comfy shoes?

I will be doing a lot of walking in Washington, D.C.
What shoes would you recommend? I need something comfortable, light weight, and cool.
Thanks for your input.

donnalynett 05-24-2012 07:03 PM

I wear nothing but Morrells anymore.

Monika 05-24-2012 07:04 PM

I like SAS.

Me, too! SAS all the way. I have lace ups, sandals and flip flops. I love them all and could walk miles in any of them.

DogHouseMom 05-24-2012 07:11 PM

you might also want to look into just getting gel inserts for the shoes that you have. I've not worn them myself, but a friend swears by them when at dog shows and standing around on concrete all day. I've just been too lazy to pick them up :)

qbquilts 05-24-2012 07:16 PM

If it were me, I'd wear a good pair of tennis shoes that have already been broken in. Something along the lines of Reebok, Adidas, Nike, New Balance, etc. - generally not the cheap "non-name brand" ones sold at Walmart, Kmart, etc.

mrsponcho1 05-24-2012 07:18 PM

I wear New Balance 846. It is a light weight athletic shoe and very comfortable.

NikkiLu 05-24-2012 07:19 PM

Clarks sandals are very good. A good tennis shoe for me is Dr. Scholls sold at WalMart for $25 - but not too cool though.

Connie M. 05-24-2012 07:29 PM

I really like KEEN shoes. The washable sandals are great and also comfortable and cool. The great part is your toes are protected and covered. You can actually wear socks in them if you want. I wore KEENs walking all day at Disneyworld and they were great. Whatever shoes you get, be sure to break them in good before you go.

Sew N Tune 05-25-2012 04:57 AM

Crocs, has some nice new sandals.

vtretire 05-25-2012 05:32 AM

I like SAS also. Just bought Easy Spirit canvas walking shoes to wear to the big quilt show in MN next month. Very light and comfortable right out of the box. Being canvas they should let my feet "breathe" also. Enjoy your touring.

Clark and Ecco are foot doctor recommended. I wear their sandals year round here in FL after having foot surgery on both feet. Their expensive shoes, but last a long time. Enjoy your trip!

barny 05-25-2012 06:07 AM

I've had implants, so I wear New Balance. They look awful, but comfortable. That's the name of the game for me.

Phyllis nm 05-25-2012 11:15 AM

I started wearing these in 2000. I have tennis shoes, sandles and clogs. If I can can’t wear them—I don’t want to go!
Then I found Sloggers a form of clogs, but much softer with arch supports. But they stopped making them!

Pam B 05-25-2012 12:07 PM

Maybe a pair of Toms? They are comfy, yet stylish. Or maybe a nice pair of Easy Spirit tennis shoes.

quilter1 05-25-2012 12:14 PM

My DH and I went to Israel last year and I bought new Ecco running shoes for the trip. My feet never hurt after walking everywhere. They were expensive but worth it. I also like Clarks sandals for bare feet.

drgranny 05-25-2012 12:20 PM

I have a pair of berkenstock sandles and a pr. of berk clogs that I wear any time we are going to have to walk. These same two prs have served me for about 20 years. I wear the clogs in winter and the sandles in summer. My feet haven't hurt since I started wearing berkenstocks.

mhansen6 05-25-2012 12:23 PM

Ecco. These shoes are great. So light you don't know you have them on.

Niki walking shoes are great too.

Jim's Gem 05-25-2012 01:15 PM

SAS or my Brooks Arial's. I have bad feet and these are the only things I can wear comfortably.

Susan G. 05-25-2012 01:53 PM

I wear berkenstock shoes. I have for about 7 years. They are wonderful, my feet haven't hurt since I started wearing them. I wear them every day, I stand 8-10 hrs a day on concrete floors and have no problems with my feet. They are a bit pricey but well worth the money.

Elise1 05-25-2012 03:52 PM

SAS sandals for me. I have worn them for years and still find them to be the most comfortable shoes.

Quilty_Linda 05-25-2012 04:01 PM

Easy Spirit Travel time. Warning-pricy and habit forming. I now have them in many colors.

canmitch1971 05-25-2012 04:54 PM

Another vote for Keens....they are so comfortable...

maryb119 05-25-2012 05:20 PM

Wear something with a thick sole. The pavement is very hot. Yes you will do a lot of walking in Washington DC. It is worth the trip to see everything there. There is something new to see everytime I'm there.

sassey 05-25-2012 07:33 PM

I just recently purchased shoes called ortho heel they come in many diffrent styles after you wear them a day or two you will not want to wear anything else my feet and legs no longer hurt me a bit pricy but well worth it

sewnsewer2 05-25-2012 07:40 PM

I'm a Birkenstock girl. I get mine from either HSN or QVC.

glorcour 05-26-2012 05:07 AM

I have been wearing Birks for over 25 years and they are the best for me. I use the three stap style because it fits me better and I always try to buy a new pair when they are on sale. Alternately I will wear a good pair of athletic shoes like Reeboks or Rockports. A lot depends on where and what the climate is like.

KarenR 05-26-2012 05:14 AM

Heflinger are the ones for me.

fmhall2 05-26-2012 07:10 AM

I'm surprised no one has mentioned RIKA shoes. I got a pair off QVC recently, and love them. I have very temperamental feet, and yet I didn't have to break them in at all. Until I got them, I wore only SAS and Clarks 100% of the time. RIKA's are supposed to have been made for a woman's foot, not just adjusting a man's shoe into a women's shoe.

yesteryearshome 05-26-2012 07:20 AM

I highly recommend the Clarks wave technology soles. I am on my feet walking on hard concrete all day. They feel like somebody is giving you a little push along.

patchsamkim 05-26-2012 07:34 AM

Just about every pair of shoes I have bought over the last few years have been Sketchers...they always feel good on
my feet from the minute I try them on.

Stitchnripper 05-26-2012 07:45 AM

Well, I wear all of the above except Ecco and Keen. If they fit properly and are cushioned I think any of them would be good. I can walk in all of mine. BTW, my grandchildren wear Keens and they like them, but without socks even their feet stink to high heaven! Only in the Keens!

mrs. fitz 05-26-2012 08:19 AM

Check out Easy Spirit Traveltime series, they come in lots of colors. I think they're classified as clogs and I didn't think I could wear them. A friend who runs a dance studio and is on her feet all day said they're the most comfortable shoes in the world so, having bad feet, I tried a pair. She's right. I've been able to walk long distances, even a large quilt show, in complete comfort. I now own several pairs and want to get some summer designs. I just got an email that they're having a sale this weekend so if you go to www.easyspirit.com you can take a look, costs nothing just to see.

Rina 05-26-2012 09:42 AM

Crocks is very comfortable. Take a look at their website.

DanaNVa 05-26-2012 09:56 AM

I work in DC. Sneakers with double-fabric sneaker socks. Like Easy Spirit mesh sneakers and Wright's Cool Mesh running sneaker socks. Lots of concrete and marble.

Steady Stiching 05-26-2012 10:13 AM

Oh this brings back bad memories.....tromping around the Mall in DC with a baddd case of plantar faciatis. Good to know you are planning!

I just bought a very cute pair of croc sandals. They are wedge heel and so very comfortable and not ugly at all

CaroleLee 05-26-2012 10:38 AM

Chaco's . They are made in Michigan and were previously made in Colorado. I wear them all year and the straps are can be tightened to adjust to your foot. Many people hike in these shoes because of the custom fit and your ankles won't turn in them

sorry i forgot the name.

Whatever you get, just be sure to get them early enough that you can wear them "around" and break them in to be sure they really are comfortable!
