I remember all this, right down to washing the line before using it! And did you play badminton over the lines when not in use? :)
I hung out laundry for years when we first married. Then we moved to the other side of the city, used the clothesline one summer, and then came down with asthma. Wouldnt dream of using a clothesline outside now.
Remember 'touching' the fabric from the unmentionables and getting the shivers when it was cold out? LOL

Apart from hanging pants from the bottoms, I probably still do everything else listed without even thinking about it. Having weather that is pretty good all year round means that using a clothes dryer is a seldom event in this neck of the woods.

I still hang out on the line...and I live in a big city. We have been in the same house for 30 years...when we first moved in, it was a Sunday and I was hanging out some clothes and a neighbor was driving down the alley...honks her horn and yells out the window..."Don't you know better? You don't hang out laundry on Sundays"...
I was stunned but yelled back " you do if the dryer is broke".
She was in her late 60's, I was in my early 20's. We became good friends and laughed over it many times.

I have a neighbor who "borrows" my clothes line occasionally. I have hung out bedding and such since I retired but recently while wiping off the glass table top on the porch preparatory to eating lunch there I realized that all that nasty pollen was in the air and no wonder I was all plugged up every morning. I love the smell of percale sheets hung out but since I have to sleep with a CPAP there's not much point to that. I've traded that in for being able to breath when I get up.

Remember hanging out the gauze diapers? They got stained and looked bad because I didn't use bleach on them. DDs had no diaper rash. When I tried diaper service they looked nicer but one DD's behind was raw. That ultra violet light much have killed off the nasty bacteria that caused that.

Washing in our house was done on Saturday's at least the 5 kids cause that was my job. Wash and rinse in the wringer washer and hang out to dry. No didn't matter how cold it was. My grandmother refused to get a washer and dryer because she said the washers used too much water and the dryers to much electricity. As soon as I moved out they got a washer and dryer. I guess they stopped using so much water and electricity. lol
I do love the smell of sheets hung on a line though. A lot of places don't allow clothes lines now. Shame

I have no dryer to use but living here, we have ample sunshine all year long. Though sometimes, I do say, "my kingdom for a dryer!!!"

We have a long coverd deck, and my DH strung clothsline up for me, so I can hang my cloths when ever I want.. rain or shine! (but not if it's too windy! lol) I even clean the lines with a damp cloth.

Brings back memories for sure! But I agree with Jingle & Annette...wouldn't give up my washer & dryer for anything...not even free fabric!!

I do remember these "Clothesline musts." Mom was a stickler for doing it right! She could have written these rules Ditter. LOL I do use a line ever now & then. With pollen allergies I have to be careful. Thank You for this topic.
