Christmas Cactus in Bloom

1 Attachment(s)
My cactus has been in bloom for a couple wks. It was started from a pink cactus, then a start from a red one.

QuiltnNan 11-17-2011 03:59 AM

Thanks for sharing that picture. I love Christmas cactus. Your red one is especially pretty with it's reddish 'stems'. I'm always thinking fondly of the one my DMIL grew in her foyer. The light must have been perfect there because it was HUGE.

Thanks for reminding me that somewhere in the sewing room is a box with a large paper pieced quilt of the christmas cactus. I should start that someday soon before I totally forget it. Maybe I need to print of a picture of it to hang where I can see it. Out of sight, out of mind LOL.

I started calling mine "Thanksgiving Cactus" because they seem to always bloom in November and are usually finished before Christmas! Two of mine are in bloom - red and pink - and the white one is about ready to burst into bloom. Love them.

quiltinggirl 11-17-2011 05:13 AM

Beautiful!!

Opal Jane 11-17-2011 05:15 AM

Very pretty.....

Joset 11-17-2011 05:26 AM

My two are really blooming too. they are so pretty. wish they would last a long time.

ShowMama 11-17-2011 06:19 AM

That is beautiful! I love Christmas cactus and have two white ones I bought last Christmas. They both have actually survived all this time, in spite of my "black thumb". Just the other day I noticed they are starting to make buds, so hopefully they'll be blooming in time for Christmas.
Thanks for sharing.

lovingmama 11-17-2011 06:23 AM

Thanks for sharing your joy!

erstan947 11-17-2011 06:58 AM

Beautiful. Thanks for the bright spot for me this morning:)

Jingle 11-17-2011 09:41 AM

Very pretty, I grew them years ago, now just Regular Cacti and bonsai. I have had regular cacti for about 38 or 40 yrs. still growing.

Yours is so pretty! I have one but it hasn't bloomed yet. It's from a cutting that was over 100 years old! The orgininal is huge and has hundreds of blooms. It belongs to my friend whose great grandmother got a cutting from a friend when she was first married! Here is a picture of mine.

Last year my Christmas catcus was in great bloom which lasted until Mother's Day. After the last blossoms dropped I did a deep pruning and it's spent the last few months expending its energy growing tons of new shoots. I do not think it will bloom this year but I'm betting next Christmas it will look beautiful! I can only hope. :)

Ducky 11-17-2011 12:26 PM

Very pretty! Do you always have it by that window? Is it an East or South facing window?

MissDaisyDo 11-17-2011 12:33 PM

I bought one yesterday at Lowes that is sort of an apricot color. I had never seen one that color before. I'm hoping to use it as a hostess gift for a Christmas Eve open house. It is just starting to bloom and has lots of buds. We left it in the enclosed garage hoping that since it is cooler and it would have less light that maybe that would slow down it's blooming. If not, and it's all bloomed out by Christmas, I guess it will become mine.

Quiltinggma-nc 11-17-2011 12:37 PM

Love your Christmas Cactus. Mine has just started to bloom.

QuiltnLady1 11-17-2011 12:41 PM

Love yours -- mine has not yet put out buds (it usually blooms after Christmas).

plainpat 11-17-2011 02:01 PM

The window faces SE.The cactus spends the summer in a north facing flower garden, then comes inside once temps start to get pretty cold at night.Always sits on same table.
DH's Grmother had one that grew in a bushel basket size pottery vase.Had double red flowers & was a sight to see. Hers was on a north facing enclosed porch.Too big to be moved.

Beautiful ! Wish mine looked like yours !!

nativetexan 11-17-2011 03:33 PM

oh i have one but it hasn't bloomed in two years. i forget to give it water and it must need more than it's getting.

decky 11-17-2011 03:39 PM

Mine is loaded with buds it usually has flowers for thanksgiving and will keep blooming until the end of Jan. Mine is a little larger than yours. I can't get my arms around it, it is huge!!! The stems in the base are like small trees. I have had it for over 17 years and keep it in a east window.

Tink's Mom 11-17-2011 03:43 PM

That is really cool!

Funny thing is that I just bought one yesterday for my Aunt...My Uncle had a green thumb and used to grow all sorts of things...he had a bunch of these Christmas Cactus in all colors that he had for years...when he started to fail...all of his plants died. I thought this might be a little memory for her...

