sometime.

Taking one of the painting classes sounds like something you'd enjoy, so I'd definitely put that on the list of places to scope out for the coming year. Anticipation is half the fun - what a nice way to spend the time until spring comes around!

Oh gosh yes, i took classes on the way home from work. They were held at the Senior Center I drove by daily. Well that was in Colorado. But you should be able to find classes somewhere. it took a couple classes to do a painting. slow but sure was the game. Not bad though.
I can't find any photos of mine but i have about four of them left. The ones I really liked. Go for it.

KalamaQuilts 11-17-2021 01:10 PM

would love to see pictures if you run across your paintings! If I do run across a teacher somewhere where we travel I will take a class, but don't intend to take up the hobby, we live in a A-frame and I don't have any flat walls to hang stuff on, those walls are taken up with cupboards and shelves etc. I do have 3 small walls in the upstairs bathroom though ;)

lberna 11-27-2021 01:04 PM

Years ago, my son insisted on watching his show. I remember saying something like - you going to watch someone paint? After I watched it, I was hooked.
