I just washed a full load of fabrics in a wide array of colors...think it was about 18 one yard cuts....and a 10 yard piece of white on white!
would you believe that color catchers (2) came out white..like nothing was ever near them! is it possible to use these color catchers again? just because they look unused, how do you know if the chemical or what ever it is they used on it will work for the next load? |
that's an interesting thought... i'll keep watching for the answer
|
Have not used them myself but interested in finding out.
|
Yep you can. Actually numerous times.

I tear mine in half so they can cover the load and love how they make washing NEW fabric so easy..especially now that I have a clothesline to hang it out on..less loads, saves $$ for more STUFF..hehhe |
How does one know when they are no longer effective?

I might use them twice, but doubt I would chance it more than that! |
I re-use mine until they show color, then I throw them away.

were can you buy color catcher? I looked at Wat-Mart and they didn't carry them.
|
I re-use mine all the time. If they have just a hint of color I still use them and find them effective.
|
For what it's worth, I use mine until they are pretty gray. If I'm really worried about the fabric running I will throw in an extra one.
|
I use them when prewashing my fabrics, but hadn't really thought of reusing them. I will have to give that a try, thanks!
|
Thanks, everyone! I didn't know this either!

I can only get them at walmart or the base commissary!
|
re-using for laundry, do not know. heard that some were putting the "used" for backgrounds in their fabric post cards.
|
I've used them more than once, and when they come out white, I dry them by putting them flat on the dryer. I'll use them till they come out pink or colored darker, then toss them.
Better to be safe than expensively sorry. |
I have re-used the ones where the fabric didn't do much bleeding. I make sure they don't go in the dryer.

From the Shout Color Catcher site:
http://www.shoutitout.com/preserve-colors.aspx Note: Effectiveness not guaranteed if large amounts of dye bleed from non-colorfast garments. Use reasonable care when washing whites with colors and when washing new garments for the first time. |
There is a product on the market that I use that is the same as the Color Catcher but you can use it up to 30 times. It's called Dye Grabber, by Carbona. I've been using them for years and they work just like the color catchers. They are in the same place at the grocery store too. I wouldn't dare to use the color catcher more than once, but maybe I'm just a big chicken.

I use them up to 20 times, depending on just how much dye they catch.

Check the detergent aisle of Walmart - they are the only place around here that does carry them. Or ask at your local grocery store if they can get them.
|
I reuse them all the time, over and over until they are a color I want. Then I use them to make things like book covers or fabric bowls....or whatever! Our local grocery store carries them. I would try Walmart though. As far as effectiveness, they seem to work and work and work! Good luck! Marian :)

I use the Carbona brand dye grabber which has a control dial on the back. It works for up to 30 washloads. I keep a pen handy & mark it off with each use. They are white to begin with, but turn green with use. Of all the fabric that I have washed only one bleed & still can't get it all out of the white part of the print. Will have to use it in a quilt instead of the garment it was meant to be.
|
I have used them more than once. I use a new one if it's very inportant--like insurance on a finished quilt--but if I have a used one, I use it to test for color-fastness on yardage. They still pick up dye if there is fading. I keep washing until there is no fading. Used ones are great for that.

I have read that you can use a white washcloth. Have wondered if it is the actual "material" rather than chemicals that make them work. If you have something fade in a regular load of clothes, something like men's underwear usually catches the color and other items will be totally unaffected

Thanks, I've never thought about reusing them. I'll definitely give that a try.
|
I reuse my Color Catchers all the time. There are some on the market that tell you to use them for 30 washes. They're made of a terry material. But I also use the paper type, until it's dark. Never had a problem.
|
I get mine in the grocery store. I shop Publix, and they are on the top shelf with the detergents, hand washable soaps, etc.

Yes, you can definitely reuse them. I use mine 3-4 times. Have used them since they 1st came on the market,8-9 yrs. ago. Originally they looked like terry cloths and could be used forever. I had 1 for ea. machine (3 in the bldg.) and they lasted about a yr. I wouldn't think of doing laundry without them. |

You've heard of a woman's intuition? LOL |
Our Wal-Mart has them. They are in the section with the shout.
