Childhood Treats
I made my ultimate childhood breakfast treat this morning (other than eating dessert).
Cinnamon toast. What was yours? |
One of my favorite childhood treats was called Junket. It was sort of like pudding but much lighter. Came in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. It was in little boxes and you mixed it with milk. Anyone else heard of this? Do they still make it? Wonder if I'd still like it--yep! Anything chocolate I'd like LOL.
My mom babysat a bunch of kids. For snack sometimes she would give us celery with peanut-butter.

Cinnamon toast was a rainy day favourite treat in our house when we were kids too. Another one was a dippy poached egg with toast soldiers.
I love Cinnamon toast! The other day I had some Hawaiian punch , had not had it in decades... once in a while when I was a kid we got one of the big cans , and would all sit down on a Saturday night for a movie on TV with a big glass of Hawaiian Punch. and maybe some popcorn. That was big living !
My favorite to this day is Onion dip and potato chips. My mom used to send us to the hayloft in the barn on rainy days with this treat. I love the smell of hay, rain and patter of rain on the tin roof. Now that I'm older, I realize it was survival for her to send 4 kids out to the barn from the house. But it seemed like such a treat then.
Buttered toast dipped into chocolate milk. And root beer from the root beer stand.
It was a treat for us to get a sugar cube to suck on!
Dream Whip, a powder that made a mousse-like dessert. Merri-Mints, only came out at parties and we were only allowed a couple of them.
Does anyone remember Zarex - syrup that came in a glass bottle and made something like Kool-aid. |

Look above the puddings where they usually put the unusual stuff. I always liked Devil Dogs which 50 years ago were great and nothing like the pitiful thing they called a Devil Dog in recent years. |
i don't remember zarex, but all of the others are familiar. my all time favorite, even today, is cinnamon toast.
Tea cakes. My grandmother made tea cakes instead of cookies. They were big, light and fluffy, and golden brown with crispy edges. They was always a plate full under her cake dome.
I don't have her recipe (she never used one) but I have her cake dome. |
to JanRN, go to www.junketdesserts.com and take a look at their products. Just the box brought back memories. You can buy Junket in several flavors and it looks like a fun website to explore. I never cared for it and it seems my mother made it a few times a week. But by mentioning it you just gave me a happy jolt of childhood.
I remember Junket, toast soldiers, Dream Whip and Merri-Mints.
I loved Fizzies, (a tablet you dropped in water to make a drink). Space Food Sticks were another favorite. |
Alas, I'm allergic to cinnamon. My DH loves it though. My favorite childhood treat was popcorn with an apple on the side. Usually it was either one or the other. I especially liked oranges. Mom would cut three oranges in half and give one half to each of the six children. That made a bag of oranges last longer. :):):)

Cinnamon toast hands down. My mother was generous with the brown sugar.
among my late mom's recipe cards is one for cinnamon toast topping, with a bit of cocoa added. Never tried it but it sounds good.
I make the mousse that calls for Dream Whip - only now I use an 8 oz container of Cool Whip! Tastes just as good. Also, in the junket section -- We had Danish Junket (Dessert) - loved it. I think they still make it. Raspberry with a dollop of Cool Whip - Sheer Ambrosia. I also liked sliced radishes and Miracle Whip sandwiches after a day at the beach!
And for those that live in the areas - WHITE CASTLES! I remember when they were 8 cents and then 12 cents and over the past 60 years, the price went up and now they are 43 cents - Gut Bombs, Sliders. My dad loved them. Said they were invented by a guy who put a little liver in the hamburger to make it healthy for children during the war when there was rationing (I remember that) . Whatever he did, we love 'em!!!!! Hot cocoa and buttered toast; pancakes buttered and milk and sugar on top. I could go on and on! But I never did particularly care for S'mores! Edie |
I stayed with a neighbor while my parents went to work. She would let me put any color food coloring in my breakfast cream of wheat ! I always chose blue.
I was at a friend's house one day and she asked if I wanted some peanut butter. I thought she meant a pb sandwich. No, she took a wax paper sandwich bag, put her hand inside and smeared it with pb. She handed me a bag and I thought she had lost her mind. We licked pb off our bags all afternoon. Best invention ever. No bread to get in the way & fill you up.lol

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches. The best to make you feel better. Also graham crackers and hot milk tea with my grandmother.
Scraps of pie crust sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and baked...YUM!

I have never seen the any other flavors than Strawberry or raspberry. It is not at all like jello but more like a clear pudding but oh, so rich with flavor! |

Yes, they still make it. You can find in some stores with the pudding mixes. |
If I have a bowl of cereal, I like a really hot piece of buttered toast an dip it into the milk and cereal. I don't put a lot of milk on my cereal but DH does so he can drink the leftover milk right out of the bowl. He did this in front of our nephews little kids once. There eyes got so big. Their dad put their left over milk into a small cup till they got bigger and were able to drink from the bowl. Cinnamon toast sounds good right now!
Believe it or not, Junket is still sold in my area.
On very special days for dessert we would get ice cream cones (flat bottom ones) filled with fruit cocktail. We always thought we'd died and gone to heaven. The other special treat was fried home made bread. It was the best.
love cinnamon toast!
Peanut butter toast was my favorite as a child. It still is today.
I still love cinnamon toast! It used to be my all time favorite breakfast although we mostly ate cold cereal. I still have it from time to time, but since I'm supposedly on a no bread diet I don't get it nearly as often as I'd like to.
My grandmother use to make me an after school snack of a piece of white bread spread with butter with cinnamon sugar. MMM
milk toast
It was melba toast (I think) made with hot milk and served with butter and sugar. Mom only fed it to me when I was sick. (Sounds kind of yucky today,, but then it was a treat.) |
My favorite childhood treat was always a hot bowl of Zoom. Zoom is made by a local company (Krusteaz) and made from rolled wheat instead of rolled oats like you are probably more familiar. A pinch of cinnamon and a dust of nutmeg, milk and sugar. Yumm! I still have it for breakfast at least once or twice a month. Zoom is also what I use when making crisps instead of oatmeal, much more nutty flavor than oats in the same recipe.
I remember Zarex and Fizzies. I loved Bonamo Taffy. A treat for us kids was to eat at Grandma's house because she had butter and real maple syrup!
Our favorite breakfast food was peanut butter-jelly on toast with a big cup of hot chocolate.

Cinnamon toast has to be my favorite too.
