Coloring

Have any of you caught the Adult Coloring Book bug? I have and now I have 2 obsessions, quilting
and coloring. So much fun!!

Quilty-Louise 04-17-2016 11:02 AM

My daughter requested some of these coloring books for her
birthday last November. So I bought her about 10 books and
a 50 color pack of colored pencils and a 50 color set of markers.

After getting her all those I decided I needed some for myself.

LOL I even found a "Cats & Quilts" adult coloring book on Amazon.

Funny you should ask. I'm just taking a break from coloring to check the forum. As usual, I'm caught up in a frenzy of obtaining supplies for this latest obsession. Let's see. There's knitting, scrapbooking, quilting, now coloring. I'll have plenty to keep me occupied in my retirement.

ManiacQuilter2 04-17-2016 11:28 AM

No, it doesn't interest me as much as quilting does.

Angellight 04-17-2016 04:23 PM

After having some health issues due to stress, I purchased a couple of books. I already had the pencils to use for quilting when I am drafting patterns. My problem is that while I NEVER feel like this when I am crafting, I feel like I am not productively using my time when I color. I've had the books for over a year and have only done a couple of pages.

Happy day!
Susan

I got my mom one book in January, she now has 7 books. it's addicting I hear.

Yes, I caught the bug too:) Have been collecting books, and I have one that's quilt patterns and a couple books of cats.

Coloring bug

Yes - I'm guilty also. So now I quilt, color, read, garden and sometimes cook, clean, etc.

coopah 04-18-2016 05:06 AM

I colored so much as a kid, I really don't want to return to it. The books, though, have amazing designs. I bought a book and colored pencils for my SIL who is caring for a mother who has Alzheimer's. I think it will be a calming activity if she chooses to try it. It's a great activity. She doesn't quilt and is done with embroidery for awhile, so I'm hoping this will help.

I caught the coloring bug too. I have several coloring books next to the recliner in the living room. Along with tons of colored pencils and gel pens. Since I can't sit at my sewing machine, I sit and color for a bit each day.

DonnaC 04-18-2016 05:37 AM

Yes, I've caught the bug too. I also have an awesome coloring book app on my Kindle that I use all the time. It's simply called "Coloring" and it was free; lots of really nice designs in the app, and the update it regularly with new ones.

When I was teaching special ed, we would color with the students to model how to hold a crayon, use more than one color, etc. My aides and I would often comment that we were getting paid to have fun coloring! Our secret has been found out! I think I'll get a coloring book to take on our road trip in a couple of months.

Sometimes at night when I can't sleep for worrying about my DH, I get up and go to my sewing room and color. Since I am concerned about my DH's condition and prognosis, I can't really concentrate on quilting and piecing, so I just color for a while until I am once again ready to go to bed to toss and turn. It is a wonderful time consumer. So glad I am coloring instead of fretting.

Just stopped by my moms house, she now has about 200 coloring pencils, all that the stores have and just got her 10th coloring book. she's hooked. Keeps a 80 yr old woman off the streets and out of the stores. Unless of course, they come out with a new book. To bad Michaels doesn't take coupons on them.

I paint and quilt so I don't have much time to color. I bought some for my DGD who loves to draw for Christmas. She is a busy teen so I don't know if she has had much time for it but she was thrilled to get them.

MargeD 04-18-2016 11:06 AM

Last Sept. I was in Rehab after taking a serious of falls and I was really bored. I had asked my DH for a coloring book and he brought me in a Creative Cats coloring book (I love cats) along with a set of 50 colored pencils and he surprised me by giving them to me on my birthday. It really helped keep me from going nutty, and for Christmas our DGD and DDIL bought me two different coloring books. Occasionally, when Zoe comes over, Zoe will ask Grandma MiMi to color, so we usually color something while she's here. Lately I have been doing more quilting than coloring, but it's there when I want to color, especially if the quilting starts bothering my left arm. I have to pace myself as I'm looking forward (not really) to having that shoulder replaced when it gets too bad, so then I can have a matched set, as I had my right shoulder replaced just a year ago and I'm doing great, especially without all the pain of a badly torn rotator cuff.

I haven't even been tempted (yet!). My daughter's into it, which strikes me as funny because she really didn't like coloring when she was little. I think it's wonderful for those who enjoy it for relaxation, kind of mindless fun like me playing my iPad games.

Wanabee Quiltin 04-18-2016 11:58 AM

I have absolutely no desire to color. If I have time, I quilt.

karensue 04-18-2016 12:34 PM

I have looked at these coloring books often since just about every type of store carries them.
I wanted to get one for my 86 year old mom but the designs are so intense, I would rather have less tiny areas to color.
What are your opinions?

Bren 04-18-2016 06:39 PM

Looks very interesting, but I have avoided so far. I have all the "time-suckers" I can handle right now!

I found some at Dollar Tree that have several designs with large spaces. For only $1 it would become worth a try.

madamekelly 04-19-2016 12:22 AM

Yes, I have been bit by the coloring bug. Having an inquisitive 3 year old living here now, makes me reluctant to use my rotary cutter or even let her know it exists. She has a bad case of "I want to do what Nana ( me) does." I found a wonderful thick "Paisleys" coloring book at Michaels. I have been working with felt pens, but DH just got me colored pencils, so I will try that next. I might even have to break out the box of 120 crayons he got me for designing quilts to try.

tkhooper 04-19-2016 03:43 AM

I scan them into the computer boot up the paint program and go to work. This way if my color choice isn't, "all that" I can try again. And any I like I can print out. I hate to write in any book even a coloring book. Crazy right?

pal 04-19-2016 04:06 AM

I got some to trace and then embroider and appliqué. The book I got is Scandinavian and is all scenes. Love it!

DonnaC 04-19-2016 06:07 AM

karensue, you might also want to check Wal-Mart. I saw some coloring books there which had larger designs. I think they were near the toy department, as opposed to the regular book area. I thought the pages were really nice and would be easy for someone with less dexterity.

Sandygirl 04-20-2016 01:57 AM

I did not color well in school. Nothing has changed. But the coloring books for adults are amazing in detail. They have been suggested for memory care patients, btw. I can understand offering them to the homebound and assisted living and nursing home patients who are able to do so. Neat!

When I was small I got in trouble with my Arabian nights coloring book. I was coloring Scheherazade's lips with of course a beautiful red crayon & I was pressing down hard & over and over to make her lips really shiny like real lipstick. I got in trouble because I was 'wasting' my crayon by pressing too much. I guess 5 kids under the age of 10 put a big dent in the crayon budget...lol. I would color again, if I didn't have a zillion other things to do as well - learning quilting, papercutting, making a slipcover & skirt - pulling weeds!

quiltin-nannie 04-20-2016 03:46 AM

I bought my adult daughter coloring books and pencils for Christmas. She finds it very relaxing from her high pressure job (Needs assessment counselor for mental health patients in crisis). I decided yesterday it might help release some of my stress so went to JoAnn's and ended up purchasing the same books for me that I had purchased for her! I must have really like those two books!

deedum 04-20-2016 03:57 AM

I buy mine at the dollar tree. I buy alot when I find them. They may great gifts for people who are ill or laid up.

Onebyone 04-20-2016 04:07 AM

I bought one and colored about 1/8 of one page. I lost interest really fast. I guess it's not for me.