QuiltingNinaSue 11-17-2011 04:07 PM

Beautifiul. Thanks sharing the picture, and bringing back all our wonderful memories of Christmas cactus that we have known. Now who can put one in a block on a quilt??? Bet it would be an eye catcher.

Sheila_H 11-17-2011 04:58 PM

Beautiful I was looking at them on the weekend last week, I really need to pick one up this week I love them, plus my MIL always had one at her place I'd like to get one to remember her by.

MinnieKat 11-17-2011 05:29 PM

Gorgeous!! Mine had one lonely blossom ... it had never blossomed before and I was so excited!

2manyprojects 11-18-2011 04:32 AM

Mine too, and I just visited a friend and theirs is too, not sure why, mine always blooms closer to Christmas!

plainpat 11-18-2011 05:09 AM

Have enjoyed hearing about all the Christmas cactus you have.I know you're supposed to keep them in a very dark space for a while before they will bloom.Haven't done that, maybe next yr.BTW,the flower shop has an orange one & just have to have that color, tho I will keep looking.Flower shop is too $$ for me.

mummadee 11-18-2011 05:16 AM

One of mine is blooming too, the red one. I think the position of where it is kept is the key. I have 3 more from the same batch and only one is blooming. That one was in my office and got complete darkeness at night. I think that that means something??

annthreecats 11-18-2011 06:02 AM

Nice plant.

I have a CC on my desk at work, but I didn't do the necessary prep to get it to bloom, so I don't think I will see flowers this year.

MrsM 11-18-2011 06:26 AM

Mine are blooming too along with my violet. It makes me happy to see them in bloom. Thanks for sharing yours.

sueisallaboutquilts 11-18-2011 06:30 AM

That's so pretty!!!!!!
I have one that belonged to my husband's grandmother and she's been gone for many years- This past summer I kept it outside in the shade and now it looks nice and healthy again :)

Caswews 11-18-2011 07:12 AM

I think I killed mine ..sigh .. I left it outside all summer and it loved it, then one night it rained here and I forgot to bring it in and it looks like it got really cold that night and it looks like the cactus froze.. UGH !! so I guess I will start again and try try again .. LOL some of the plants survived but some look terrible (they are all in one pot !)

BarbaraSue 11-18-2011 07:30 AM

Mine is red also and is in bloom. My "Christmas" cactus is anything but in bloom for Christmas. It blooms at Easter every two years, then Thanksgiving in between.

amyjo 11-18-2011 08:17 AM

I got several of them from my mom and now one that never bloomed in about 4 years is getting blooms on it. I wonder if my Mom had something to do with it. she is in heaven now I know looking down for the past 2 1/2 weeks.

blueangel 11-18-2011 08:24 AM

That is beautiful Mine are just now starting to bloom.

IdahoSandy 11-18-2011 09:23 AM

I like your x-mas cactus. It looks like you have two cactus, one pink and one red. I have a red one that is 3 ft across and one bloom has just opened. Mine is on the east side of apt., so only gets morning sun. I cut it back last spring, but it has a mind of it's own and is now as big as it was before I pruned it. Can not tell you how many starts I have given to friends whom viewed it.

Linda - K. 11-18-2011 09:58 AM

I used to have some of them in almost every color I could find. That was in the 70s when house plants were everyone's passion it seemed. I had over 100 house plants but it got to be too much work and when my son was born, I got rid of all of them cause he was enough work!!

kathy6696 11-18-2011 03:25 PM

Beautiful, I have been thinking of buying one

carhop 11-18-2011 03:56 PM

I love them mine finally got too old and died

Dakota Girl 11-19-2011 07:58 AM

I also have many Christmas/Thanksgiving cactus plants......all in full bloom. I even have a gold one.

My mother in law had a huge Christmas Cactus (pink) in Washington state, when she passed away I brought part of it back to Ohio. By the time we had reached my home in North Dakota, it was looking pretty bad. I left it with my mother until the next summer. It had been nursed back to health by then. We brought it back to Ohio, I have lost count of all of the plants started from it over the years. Always a wonderful memory when I look at it.
