Yessssss. I use the dough setting and let it do the first rise.then shape and bake in the oven, We think it tastes better that way. I also make my hamburger and hot dog buns, bagels and english muffins. Good healthy old fashioned eating.

lynndianne 07-23-2011 05:20 AM

Now I want some fresh bread with butter.....yummmm

I like to mix the dough in my breadmaker and then bake it myself. I love to make English Muffins and Bagels. I also make my favorite white bread recipe and then I "braid" three
strands together, let it rise, brush with an egg wash and sprinkle with seseme or poppy seeds. People are so impressed wth homemade bread. I am not baking too much in this heat. But as soon as it cools off a bit I'll be back at it!

King Arthur bread mixes rock in our house. You can also find bread mixes at Wally Mart and around the holidays you can find them all over the place!

newbee 07-23-2011 06:21 AM

I am on a low-carbohydrate diet and I still use my bread maker! The breads made from a recipe are much better than using a boxed mix. You can find good bread machine cookbooks used on Amazon and I know the internet will have tons of recipes. I got my low-carb ones from Dana Carpender's "500 Low-Carb Recipe" cookbook. I have also found bread machine cookbooks at thrift shops.

Iamquilter 07-23-2011 06:52 AM

I use my bread machine in cool weather. Use it for the first rise and then take it out and knead it and put in my own pans so the loaves are not so big. Love home made bread.

Ramona Byrd 07-23-2011 06:57 AM

I won one in a drawing, used it a few times then gave it away.
I throughly enjoy pounding heck out of a blob of dough. I like to think it keeps me calm and serene...at least most of the time.

Tudey 07-23-2011 06:58 AM

All kinds of great bread machine recipes online---I am amassing quite the collection!

Joyce DeBacco 07-23-2011 07:00 AM

I shouldn't have clicked on this post. You're making me hungry for bread and I can't eat wheat bread because I have celiac disease. My bread is gluten free and comes in 12 oz. loaves that cost about $5.00 a loaf. I've tried baking my own with acceptable GF flours but they just don't come out right. Oh, woe is me.

Owllady 07-23-2011 07:00 AM

Homemade bread is the best. No ready mixes here. Only takes about 3 minutes to put everything in and it is so good. There are many different recipes out there and you are sure to find one your family makes a favorite. I have one that uses oatmeal that is really good. Try it, you will like it.

salsalady 07-23-2011 07:16 AM

you can get bread mixes from Thepreparedpantry.com i get mine there have some good mixes. Lorene

Yes I do and I just looked up bread machine recipes and get links

grannypat7925 07-23-2011 07:33 AM

I got a recipe book with my bread machine. I use mine more to make the dough and then bake in an ordinary bread pan in the oven. Like the finished product better this way. There should be plenty of bread machine recipes on the Internet.

Limey 07-23-2011 07:39 AM

For all the bread books I have, I use "Electric Bread" the most. Like many others, I mostly use the machine for dough; it makes it easier to adjust recipes, depending on the weather, etc.

dottientx 07-23-2011 07:59 AM

Our local grocery stores carry the mixes for bread machines. You'll find them in with the flours. I never use them as over the years I have practically memorized my favorite recipes. Love the pepperoni/onion but make several different ones. Use my machine all the time. Lost count of how many I've worn out through the years.

Debra Mc 07-23-2011 08:38 AM

You don't need mixes. It is cheaper to make up your own. It is also cheaper. I buy my yeast in bulk at Sam's Club & it is good for well over a year. What I don't use goes down the drain. It is so cheap I don't worry about whether I use it all. I store in a jar in the frig. Way too many good recipes online as well as cookbooks. Are you looking for a particiular recipe. Maybe we can all help.

patchsamkim 07-23-2011 09:17 AM

I still use mine...mostly the recipes that are in the book...and also use it to make pizza crust dough for homemade pizza...which we love and make a lot...bread maker gets used for that more than bread these days... but at least still gets used!

SewExtremeSeams 07-23-2011 09:40 AM

I found recipes online by doing a search for breadmaker recipes. For the most part, I use the doughmaker function of the machine. It mixes the dough and does the first rising and then, you take the dough out, punch it down, shape into loaves and put it in your loaf pans to rise. Then, I bake it in the oven. This is our favorite way of using our breadmaker. It is such a blessing and fills our home with wonderful smells. I seem to go through phases of using it a lot and then, not using it.

