I just called the vet's office to see what it would cost to get the stray male cat neutered.

$242.50 - the operation itself
$75.40 - new patient exam
$17.28 - Rabies vaccination
$79.78 - Test for Feline HIV

$410.02

Yikes!

tomilu 10-25-2011 01:26 PM

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I worked with the local feral feline group and got mine fix and rabies shot for $60 each.

MissSandra 10-25-2011 01:27 PM

I think I paid around 300, for my buggie a year ago, although now with so many groups around I would see if there is any where else that you could get some help.
low cost spay and nuter.

QuiltnNan 10-25-2011 01:31 PM

wow, i was thinking of getting a pet... but i don't think i can afford one

jrhboxers 10-25-2011 01:31 PM

Check with the humane society or shelter. They will have the numbers of vets who offer low cost spay/neuter. Especially if he is a stray cat. I just had my baby girl spayed for $60. It is bare bones though. No shots, or labs or anything else. I do all of my own shots - except for the rabies - so I didn't need anything else.

jayelee 10-25-2011 01:35 PM

I called Spay or Neuter Now and got my two stray kitties taken care of last year for 40 dollars each

scrapngmom 10-25-2011 01:36 PM

I just had our male kitten neutered. $60 for operation, $10 for pain meds for a total of $70.

hazeljane 10-25-2011 01:38 PM

I would ask around, and call your local Humane Society to ask them about any spay/neuter services. That is just craziness. If I paid those kind of prices, I could never rescue animals. I just paid that much this morning to have a dog's broken leg set with special order pins.....

nativetexan 10-25-2011 02:29 PM

yep on my two kittens we paid almost $300.00 each. when it was time for mamma to go we weren't sure she would even stay with us or want to run the streets again. so we took her to planned pethood for $75.00. she was so scared of that place. much too noisy, even for me. never again.

Ramona Byrd 10-25-2011 02:32 PM

We have a low cost spay/Nueutering here. When I found my stray as a throwaway baby, it cost me 40 dollars, overnight stay. No shots or any fancy stuff, just the operation itself.

Getting an animal at a no kill shelter is way out of line, should be more instruction in caring for the critter and less money to shell out to start with.

exactly, check them out..
in Michigan, we have just opened a clinic for low cost spay and neuter..PAWS is the name of the group.

carolaug 10-25-2011 02:34 PM

call your local animal rescue...they have specials and also always cheaper than the vet. ours is 25.00 or was...shots were like 15.00 operations are vet volunteers.

Definitely check around. We have groups around here that will help and even pay for low cost spaying/nuetering. Check at Pet Smart or other pet stores and they should be able to tell you about groups that can help.

Yes, check around! There's a vet in my town and one or two days a month he performs low cost spaying and neutering. I think the cost is about 40% of the usual operation.

Debbie C 10-25-2011 03:06 PM

Our local animal shelter charges $65 - no fancy veterinarian!

ann31039 10-25-2011 03:13 PM

i had my female dog done at the local PAWS and they only charged 140. and that included the collar thing cause she wouldn't leave the incision alone.

That is crazy! Is this vet situated on the "right side of the tracks"? I know vets around here have been known to charge more depending on where they are located. Call around. When I needed blood tests done on my dog, I called around. There was a anywhere from a $20 to a $150 difference depending on the vet.
I don't know if you are close enough to utilize this facility, but they may have other references! Thanks for "neutralizing" this boy

Quiltbeagle 10-25-2011 03:57 PM

Our county Animal Center provides neutering and spaying for about $40, which also includes micro-chipping. The hardest thing about was was getting the appointment...the slots fill up quickly! I'd check with your local animal center or humane society.

irishrose 10-25-2011 06:29 PM

I had a canine female spayed for $108 total. I know felines are less and males are less. Moira's vaccines were up to date and I declined pre op blood work, so this was the total for the spay, pain meds and collar.

bluebird 10-25-2011 07:09 PM

Our country vet charges $20-25 for neutering, $25-30 for spaying a cat. Dogs are just a bit more. If the female is in heat the cost goes up $5-10. Also get a voucher from the local adoption kennel to spay or neuter your adopted pet. At some of these prices it is no wonder there is an over population of cats and dogs. :(

lab fairy 10-25-2011 08:13 PM

I agree with calling the local SPCA. They may know of vets who offer better prices or offer services themselves.

