The cat likes to eat... WHAT??

So.

DH has started feeding the cat dried prunes.

And she likes them.

??

He says that ever since he started feeding her prunes, she has become more affectionate.

????

Does anybody know if prunes are harmful for a kitty?

paulswalia 02-23-2012 06:09 PM

won't you have to clean out the litter box more often??????? Just askin'!!!!

ptquilts 02-23-2012 06:10 PM

Maybe she was irregular??

MaryStoaks 02-23-2012 06:19 PM

Prunes might help get rid of hair balls!:D

theoldgraymare 02-23-2012 06:36 PM

You might want to check with a vet on that one!

luvTooQuilt 02-23-2012 07:32 PM

My cat eats everything.. Shes a table scrap lover... I honestly believe she thinks shes a dog... whatever my dog eats she wants some too...

Lori S 02-23-2012 07:41 PM

Well thats a new one by me! I would give the vet a call... It's weird what can be dangerous to a pet. Like dogs shouldn't have grapes...

Kas 02-23-2012 07:50 PM

My mom had a cat that ate bananas and I had a cat that loved gin & tonics. We had to watch her when we had parties. Never heard of prunes, though.

Chasing Hawk 02-23-2012 10:39 PM

Kola likes cashews, chips, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, cheese.

She actually chased my husband around the kitchen to get a bite of his PB & J sandwich the other day.
She likes the juice from canned tuna and canned salmon. She doesn't like shrimp or kitty treats.

I found this list..........

think you will find prunes are ok for cats and dogs - can be used as a natural remedy to help if they have problems with the anal glands but would check to see the recommended amount for your cat as that depends on their weight

Good idea cause I know of some fruits, etc. that you shouldn't feed them.

miss_ticky2 02-24-2012 03:39 AM

We've got one that used to like tomatoes when she was younger. She'll also steal any bread off the table if we leave it there, even in a bag.

HollyDav 02-24-2012 04:40 AM

Funny what pets will eat/drink. My greyhound will try to get your black coffee. We can't leave it unattended on the coffee table. The last thing I need is greyhound jazzed up on caffeine!

Tink's Mom 02-24-2012 05:10 AM

Tink waits till I share my coffee with her in the morning...she will even woof me if she thinks I forgot to give her some...
The other day she started to stand up against my leg waiting for her coffee...I told her it was too hot, and she sat down to wait...crazy dog. All she gets is my finger dipped into my black coffee a couple of times and she licks it off.

crafty3236 02-24-2012 06:37 AM

recently our daughters cat (maine coon)we had olives that were stuffed with garlic , he came over to the small bowl I had them in, an started licking the juice, then he decided to roll his head in it , thats when we took it away,he also knows what the pressure cooker is, likes to eat whatever comes out, and he will let you know he wants it..

ShowMama 02-24-2012 07:52 AM

We had a cat years ago who loved vegetables. She would eat peas, green beans, corn, carrots, just about any vegetable. And her favorite of all was iceberg lettuce! She loved it. We even tested her once.....held out a piece of meat and a piece of lettuce. Yep, she took the lettuce! Weirdest cat I ever had.

I also had a dog who liked raw carrots and dewberries.

Peckish 02-24-2012 08:03 AM

When I was a child, we had a toy poodle who would ignore the apples that had fallen off the tree, instead he'd stand on his hind legs and walk under the tree, inspecting every hanging apple until he found one suitable. Then he'd pick it and eat it.

I would check with the vet about the fruit, just to be safe. I know dogs can't have grapes, and I'm wondering if grapes are related to prunes - they're both pitted fruit, sort of. Lol.

sewmom 02-24-2012 08:28 AM

We had a cat that would roll around on the floor if there was a green olive on it. Then she would chew on the celery leaves when I'd bring in the groceries. I thought maybe catnip and celery were similar? Another cat would eat mushrooms from casseroles. My DDhated mushrooms so she would feed them to him. He once knocked a Cheezit out of my hand so it would fall on the floor so he could have it. He also would eat animal crackers, but only the cat shaped ones! Too funny!

Stitchnripper 02-24-2012 10:12 AM

Cute stories. One of our cats loved the "innards" from cantaloupe. She just couldn't wait for us to put it down for her. It never seemed to have any adverse effects. She didn't like cantaloupe pieces, just the part with the seeds. Go figure.

Sheila_H 02-24-2012 10:32 AM

I would check with the vet too, I know with dogs some things that can be extremely harmful to them is if they eat grapes or anything with garlic on it.
My grandmother God rest her soul used to feed her cat a can of crab meat everyday and then was shocked to find out the cat had diabetes, needless to say the Vet was every alarmed to find out what she was feeding the cat, lol We lived in a fishing community and a friend of the family had brought over a big garbage bag full of crab legs, she boiled them and fed them to the cat he was mortified.

kayluvs2quilt 02-24-2012 10:33 AM

My beloved Ziggy went crazy for cantaloupe...he could smell one coming in from the grocery store. He's over the rainbow bridge now but I still have his ashes and want them spread with me when I'm gone.