Mixes are a waste of money, IMHO, as it only takes about 5 minutes to assemble the ingredients into your breadmaker.

romanojg 07-23-2011 09:59 AM

I love my bread maker. Most of the grocery stores around here sell the mixes. I do it from scratch. I have the Zorushki (not spelled right); it does breads, cakes, jams and jellies, etc. Check the internet and the bookstores; you can find recipe books just for bread makers

Rann 07-23-2011 11:43 AM

A lot of bookstores have them in the cheap marked down books.

amandasgramma 07-23-2011 11:53 AM

I just use any bread recipe that doesn't require more than 4 cups of flour in mine. :) But -- I do NOT bake the breads in the breadmaker.....they just don't turn out right. I get them to a point, turn them out and form into rolls or put in loaf pan, and bake in the oven.

You also have to watch the altitude you live in...I'm at 4300 feet and I have to reduce the yeast by 1/2 tsp per package of yeast or the bread will raise right up out of the breadmaker.

and I, too, shouldn't have read this -- now I want cinnamon rolls!

sjdal 07-23-2011 12:15 PM

Bob's Red Mill has wonderful mixes, recipes, and helpful tips. I can buy the mixes at a local health food store, but can measure all ingredients from scratch in 5 minutes for big savings.

busygranny 07-23-2011 12:53 PM

The only bread we eat, is what I make in my bread machine. Don't use mixes. I use the receipes in my book that came with the machine. I did go out and buy 6 air tight plastic containers and I make my own mixes. I just assembly line measure every thing, seal and use them when it's bread making time. When I empty the last one, out comes all the ingredients and I fill them up again. Works really good and we love the home made breads. My grand kids come to get "Hot Bread"

scrappylouisa 07-23-2011 01:59 PM

I own 3 breadmakers! One my husband bought for me before I had carpel tunnel surgery on both hands. I bought one at a yard sale for 50 cents....new in box and had never been used. The third one was my parents.....they had received it as a gift and never used it.

I love making all kinds of breads, dinner rolls, hamburger and hot dog buns, doughnuts, and my husband's favorite....cinnamon buns.

I've found numerous recipes on line for lots of different types of bread, etc.

mnadz 07-23-2011 02:38 PM

You can all try - www.allrecipes.com - tons of recipes there!

Sounds yummy. Do you have any recipes you would care to share? On the donuts you mentioned, are you just making the dough and then deep frying them?

Connie in CO 07-23-2011 03:55 PM

Mine just sits.

IDquilter 07-23-2011 04:05 PM

Mine came with a booklet and I also purchased a bread machine book with lots of recipes. I used it a lot but not lately, it is as close to homemade as I can get.

TheStitcher 07-23-2011 04:44 PM

I use my Bread Maker often and refer to this website. it's Robin Hood and it's great. http://robinhood.ca/recipe-category.aspx?cid=53

You can go to Bakers Catalog, they have bread machines and receipes all on line. Good luck

jamie Watson 07-23-2011 06:12 PM

did you not get a book with it?

writerwomen 07-23-2011 06:47 PM

Have had 2 different bread makers and would never replace making it myself with that. Don't like the taste or texture- would rather vest the money in a professional level Kitchen aid and make several good loaves at a time

sammy89 07-23-2011 06:49 PM

i use it to making dough in recipes with yeast and cinnamon rolls and for making frenchbread

Debra Mc 07-23-2011 07:05 PM

I always use the light crust setting so the bread doesn't bake to hard of a crust. Have 3 machines & I love them both. Best thing ever invented

GrannyHanaDa 07-23-2011 08:36 PM

I use mine all the time and love it.
I have never used the bread mixes.

BellaBoo 07-23-2011 09:36 PM

I put flour, water, salt and yeast in my breadmaker and just use the dough setting. When it's finished with the first rise I take it out and shape it into a loaf or rolls. Let rise again and then bake. Just the first rising it's ready for great pizza dough. I use steam bread pans and make the seasoned loaves like Subway has. I just as the seasoning, cheese and other ingredients to the dough after first rise. Caution: Don't do this unless you want to do it all the time. My family expects fresh bread daily. LOL

Annaquilts 07-23-2011 09:48 PM

We run two machines daily and have for about 20 years. We have 2 panasonic bread makers. We buy wheat at the health food store and grind it. Also at Costco here they have white bread flour. It is made from hard wheat and has a higher gluten content. Lately we have bought the instand bakers yeast on line. The other ingredients like flax seeds we find at the local health food store.

Years ago we bought a book called Bread Machine Magic by Linda Rehberg and Lois Conway. As for the mixes have you tried ordering online? We never used the mix.

iamsuthern2 07-24-2011 10:32 AM

I find mixes at walmart all the time. i have been wanting to do the scratch stuff but not sure if it would owrk in a bread machine. my kids def like the homemade bread better.

"from scratch" is ALL I do in my machine, and it works great! I encourage you to try it!
