Book Readers (What books are you reading) Let's Chit Chat

do you also belong to your local library?

Darlene 06-15-2010 02:54 AM

I just finished A Rose by the Door by Deborah Bedford. It was a wonderful book. I do belong to my library.

tmg 06-15-2010 02:57 AM

I try to prof read my kids books. By the way is a full time read. My 14 year old daughter is reading Shakespeare the unrevised ones and this is by chose. My son 17 year old son like all kinds of books. I don't prof read many of his anymore.

barnbum 06-15-2010 03:06 AM

tmg--good for you!!!

I just finished "Just Breathe" by Susan Wiggs--it was awesome. I just started "The Horseman's Daughter" by the same author--so far I love it. Amazing writing!!

I haven't read a novel for pleasure in so long--it feels wonderful--even better--to know there's a good book waiting when I'm ready.

Our local library is quaint and cozy. I went there when in elementary school and on--took my kids there since they were babies--and still go. I love that I can put any book on hold in the whole system and it will be delivered to this library. I don't buy books anymore--well, fiction for me anyway. I still buy books for my profession and for students.

Next week, my class is walking to the library close to the school--just to make sure everyone's library cards are updated and ready to go and to discover where the young adult books are!

I could hang out in a library all day.

no1jan 06-15-2010 03:16 AM

I have difficulty reading because of my eyes, but I love listening to audio tapes. I have a large collection plus borrow them from the library.

Currently I am listening to "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen.

sunflower126 06-15-2010 03:20 AM

I am reading The House on Olive Street by Robyn Carr. It is a good book as are all of hers. This one was a bit hard to get into for some reason. Moving along better now. Yes I do belong to the library. Ours is very small compared to the one in the town we moved from. I spend a lot of time reading.

marymc 06-15-2010 03:45 AM

I love to read. Our book club just read "A Reliable Wife". We will be getting together Thursday to discuss it. I am also reading "Mudbound" which is really well written. I like to buy my books but I do carry a library card and stop in there. My daughter is an English major in her final year. She is hosting book club this month and I am eager to see what she will suggest for next months book.

sueisallaboutquilts 06-15-2010 04:06 AM

The library is my best friend!! :D Seriously, I love to go and have my whole life. Thanks, Craftybear, for starting this thread. I LOVE talking about books and getting new titles.
I just got 12 audiobooks. They are great for just about any activity I engage in.
I am reading and listening to several at the moment :)

If I hadn't been a nursing major I would have been an English major. I loved my Humanities courses, especially b/c nursing courses are really tough!! It was such a nice change from all the anatomy and physiology of everything

anicra 06-15-2010 04:24 AM

I just finished, "The Forgotten Garden" by Kate Morton. It was an excellent book and I'm looking forward to reading more of her books. Since I lie in the back of beyond - 20 miles from the closest grocery and department stores, I'm very happy my wonderful library is only 9 miles away!

raptureready 06-15-2010 04:24 AM

I just read Civil War Quilt Diary, and recently the third in the Winsome Ways of Miss Eudora Rumph series by Catherine Ritch Guess. Hilarious books.

janRN 06-15-2010 04:59 AM

I love to read but you ladies are shaming me. I love trashy true crime novels, esp by Ann Rule. I guess they are my "guilty pleasure". I got hooked on Ann Rule when she wrote "The Stranger Beside Me" about Ted Bundy. She was a police officer, detective, etc., yet worked side by side with him for years while the killings were going on. Just proves you can't judge a person by his appearance. I read 3-4 books per week; get most of them from co-workers and thrift shop. Don't belong to library but did when I was in school.

Beachbound 06-15-2010 05:04 AM

I have loved to read my whole life. I try to read 100 books a year but I'm way behind this~ only 27 so far (I got a new sewing machine for Christmas ;-) ) Right now I am reading Vison in White by Nora Roberts...sure it's fluff but just right for summer reading!! Love Susan Wiggs!!! If you liked her try Mary Alice Monore, Dorothea Benton Frank, ...oh I could go on & on LOL!!!

Pam B 06-15-2010 05:20 AM

I just finished WINTER GARDEN by Kristin Hannah. It was an excellent novel. I love to read and I have to be careful, if I have a novel I am really enjoying, then reading is the only thing I want to do. I do frequent the public library...as a matter of fact, for many years I was on the board of trustees. I am considering buying myself a Nook because when I cannot get a book at the library when I want to read it, I will often just go to the bookstore and buy it. Now I have too many books and not enough space for them.

Pamela Artman 06-15-2010 05:42 AM

I just finished "Same Kind of Different As Me" by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. This is a true story about a homeless man who worked on a cotton plantation in Louisiana, an international art dealer, and the relationship that forms between them when the art dealer and his wife start working at a homeless shelter. It was very moving, to the point that I cried through two whole chapters. I do have a library card but I have so many people that I trade books with, it seems I never run out of books. Has anyone read the series by Diana Gabaldon? I've read the first 5 but I think there's 7 or 8 by now. I want to read them again and get the rest of them. They are awesome!

