I got to the checkout at Walmart no cash, no credit cards!
I checked to see if I had left them in the car but no, not there.
Talked to the manager and he took my name and said he would tell the cashiers not to accept my cards. No sorry about that or anything. Didn't work.
When I got home I had a call from both security departments from Visa and Discover wanting to talk to me about fraudulent use of my card.
One card they got 4 purchases of about $350 total and the other card they got $450 from another store. They were shopping while I was looking for my card! It will be interesting to see how much more they got before the card was reported missing.

The manager offered to let me call from the store to cancel cards
but he looked for 10 sec and said he couldn't find the numbers and to call when I got home. It took 45 min to get home. I called the police to report it but have to go there tomorrow.

I never put my purse down in any store so they got it while I was wearing my purse. I do have the bad habit of not zipping it and just dumping the cards and cash in there. They didn't take the empty wallet so I have my drivers license! They did leave me my ATM card so I was able to pay for my purchases. They are slick!

Be extra careful all of you!

okiepastor 12-17-2010 04:14 PM

They can scan your credit cards without stealing them,by getting close to your purse or wallet! ---so make sure you do NOT have the ones with the stupid RFID

Leann 12-17-2010 04:15 PM

What a nightmare for you. Thanks for reminding us how vulnerable we all are.

Sadiemae 12-17-2010 04:15 PM

So sorry! You aren't safe anywhere.

RkayD 12-17-2010 04:16 PM

make sure you keep a password on your phone also...they can scan all your info off of that too.

Ditter43 12-17-2010 04:17 PM

Somebodies working on bad karma...I am sorry that happened to you! :-(

Magdalena 12-17-2010 04:18 PM

So sorry you have to go through this (((hugs)))

emc1118 12-17-2010 04:19 PM

That's too bad just before Christmas. Hope it doesn't take long to straighten out.

QuiltingGrannie 12-17-2010 04:22 PM

So sorry this happened to you.

Good advice to all to pay close attention to your purse and what is in it, keep it close and keep it closed.

I work at Walmart and see all too often women who just leave their purse sit in the seat of the shopping cart and walk away! Others have them wide open as they walk around and shop.

Thieves are out and about especially this time of year.
They are quick and they are good!

quiltinghere 12-17-2010 04:23 PM

Sorry that happened.

I would have call information 411 and got the credit card companies phone numbers right then and there at the store or on my cell phone right there in the store.

If a crime happens and you leave the location, you'll need to return to the town/city police station to file reports. Call them while you're at the location and they'll come out (unless it's a state of emergency).

When thugs steal honest people's cards, they know exactly where they're going to shop and what they're going to 'steal'...and as you saw, it'll be done before you report it.

I hope the matter gets resolved to your satisfaction and their jail time!

OHSue 12-17-2010 04:24 PM

A fried of mine once had her cards stolen and she made the observation that they were living better than she did on her cards.

ptquilts 12-17-2010 04:33 PM

so sorry this happened to you, at least you caught it right away and you won't be responsible for the charges.

People worry about using their CC's online but you are about 10x as likely to have a problem using them in person.

amma 12-17-2010 04:37 PM

(((HUGS))) So sorry that this happened to you :(

mollymct 12-17-2010 04:40 PM

Ugh! I am so sorry this happened to you! The thieves have been horrible here this year. I am not taking my purse inside the store with me--leaving it in the trunk! I need to check my cards for that RFID. I guess I need to be checking my bank account more often, too!

Tcharlie 12-17-2010 05:19 PM

Glad you caught it so quickly.....I recommend to everyone to carry the phone numbers to call put in a safe place for quick recovery.

RevPam 12-17-2010 06:07 PM

Oh, I'm so sorry! What a stressful situation!

CarrieAnne 12-17-2010 06:54 PM

Ugh...so sorry! Thats just awful!

donnaree59 12-17-2010 07:03 PM

Oh I am so sorry... It is so terrible what people will do now. People just don't have consciences (sp?) any more.

susiequilt 12-17-2010 07:45 PM

I forgot they also got two new Starbucks gift cards.

I can just see them now sitting at a Starbucks, drinking MY coffee and just laughing their heads off!

Oh, well. It could have been worse. The one good thing was that was the last store I was going to so I got all my shopping done including a visit to Joann's before I lost my cards and money!

pookie ookie 12-17-2010 07:49 PM

So sorry. Did you stop and talk to anyone? Even someone you know can be used to distract you. I got ripped off by neighbors.

nativetexan 12-17-2010 08:12 PM

I see more young people not taking care of their purses, just letting them hang behind their bodies or letting the strap hand in their fingertips. makes me cringe. I hold mine close to my body with my elbow over it. always have.

In Houston, my sister had her purse ripped out of her arms in a pharmacy and she chased the thief out to his car and beat on his window! she didn't get her purse back but he just drove off, thank goodness.

CoyoteQuilts 12-17-2010 08:38 PM

A tip about your cards: Make photo copies of front and back so if this ever happens you have phone and card numbers.

It has been on the increase around here too.

Ack! I know that's the first thing instinct makes us do. But she's lucky that's all that happened. Especially living in Houston!

Sweetness 12-17-2010 08:48 PM

I'm sorry. I hope that the companies handle your issues quickly and I'm glad it wasn't your ATM card. My friend had 2 $300 transactions on her ATM card back to back. The only thing that saved her was the cash withdrawl limit. She was at a gas station ATM and the best they can figure out somehow it didn't log her out at the end (or time out) and the next person took the most advantage he could before using his ATM card. When I'm going out shopping I don't carry a purse anymore, I make sure to wear jeans and put my cell phone in one of the front pockets & drivers license/CC/cash in the other.

