Has anyone ever gotten a virus while opening links here?? I think I just did and can't even remember what link it was...

donnajean 04-12-2011 12:01 PM

I got one back in March, but my Norton's Antivirus caught it.

Raggiemom 04-12-2011 12:01 PM

I haven't from here but I'm very cautious about Facebook. I hope it doesn't mess up your computer too much.

amma 04-12-2011 12:05 PM

You can click on a link yesterday or days ago, and it will stay dormant for a while too. They do not always immediately rear their ugly little heads right away.

Always take care on clicking on any link, no matter where you are  :D:D:D

I guess I was just hoping people weren't so mean. My main computer just quit from it...hope my DH doesn't shoot me!!

ontheriver 04-12-2011 12:22 PM

No, I have a Mac. No viruses for me.

sometimes those links will get the virus and show up months later...not necessarily somebody being MEAN, at least not HERE and not intentionally!

NOT true...just a lady have her MAC crash and she lost years worth of stuff that even they could not retrieve for her!

gale 04-12-2011 12:46 PM

Once you go Mac you're in hock up to your eyeballs and can't afford anything else.

Ramona Byrd 04-12-2011 01:13 PM

Yes, my Mac was getting slow, so I had to run the antivirus.
Now we're back on track, as is this site. It's running smooth now, faster than it was days ago.

Yup, I love Macs, still have my first one from the mid 80s, a Mac 512. And it still works. Have the printer, ThunderScan and wires for the Internet. I won't throw it away, but will donate it to a museum if anyone wants it. Nobody loves it but me.

I paid more in antivirus software than my Mac cost. You get what you pay for. Chacque a son gout. (To each his own)

ALL computers can crash, even Macs. That has nothing to do do with virus'. Unless you are the computer tech that worked on that computer and can testify that it crashed solely because of a virus.

grayma 04-12-2011 01:56 PM

I have a Mac, but often wish I had a PC. The embroidery CDs won't work on my Mac to download to the card to plug into the machine.

Murphy 04-12-2011 02:07 PM

Nope.

BellaBoo 04-12-2011 02:32 PM

You must be using an out of date browser. The new browsers will not let you open a site that has a virus. You have to update your browser just like you do your computer. If you get one from an email then the virus program you have does not have email protection or it is not turned on.

DH bought me a Mac Air Book. He thought I would like a laptop. I don't like it at all. It's over there sitting in the box. All my quilt programs run perfectly on my pc and that and internet is all I use the computer for. I don't keep files or records or do any business on mine.

cheryl rearick 04-12-2011 02:38 PM

I know MOST all peole do not like AOL, I am exception, I'd not be without them. I can place EVERYTHING to aol, verses my hard deive. If my computer crashes, I've still saved everything. I've had AOL since 1994 and never had a problem... almost 20 years worth. I've never picked up a virus here, but the links I OPEN are quilting links usually a pattern here or there. Sorry you have found a virus... Do you have virus protection???? :)

I like AOL too - have been using it for a long time. How do you save things on it. PS. I only use it through the Internet not the program.

irishrose 04-12-2011 05:15 PM

I've been having a lot of 'locked out' files the last few days on only this site. My computer blocks the file and then lets me know that a faulty file tried to access my computer.

Aurora 04-12-2011 05:53 PM

I have gotten a few warnings from McAfee on links. So I just do not open them.

Aurora 04-12-2011 05:54 PM

Twice in one night.

Really? I've only paid maybe $100 total for all antivirus since we have had a computer (about 11 yrs now). I use a free one now and no problems so far *knock on wood* :XD:

I would love to try a mac but I can barely afford a good pc. And a mac would have to be in addition to the pcs we own since my kids' homeschool curriculum doesn't run on a mac. I could run it with the special software but would get no tech support. So...we have to have 3 pcs. No money left for a mac after that.