Sorry sounds like you need to find yourself a new vet. Dog spays cost around 300 cat neuters shouldn't be more than a hundred if you can even call it a real surgery takes like 2 minutes to do, 400 dollars really is the vet shitting on a gold plated toilet. 40 dollars for a vet visit is normal 75 ouch, Rabies shouldn't be over 10 dollars. I say shop shop around. Its a wonder that vet is still in business with that price gouging

COYOTEMAGIC 10-25-2011 08:52 PM

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!!!! Our local spay/neuter clinic (staffed by each of the local vets for a different day of the week) charges $30. $35 if they need a rabies shot. I've taken my last 2 babies there to get it done.

beatys9 10-25-2011 08:56 PM

Wow. Seems very high to me! Do you have a county shelter that offers these services? Sometimes ours has good deals.

slk350 10-25-2011 09:12 PM

WOW...I adopted a kitty in July for $30 from the humane shelter. That included first shots and bringing him back at 2-3 months to be "fixed".

Leota 10-25-2011 09:25 PM

check around there are places that do low cost spay/neutering and first shot.
we go our ferral turned adopted kitten spayed and first shots at SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today ... http://www.spotusa.org/
It was only $40 for all of it. She was only 10 weeks old so we couldn't get her rabies at the same time so we had to pay more for 2nd shots and rabies

Rainy Day 10-25-2011 11:48 PM

That is more than a vasectomy for a man!!!!!!!

merchjag 10-26-2011 03:17 AM

Check out your local shelters-some times they offer spaying/neutering for a special price. Vets are getting just like doctors- I wanted to get my kitty's teeth cleaned-he's a big boy and has his claws(yikes) wow!! shellshocked-$1,010 -forget that!!! I'll take my chances doing it myself!

thseabreze 10-26-2011 03:39 AM

some places have animal shelters, that do things like this for a minimal charge..we don't have it here, but where my daughter lives, they do have it..so check with your local animal shelter, or Sisca.

HOLY COW OUR VET HER IN OUR AREA ONLY CHARGES 45 MALES 60 FEMALES.MAN WHAT A RIP OFF YOU ARE GETTING I THINK.

bearisgray 10-26-2011 03:44 AM

I can't say that the young gray cat is a stray stray - We've been feeding him for about 15 months and he's been living in the basement garage for about 9 months.

And he has us trained to let him in and out.

I do like this vet - a lot - but the prices sure seemed to have jumped at this office a lot, too.

JanetP 10-26-2011 04:33 AM

That's outrageous. Had mine done just a month ago and it was only $65.00.

girlsfour 10-26-2011 04:40 AM

I had a cat neutered less than a year ago and I didn't pay that much. My vet is in Stillwater. He is pretty reasonable. I also know of another vet in South St Paul that I hear is really reasonable as well.

Or maybe you could call Caring for Cats in No. St Paul. It's a feline rescue - they could have info for other places around the state.

PM if you need any phone numbers....

Meg

NUTMEG10 10-26-2011 04:57 AM

Shop around, you can get it for allot less than what they are asking.

Mamagus 10-26-2011 04:57 AM

Pets are very expensive. Neutering, vaccinations and check up... about 1000.00 for the first year. Finn goes for blood tests each time his phenobarb dosage changes ( can't get it right just yet) and that blood test costs us 150.00 every six weeks. His drugs are 30.00 a month and he has special dog food that costs 60.00 a bag. His purchase price was NOTHING compared to the vet bills over the last 6 years! He needs his teeth cleaned now and will require two vets... one to monitor him because of his seizures and one to do the work... 700.00
No more doggies for me once Finn is gone. That's a lot of fabric I could be buying!

jad1044 10-26-2011 05:08 AM

and they wonder why so many animals are running around having babies with costs like that? It can't be that much and even come close to a fair price.

call the Humane Society or a feline rescue. We will neuter, shots, and chip a male cat for $50. It is ridiculous to charge so much for doing the right thing.

Caswews 10-26-2011 05:28 AM

Its not cheap for sure to get an animal fixed, but look around there might be a local shelter or society that does it for cheap !

damaquilts 10-26-2011 06:45 AM

First I commend you for wanting to do this. And yes call around the shelters and rescues to find out who they use. In GA there were a couple of mobile units. I used CatSnip.. Drop them off early in the morning and pick them up later that afternoon. And ferals I think they did for free. Too bad not all places have things like this. It would make for many more animals getting fixed. My other pet peeve is the vet charging $50 for microchipping. It can be done WAY cheaper than that.

Diannia 10-26-2011 06:47 AM

We have something called HOPE foundation here. Very low cost and in a nice clean new building. It's wonderful! They were doing Pitbull and pit mixes for free when I took my cat in...
