One of the best books I've read this year was "Random Family". I also really liked "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" and "Molokai"

OP: I am a book buyer in my 9-5 job, so I read a lot too! You've received a lot of good recommendations already to read now, so here are 2 books I have had the pleasure and privilege of reading the advances on recently:
Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult (on sale in March) - excellent, one of her best since My Sisters Keeper Left Neglected by Lisa Genova (on sale next week 1/4) - another homerun by the author of Still Alice (also recommend if you haven't read it) Happy reading! and if any of you are curious to know if your favorite author will be releasing a new book this year, just ask, I'm happy to pass on the information as my publishers send it... I love reading Marie Bostwick's books about her quilt shop and surviving cancer...I read them while I was have chemo and she gave me inspiration and hope that life does go on after cancer.

For those of you who enjoyed Jodi Picoult's House Rules try
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. It give amazing insight into the workings of an autistic mind. Haddon has worked with autistic children and adults for years and draws on his experience to write an excellent story. For those of you who enjoyed Abraham Verghese, have you tried his non-fiction works? My Own Country - A Doctor's Story is a wonderful book detailing a free clinic he set up in Johnson City, TN. The Tennis Partner is the story of the slow fall into drugs of his tennis partner. The tennis partner is one of those people you'd never expect to fall into addiction. It's another great read. |