crtwelvecats 02-24-2012 02:01 PM

i have a tabby that we have to leave some corn on the cob for and also if i boil it he wants the corn water. his mom loved corn too and peas but the peas were only when she was pregnant with him.she also liked donuts. our junior loved ice cubes to play with and wouldn't stay out of our tea so we had to use covered cups if we wanted to drink any. the other day the tabby decided he likes tortillas. so guess it is strange what they will decide to eat sometime, lol

Jingle 02-24-2012 05:53 PM

Years ago I had a female cat that loved powdered donuts and glazed donuts, would eat them through a plastic bag. I had a male at the same time that loved pumpkin pie.
One of the cats I have now, Herbie, orange and white, use to eat biscuits, when we had leftovers, would eat through the baggie.
Years ago my first toy poodle would eat anything my oldest Daughter would eat, she always saved her a tiny piece. She loved to eat plain ice cubes also.

mcdaniel023 02-25-2012 04:10 AM

Last night Katie (our spoiled rotten, thinks she's a dog cat) came running when my dh opened a bag of sour cream and onion chips. She even sat up an begged. I couldn't stop laughing. I sure wish I had a picture.

catsnchina 02-25-2012 05:57 AM

We have one cat who eats avocados and loves cheese. He only gets little nibbles of them now and then, but he always checks out any green veggies to see if they might be avocados.

ptquilts 02-25-2012 06:52 AM

my cat also liked corn on the cob, as well as rye bread and winter squash skins (caught him trying to get them out of the chickens' pen!!)

check out this cat!!

Peach would kill for a shrimp...cannot have that on a buffet at home unless he is caged!!!!

mommaB 02-25-2012 08:06 AM

Had a cat that loved BBQ potato chips and another one that would rip open a bag to get at cinnamon rolls! The dog ate banannas peels stems and all ..and crayons by the boxful!! that was fun to clean up in the yard!! quite colorful. The only thing that dog wouldn't steal was jello!

annasgirl 02-25-2012 08:40 AM

Interesting! Mine likes marshmallows, coconut and Cheez It's (the swiss cheese flavor)! And the expensive It

BarbaraSue 02-25-2012 12:29 PM

Powdered Sugar Donuts! Every animal I have had loved them. Maybe because I do, but don't eat them anymore.
Two cats, littermates, we had would come running with the donut bag was rattled, not the can opener!! :D

karate lady 02-25-2012 12:35 PM

Had a siamese named Suki who loved to eat cantaloupe. would sit and watch me cut it up and then ask for her share.

DaylilyDawn 02-25-2012 01:23 PM

Our pups, Gunner's Coal and Sugarfoot both like to eat squash . Coal like tangerine and cucumber too. Sugarfoot will eat tomatoes but doesn't like dressing on it.

burchquilts 02-25-2012 02:25 PM

I know dogs aren't supposed to have raisins... look around on the web & it should tell you.

Hey, has anyone else noticed that now they advertise prunes as "dried plums" instead of "prunes"? Guess "prunes" conjures thought of being old. What-ever... I've always LOVED prunes. When I little, my dad would "bribe" me with them. OK, I'm weird... LOL!

some foods are bad for cats and dogs. they can overdose on them easily. do ck with your Vet. probably all right but ck to be sure.

coopah 02-25-2012 05:41 PM

Don't know about the prunes. One of our cats liked peppermint sticks and pizza sauce, another liked lettuce and green peas, and the current cat likes chocolate (I know she shouldn't have it...so she just has an itty bit rarely), Cheeze Its and potato chips! Strange!

My Maine coon mix favorite people treat is fruit loops and frosted flakes. I couldn't put my son's cereal in the bowl before going to wake him up because we'd always find her sitting on the table munching away! But only the sweetened cereals thank you. Since he's grown and out of the house I buy her those individual little boxes every once in a while. Oh, and white bread. We can't leave a loaf of bread out because she'll shred the wrapper getting to the bread. She only eats a little bit but you're guaranteed stale bread by morning! Don't we love our fur babies :D

Marge L. 02-26-2012 01:19 PM

My son had a cat that ate dill pickles. Wouldn't believe it until I saw it.

Yvie 02-27-2012 03:57 PM

My cat Archie just loves Broccoli, he'll do anything for it. He turns his nose up at meat and fish in favour of the broccoli. I even have to keep an eye on him when I cook it as he has, on more than one occassion blistered his paws by standing on the hob trying to get the broccoli out the pan.

Actually he also has a horrible habit of trying to dive into the (tiny) tub of honey and walnut youghurt when I open it, he gets all very excited - its the only flavour he is remotely interested in and I used to find it quite cute but unfortunately I've ended up wearing the youghurt too many times to still find it quite so cute :)

I once was owned by a cat who do anything for chocolate chips cookies or the Frito Scoops. Do they still have them? He didn't ant any Frito other than the scoop kind and I never did figure out how he knew the difference brtween the different kinds.

I have also had a Husky/Malamute mix that one Christmas Eve ate 2 packs of Marlboor cigarettes, 2 - 3 glass ornaments and a huge chrysanthemum plant plus a 2 pound box of choclates and lived to a ripe old age. We were naturally alarmed when we found the destruction and called the vet who said either he'll pass or the garbage will and said there was nothing he could do to help the dog. He was about 3 months old at the time. He did live without any harm at all to him and the vet recommended that we not feed him that combination again as it really should have been fatal to any dog let alone a puppy.