Momma_K 12-17-2010 09:10 PM

This time of year I don't do CC's or checks. I do however make sure I have plenty of cash when I go shopping. I never ever keep it in my purse but in "Grandma's Bank" my bra! I've been told many of times that was the smartest thing to do, men as well tell me they don't blame me, their wife does the same thing then smile. But I do remove it with a little class and privacy. But I don't take the risk of getting ripped off! Also I never put my reciept in the bag with the items I bought. If you get ripped off then they can return the merchandis, so keep your reciepts in your coat pocket along with the change you don't put in your bra!
OK, so it sounds stupid, crude and hillbillyish, but it works!

Ramona Byrd 12-17-2010 09:29 PM

I absolutely LOVE inside pockets in jackets. It really burns me up that men get them all the time in their jackets, but ours cost as much or more and still we don't have that sort of protection for our credit cards, money or IDs. I try to find matching fabric for mine and make patch pockets, or else a regular pocket inside, under the breast which hides it. A good jacket will have enough of a "drop" to let it be unnoticed.
And I always, every single trip to a grocery store or other stores, see women sit their open purse in the shopping cart and then wonder away, or lean over looking at stuff, while masses of other people walk right by it. I try to warn them and they are always shocked to discover they've done something so stupid, but I've seen the same ones doing the very same thing, in the same visit!! They'll have to learn the hard way.

mmonohon 12-17-2010 09:36 PM

As a previous assistant manager of a small business, you have access to the card company number at all times because it has to be on every machine as well as in the office. You call that company and they can forward you accordingly if needed. It brings up a lot of questions that the manager was unaware of this.....

Vanuatu Jill 12-17-2010 10:35 PM

How horrible for you!! My DH is always getting after me for not paying close enough attention to my purse when at the store-grocery especially-I've been lucky so far. I learned a trick somewhere and I do it all the time now-I wind the child seat belt in the basket around the strap of my purse and click it closed so it will be much harder to snatch it, and put my cloth chopping totes on top of my purse. Sorry this happened-and hope they catch the #$%@#$&*'s in the act of using them!

nycbgirl 12-17-2010 11:33 PM

Wow! The things people are doing to get our money! I also wind the seat belt throught the straps of my purse and put groceries on top of my purse when I shop. However it occured to me that thieves can steal the shopping cart too! Last week at Walmart I left the cart with groceries on the sidewalk and put some groceries in the trunk while doing this I noticed some youths walking by and looking to see what I bought and I thought for a minute they are going to run off with those bags. They didn't but I won't be surprised when things come to that. (good thing I'm dieting those carrots and broccoli weren't too tempting) Also as soon as I get to my car I open the trunk and put my purse in it towards the back. I have a friend who immediately locks her purse in the car as she loads the trunk. Stay safe!

nycbgirl 12-17-2010 11:37 PM

And one more thing, better to be safe than sorry. If I am uncomfortable for any reason I ask someone from the store to walk with me to my car so I am not alone. It's so easy to not listen to your instincts and push the warning aside but I don't do it anymore. Times are very hard and people are desperate.

Do NOT leave it in the trunk!... anyone can smash the window, hit the button for the trunk lift, and get your purse "hidden" there. ... and ESPECIALLY, do not put it in while in the pkg. lot... those jerks are just waiting at a short distance for the opportunity!!!!! and they probably work in gangs of two's or more!

Carry your cr. cards in tin foil... a pain in the neck to unwrap each time but needed in this sick society. Better yet... send the card back and ORDER the company to send one without those "scanning/bumping" RFID's.

What next????

TN Donna 12-17-2010 11:51 PM

So sorry this happened to you.

mzsooz 12-17-2010 11:51 PM

So sorry you have to go through this!

The thief who steals my credit cards has a shock coming! They are all maxed out. They could get maybe $6.00

luvstitches 12-18-2010 03:28 AM

I just changed my purse to a smaller one with a smaller opening because the one I had before would be wide open, thrown over my shoulder and could never tell if someone were to reach inside and pull out my wallet. It never happened but it was waiting for the day. I have a small wallet that doesn't hold my cc's. They are in another small zip top leather case in another section of my purse.
I'm so sorry you had to go thru this.

ladybug45 12-18-2010 04:37 AM

My dd had her purse stolen out of the cart in the parking lot. She had it in the cart while she was unloading her groceries into the trunk. They just drove by and lifted it out of the cart. Thank God her keys fell out on the ground. She called and put a hold on her phone and her husband went into the store and pulled out the cash that was in her bank account.

They spent about $300 at Kmart with the atm card. This card her picture on the front of it. She is very blond. These were men that used it and they weren't blond.

She didn't have to pay the $300. Had to get new bank acc. and new drivers license.

HisPatchwork 12-18-2010 05:38 AM

Sorry this happened, thanks for the reminder to be extra careful! I will be shopping the next few days.

JJs 12-18-2010 05:48 AM

if the cards were used in the wm where they were stolen - the transactions are on VIDEO and the police should be able to get that info and broadcast it on the nightly news - that's what happens here in Alabama!
Walmarts video EVERYTHING (don't do anything in wm that you don't want the world to see)... the store is on video, the registers are on video, the parking lot is on video...
and your theft is on video...
insist on the police getting that evidence

Ooh, good point. I wish I could order groceries and paper towels online! Yikes! I guess I will just leave the purse at home. What a pain!

I am sorry you had to go through this especially at this time of year.

Question: What is an RFID?