My sister just got a mac and hates it so far. I think because she's just not used to it yet.

genafan201 04-12-2011 07:05 PM

Same here!

luvTooQuilt 04-12-2011 07:16 PM

Hubby removed my downloading rights to my laptop after I crashed the office pc. Whoops!!!! one lil virus killed the pc. No way to recover. And he's a computer geek too !! So I did a huge no no!!!

chance 04-13-2011 05:01 AM

Picked up a trojan after visiting one of several quilting sites, including this Board. (I suspect but am not 100% sure - the culprit was Penny Helpern's site) - the trojan was 'mediash'? When I was there my popup blocker kept saying this site was trying to load activeX. I didn't allow but somehow it still came through. I am very careful about clicking on links and haven't had virus or trojan (only cookies) appear for years. (I haven't had this problem recur since i stopped visiting Penny's site).

Cindy2201 04-13-2011 06:04 AM

I'm not sure what the name of the virus was, but it's hopefully gone! My DH played all last night and It hasn't popped up again. I had gone to a site from here and downloaded a pattern, It never gave me any warnings, but right after I did it was when it started.Today I'll be putting all my music and pictures on my backup hard-drive. I had been lax in that aspect!

KarenBarnes 04-13-2011 06:04 AM

Yes and my husband had to rebuild my computer! Don't click on anything in the borders of the newsletters!! Also, if a message pops up saying that your computer might be infected "click here for more info" and you do, you've just infected it! Run some of the many free malware and other software products to get rid of the problem! Good luck, I almost got banned from coming to the site but he gave in when he could fix it! Yay!!!

Debra Mc 04-13-2011 06:14 AM

Had a friend that forwarded an email to me & my AVG totally blocked it. Ever since I had my computer people download a Antimalware program it has been great. So now once a year I take computer in & for $25.00 they renew it & clean up my computer for me. I do run my scans regularly. Best money I ever spent.

Sorrelpen 04-13-2011 06:30 AM

You know this really shocks me as to how miserable people have to be or have nothing more to do than sit and figure ways to screw up someone else's computor with a virus. Must be some very bored person. I just hope someother bored person messes up theirs. (jmho)

lillybeck 04-13-2011 06:46 AM

I did but my anti virus caught it before it did any harm. I will never understand what thrill someone gets from that.

jitkaau 04-13-2011 07:38 AM

Yes,just got one about an hour ago - used system restore to get back on line. The people who create these nuisances must lead sad, lonely lives.

redkimba 04-13-2011 08:01 AM

I really don't like clicking on the video links where I don't recognize the website. I know youtube; I don't know "watchthisvideo.com"...

enelra 04-13-2011 12:37 PM

my daughter told me not to open a site until i read the websit name....ie: a name with sewing, quilting, threads etc. are fine to use. also on FACEBOOK...look in your top bar where you see http, well it should read https for it to be safe, if it reads only http you should click on account, then account settings, then account security, then change, check the box secure browsing. then click save. stay safe!!

virg 04-13-2011 04:14 PM

I'm having the same problem. sometime I can get in a link and sometimes not.

GrandmK 04-13-2011 06:21 PM

I don't pay for antivirus and have never had a problem. Use the free ones. Most of your big computer guru's will tell you the same thing. Norton and McAfee just slow down your computer and don't do any better job of catching the bad guys!! JMHO I save my money for material!!!

I recently got a virus. Luckily, my son in-law is good with computers and I back up anything I like, he wiped it cleaned. What a pain.

Ask microsoft for free service to combat viruses!
It really works!

Ladies and Gents,

Please click the following link for FREE AVG anti virus. It is good for XP, Vista and 7. I've been running this for well over a year and it has picked up EVERYTHING that is a threat. I opted to have my computer scanned everyday automatically at 12:00 noon "just in case". I also run the free "Tune Up" program also available at the AVG site.

Remember to download the FREE BASIC EDITION, and NOT the trial, unless, of course you want the full blown version.
