Here, if you join the Animal Welfare League ($50) you get a much discounted price. If cat is up on their shots it is
$125.00

galvestonangel 10-26-2011 07:09 AM

Call your local shelter, sometimes ours has specials and it is very cheap.

traumaRN 10-26-2011 07:17 AM

OUTRAGEOUS! My suggestion is that you call the local Humane Society, ASPCA, or even a rescue organization for low cost spay/neutering options. There are many places that will do this cheaply regardless of your financial status. You will be supporting a great organization and getting good health care for your pet at an affordable price. There is an organization here called Rascal Unit and I saved over $300 using them compaired to my vet. I now only use my vet for emergencies. They once charged me over $200 to treat a simple case of allergic conjunctivitis. That's when I decided I was done.

Not if you want to take good care of them! Vets are like dentists - over priced - and they have you over a barrel. When we had our farm, to have a vet come and care for a cow cost practically nothing, but woe to you if you took you cat or dog to the vets office. That cost an arm and a leg. We just had to have our Cassie put to sleep. She had cancer. The Vet, " Well for $20.00 more we can dispose of her body - and for $20,00 more than that we can cremate her ---. "No thanks we will bury her ourselves in a place where she loved to be". She won't know it, but we will.

Our Animal Shelter offers a
free Neuter/Spay day once
or twice a year.
Check with yours.

I think you need to find a different vet ...that is way too much!

mommafank 10-26-2011 08:05 AM

Vets have to make a living and it is not easy---most are not rich. If you cannot afford their prices there are alternatives. Ask your vet sometime how much they make on a 60.00 spay----the anesthesia is not cheap.

JCL in FL 10-26-2011 08:19 AM

In our area we have lots of cat colonies and there are organizations that will do spaying/ neutering for around $35.00. The organization pays the rest to the vet and they do them at a discount. They have vans that go around and do it shopping center parking lots. It's a great service not only to the pet owner but the whole community. They also sell medications at cost to help people out. We have many people on fixed income and it's hard for them to find the money to get heart guard and flea medication.

caspharm 10-26-2011 08:30 AM

I just found some websites for MN: http://mnspayneuter.org/ or http://mnsnap.org/.

Both are resources for this. Good luck with this. Nice of you to do this.

kathyjg 10-26-2011 09:03 AM

Our animal Shelter has a neuter and spay program. Have to fill out an app, it's done by local vets. We used it a couple of yrs ago on a female we rescued. I think the cost was $35 and an extra $5 if they needed their rabies shot. Took her in the morning and picked her up in the afternoon.

BellaBoo 10-26-2011 10:09 AM

The local Humane Society (not ASPCA) here gives vouchers for cat 'fixing' that cost the owner only $10 for the operation. Vaccines and other well being isn't covered. Check with the local chapter in your area. The Humane Society is all volunteer and every dollar is used for the animals. The ASPCA gives .10 per dollar donated to help the local chapters. The ASPCA exective's cost and salaries take most of the donation money. There was a big write up about this not long ago, how corrupt the ASPCA was.

sassey 10-26-2011 10:34 AM

I live in a city to have my dog spayed was going to be almostm 400 I was visiting family was in a small town got dog spayed all shots and a tooth pulled for 140 check out a nearby small town

romanojg 10-26-2011 11:04 AM

There is a special program in our area; I got my little american eskimo done and just paid for shots and a heart worm test. My son's Akita is nexted; couldn't do it before since he'd just had surgery. His will also cost me around 30 since he needs shots but the surgery is free. I'm so happy we had this program. Having a 20lb female and a 100lb male made it really bad when she went in heat.

Meme2six 10-26-2011 11:11 AM

I adopted my kitty from a rescue group. She was spayed and had her shots and I only paid $70 for the adoption. She's been worth every penny of it!

Mona Lisa 2011 10-26-2011 12:10 PM

Call your local SPCA chapter. They usually have help centers and/or coupons.................

debs 10-26-2011 12:16 PM

geez! Bet the feral cat population there is out of site!

The Animal Birth Control Clinic here does low cost neuters for $25 & now have a program for senior citizens that catch ferals & bring in done for free. Do require Rabies shot, but it runs around $10-$15.

It would be cheaper for you to fly it down here have it done & fly it back than doing it there!

Check into a low cost clinic somewhere close, most big cities have them.

arimuse 10-26-2011 12:23 PM

GOOD GRIEF! I have all my cats and dogs fixed - male and female and none has ever cost that much including all shots! shop around, call vets - even if you have to put your animal in a carrier and drive to a small town its way cheaper. We pay between 45 and 60 for cats and more for dogs, but it is an absolute for me. We have a lot of strays come into our lives and we can usually place some in good homes if theyre fixed, plus, they are just nicer, calmer, less territorial that way sharet

stitchit222 10-26-2011 12:24 PM

Yes, check with your local Cat Rescue Group. Some have programs funded by the county. Ours cost 30.00 per cat. This included: Rabies Shot
Distemp.
Neut/Spay
AND Micro-chipped

(We also gave a donation, too.) But, this is for only ferral cats...(Barn Cats).
Our House Cats rec'd 50.00 discount per cat.
Good Luck

nativetexan 10-26-2011 12:26 PM

again, consider the pet. when i took my mama cat to Planned Pethood it was the most busy noisy place i'd ever been to. Children running all around and screaming. she was frightened out of her skin. I would pay to have more of a peaceful place to care for my pet in future. money or no money.