LindaR 06-15-2010 05:48 AM

I've been into Nora Roberts lately...The Calhoun sisters, The Key series, she is such a story teller...Love Robyn Carr also, Have read all 11 Virgin Rivers Series...

That was such a good book....

redkimba 06-15-2010 05:49 AM

I do belong to my local library - they have an excellent selection of books.

I just finished reading "the Lost German Slave Girl" by John Bailey. it was about a famous case of a German woman who was originally indentured as a girl then enslaved.

Before that I read "The Candy Bombers: The Untold Story of the Berlin Airlift and America's Finest Hour". Little bit of a dry read, but really good.

Now I'm treating myself to a Sookie Stackhouse book. Need a little bit of brain-candy. :)

Boston1954 06-15-2010 06:00 AM

Right now I am into one called "Northern Dancer". It is about the first horse to win the Kentucky Derby in 2 minutes flat.

quiltedrunner 06-15-2010 06:03 AM

Jodi Picoult is definitely one of my favs! I also enjoy Nora Roberts, Nicholas Sparks, and anything that just looks like it might be good... :D I also truly enjoy just sitting down with my Bible and scanning, especially Psalms.

Psalms is wonderful.

mamaw 06-15-2010 06:17 AM

I am almost done Songs of the Humpback Whale by Jodi Picoult...good book; but keeps jumping from character to character. After seeing My Sister's Keeper, I decided I wanted to read all of her books.
I grew up loving to read always have a book going.

shaverg 06-15-2010 06:19 AM

Right now I am reading Survivors Club by Lisa Gardner.

I average about a book a week and sometimes more. I like Jennifer Chiavarini, Emilie Richards for quilt related novels. But really enjoy mysteries and funny ones too. Janet Evanovich is one of my favorites as well as Nevada Barr, Iris Johansen, Fern Michaels Sisterhood series. I like Alexander McCalls No. 1 Ladies Detective Agencies, the Twighlight Series, Dan Brown, John Grisham. These are just a few and I could go on and on. I like anything about the South too. I also like the Medford series by Jan Karon. But not really into trashy Romance Novels.

I read so much I keep and excel spread sheet.

I love our library. But our YMCA has a book exchange every quarter. We can bring and take as many books as we like. I buy a lot of trade paperbacks from our local library and they are so cheap. Then I always have a bag of books to donate to either the Y or the library.

Sue Fish 06-15-2010 06:38 AM

I belong to my local library and am there every week...I mostly listen to books as I never seem to have time to just sit and read and the audio books are wonderful for multitasking..makes boring jobs like ironing, treadmill, vaccuming etc seem to go faster,
Anyone read The Help? I loved it...

CarrieAnne 06-15-2010 06:38 AM

Right now Im reading We Had Everything But Money, Priceless Memories of the Great Depression. Really good, and small stories, so I can pick itup, read quick and put down.

I loved Water for Elephants, although I like the act of reading.

I really don't enjoy books on tape unless traveling. If the time comes I can only listen to books on tape, I will. But while I can still physically read I will. It is my way to relax. I like to read outside.

CarrieAnne 06-15-2010 06:44 AM

I want to try some books on tape, to listen to while mowing the lawn. Our lawn is big so its boring!

LOVE LOVE LOVE Diana Gabaldon!!!
The latest book was not the best, IMHO. It was a bit more disjointed, or maybe just because she has SO MANY loose ends floating around that she WANTS to work with...

Right now, I am on a Susan Elizabeth Phillips kick, alternated by a Suzanne Brockmann Troubleshooters book...

But the last book I finished the other night was Sherrilyn Kenyon.
And I have the Janet Evanovich 16 on order at the library, although they said the wait was long and it doesn't come out till the 22...

Auntie M 06-15-2010 08:02 AM

almost finished with the Percy Jackson series/Riordan (the one the movie is made after--juvenile fiction)really fun reading and keeps me up to date with my students. The Hunger games series has a dark side seriously not for the below 14 yrs. Adult wise- Sarah's Key -WWII French involvement based on true events - good read keep tissues handy.

Pats8e8 06-15-2010 08:03 AM

I usually stick with James Patterson or Mary Higgins Clark. But recently read a Tami Hoag, what a scary book! My daughter likes her so I ordered it and read it, mailed it off to her yesterday. I think the name was Deeper Than Dead? Bad huh, can't remember the name but sure remember the story. Also like Catherine Coulter, her husband/wife FBI stories are very good I think. And then there is Janet Evanovich, love her cool, funny stories. I have bunches of them, sent one of them to my DD also. Looking forward to a lot of reading over the summer now that school is out.

fabric-holic 06-15-2010 08:03 AM

I just can't get into novels (I had a terrible time in English classes when we had to read Silas Marner, The Yearling, etc. Great books but really a struggle for me).
So I read non-fiction only.
History and/or pre-1950 Hollywood bios are my faves.
Right now I'm reading Ted Kennedy's autobiography and one about FDR.
I also have a couple Lincoln books waiting, and one about Joan Blondell.
I usually have at least 2 books going at once.