I do dog rescue and can usually get it done for under $50. We have clinics here that basically just do neutering. Ask around and you'll find it cheaper, I'm sure.....you can even just google your state plus "neutering a cat" and should come up with some great places and ways to do it MUCH less expensively.

carrollcats 10-26-2011 01:48 PM

You need to shop around. Call your local Humane Society as the one in my state (Missouri) offers to do it for $40 and there are 2 other clinics in town that will do it for about the same price. And sometimes there is a BIG difference in price between different vets!

kwendt 10-26-2011 01:52 PM

What????? No way. Talk to the humane center, find out what groups have discounts on strays. There's usually a group that does stray managment or TNR (trap, neuter, release) and that sort of thing. Hook up with them. Get the discount, since this is a stray cat. Should cost you less than $100 for the surgery, antibotic shot, Rabies shot, FeLV/FLeuk testing and such.

Friends of Animials, Animal Rescue Force, Animal Rescue League, etc. all have programs.

OR... if that doesn't work. Have your dearest 70 year old friend take the cat in. Get the Seniors discount. lol.

Good luck!

MN Gamma 10-26-2011 03:06 PM

Check out an organization called Minnesota Spay/Neuter Project. They might be able to help you out.

aronel 10-26-2011 03:08 PM

I paid over 200 dollars a little over a year ago to have a stray neutered and tested for feline hiv and leukemia, I thought that was high, I guess not.

IdahoSandy 10-26-2011 04:06 PM

Call a few more vets, as this vet is way, way too high.

fratcat 10-26-2011 04:39 PM

Most towns have a location for discount spay/neutering. Ours here is 59 (male) $69 (female) and that includes examination, rabies vaccine. I hope you area has something just like it.

Start calling other vets, and/or the humane society in your area. Many shelters also have low cost programs.

greenini 10-26-2011 05:37 PM

There are cheaper options then our vet and we were thinking about it for Ray, my avatar, who we adopted when he appeared at a campground and we were told he had been abandoned there 3 months prior.

It cost us about $350 to fix him, get 5 stitches in his shoulder from 1 wound, have the pus filled chest wound cleaned, have him wormed, get tested for feu-leuk and also get all the shots, since he hadn't been fixed we figured he'd never been vaccinated. After finding all the problems we were really glad we HAD taken him to our regular vet, since I don't know how the cheaper clinic would have dealt with the other problems.

And they did give us a discount for rescuing a stray. I think you could probably find a cheaper vet for sure. When we were on the road with our last cat who needed to be put to sleep, one of the vets I called insisted on doing a $200 physical himself, even tho we had the paperwork from 2 other vets we'd taken him to on the trip...no thanks, we knew it was time. Another vet just put him to sleep....thankfully so he did have to suffer.

tuesy 10-26-2011 05:51 PM

WOW  that's alot. Where do you live that it cost that much?
When I got my Belle (my avatar) fixed it was under $100.

Jingle 10-26-2011 06:01 PM

Didn't cost me near that much, and mine are declawed all four paws and neutered, all males now. I don't remember just all much. Humane Society her is not so cheap, helps to be a senior citizen, but not much. I have a Vet I take them to.

Quiltaddict 10-26-2011 09:25 PM

That is outrageous. I got my kitty from the local animal shelter. Before I could take her home she was spayed and tested and got her first shots. Total cost $50.

Rann 10-27-2011 06:50 AM

Georgia has a low cost program through the Humane Society.

Landers 10-27-2011 08:02 AM

You may need to find a new vet. That vet is not in business for you or your animals.

LindaaJR 10-27-2011 11:03 AM

Check your local Animal Shelter. They usually know of a clinic for reduced costs of neutering and spaying. You might want to check the next county if you do not get much response from your local shelter. I go to a clinic in the next county, about 45 min to an hour away, but is well worth it for the cost to me. Plus it is in Lancaster PA so get to shop LOL. Good luck, take care.
Linda

bearisgray 10-27-2011 11:09 AM

Thank you for all the responses.

Maybe this is in the same category as paying for a $12.00 haircut versus a $50.00 one?

Or paying $12.00/yard at a LQS for fabric versus $5.44 at WalMart?

Sometimes one is willing to pay a bit more for care and/or service that one is reasonably sure will be high quality and that the vets do seem to care.

Is this cat worth it? Are any of them?

But I've taken him in, so I feel duty-bound to continue to feed and shelter him. And get him modified. And his vaccinations. I will ask for a senior discount on a one-time basis, though.

mustangquilts 10-27-2011 11:13 AM

I would check around. The highest one around here is 79.00. Think is would be cheeper to do like my DGP always said they did. Stick the cat in a boot head fisrt and cut. YIKES!!!!!!!

Shayvian 10-27-2011 01:04 PM

Hi, Bearisgray!
I got my cat at the SPCA, and she was already spayed. I had to get her front declawed because of the laws here. That cost $194.00. The first cat I got front declawed was $50. Is it another case of "everything is going up," or just larger vet clinics with larger payroll?
Shayvian

nhnative 10-27-2011 01:17 PM

I think you should call someone else. That's awful.

Vets are wonderful people. Every time my animals are sick I take them to her. I just don't think the cost of doing something right such as shots and spay/neuter should cost an arm and a leg. Thank you so much for taking him in. You will see when this time passes he will be well worth the trouble.

shnnn 10-27-2011 02:20 PM

Yikes! I just got home from the vet - check up for the muttly. With all his shots, and a mani/pedi it was only $80. BUT, the estimate to neuter him $250!! then another $200 to remove his dew claws while the have him knocked out. That's nearly double what the last one cost me - and that was a female even!