Pats8e8 06-15-2010 08:11 AM

BTW I do belong to our library, which is a wonderful new building, but don't get there often. We also exchange books at class, have two big file drawers full of them. When we are done with them, I box them up and take them to our local Veteran's home.

Ditto on too many books and not enough storage space! My boyfriend, who is not a big reader, is dumbfounded by the amount of books I own. To me, they're like friends, some of which I'll revisit.

Last Christmas, he bought me the Nook. Love it! Completely forget I'm reading an e-Book. It's wonderful for when I'm flying somewhere -- no more need to pack multiple books or, if I finish one on the trip, no more buying at the airport at an exhorbitant price! The best feature is the ability to buy a new book from a favorite author when it first comes out; no more waiting for the paperback!

My favorites tend to be action thrillers from Clive Cussler and such. I also love the classics and, in fact, just downloaded one of my all time favorites to my Nook, the "Count of Monte Cristo."

I am definitely getting a Nook this Christmas. My present to me, lol. I have been turning all those rewards points from my CC into gift cards to Barnes and Noble. I should be able to get it for nothing, by the time I am done. I want to wait till version 2.0 is out in the fall, at the least. If I have enough 'points' before Xmas it may be an early Xmas gift!!!

fluffbug95 06-15-2010 08:38 AM

I love to read! I am reading the Undead series! I just go online, and reserve the next book, and then in comes in from another library! I just love that, it's makes it so much easier to find the book you are looking for. :)

I also love to read horse books and magazines in my free time.

Aunt Doggie 06-15-2010 08:46 AM

I CAN'T beleive Not ONE OF You Quilters has mentioned any of the quilt novels!!!
Earlene Fowler is the WORLD's best! Her Benni Harper character is awesome!!Started with couple of her used books, and just bought the last two I was missing! Addicting!!

Clare O'Donohue has three quilting books that are great, and don't forget Terri Thayer's three books which I just started!
Then there is the series by the author EVERYONE knows, Jennifer Chiaverini!

If you haven't picked up one of Earlene Fowler's books, you need to do so now!! :D

barnbum 06-15-2010 08:50 AM

I'm looking for a long thick paged series to read, sink into, escape to this summer... historical fiction is my favorite. What would you suggest?

Quiltin'Lady 06-15-2010 08:54 AM

I spend a half-hour on a BART train going to and from work every day, so I get a lot of reading done. I also love to listen to books while I knit or quilt.

Left to my own devices, I tend to find an author and then work my way through their entire collection [I'm fortunate enough to have five different library systems within easy access]. My book group reads a much wider range, so I do get some variety.

(* = the books with the best "readers"; # = a special favorite author)

My favorite mystery/detective authors are PD James#, Elizabeth George#, JD Robb*, Donna Leon*, Janet Evanovich, Nevada Barr, Martha Grimes (except the last few), Jeffery Deaver, Dick Francis, etc., etc.

I love anything by Alexander McCall Smith*#. [The woman who reads the "No. 1 Detective Agency" series is especially wonderful!]

Other recent and/or favorite books have included:
-- Any of several by Jodi Picoult, Amy Tan, Barbara Kingsolver
-- "A Prayer for Owen Meany"## and "The World According to Garp"# by John Irving
-- "The Time Traveler's Wife"# by Audrey Niffenegger
-- "Small Island"# by Andrea Levy
-- "Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Stout
-- "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote
-- "Everything Is Illuminated"# by Jonathan Safran Foer [watch the movie first and then read it, so you can hear their voices in your head]
-- "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"# by Jonathan Safran Foer
-- "People of the Book" by Geraldine Brooks
-- "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austin [so much better when read as an adult!] Extra treat: Read it in conjunction with Pamela Aidan's "Fitzwilliam Darcy, Gentleman" series to get both sides of the story.
-- "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows#
-- Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series
-- the "Eregon" series by Christopher Paolini
-- "And the Ladies of the Club" by Helen Hooven Santmyer#
-- "The Green Mile" by Stephen King [I actually like most of his stories. Just don't listen to one while taking a road trip -- you'll never stop!]
-- "The Lord of the Rings" by JRR Tolkein [I re-read this every decade or so, just to remind myself how good it is.]

I also love a good science fiction story (with the emphasis on "story"). Some of my favorites are David Brinn's "Uplift War" series, James White's "Sector General" series, Ursula LeGuin, Margaret Atwood, Theodore Sturgeon, etc.

And I'm a sucker for a good kid's book -- Lemony Snickett and his orphans, the Narnia series, the Borrowers, etc. etc.

There just aren't enough hours in the day to read all the books I want to read, to make all the quilts I want to make (or have fabric for!), or to knit all the things I want to knit.... I'll just have to live longer, I guess!
