Does anyone know???? My crock pot quit heating...Can I use the stone liner and lid in my oven for slow cooking? If not .... anyone have any ideas of possible use for the liner. No drainage hole so flower pot is out of question..too big for paper weight!

Airwick156 06-20-2011 08:02 AM

I would think that you can use it in the oven as its stoneware. I'm going to be watching this topic.

quiltinghere 06-20-2011 08:03 AM

I would think so - but I'm giving that opinion without having ever tried it.

So YOU try it and let US know! :)

amma 06-20-2011 08:05 AM

I don't know why not... it is made to take the heat :D:D:D

DD bought one to use as a dog water dish, it is heavy enough it stays in place

Up North 06-20-2011 08:11 AM

I have used mine in the oven with no problems.

DogHouseMom 06-20-2011 08:11 AM

Check the bottom, it should tell you if it's oven safe. If not ... you can drill holes in the bottom for a planter. If it breaks while drilling it, then bury it so it's 1/2 out of the ground then plant stuff around it as if it fell and the flowers "spilled" out.

My old crock pot died and I saved the tall round crock insert to bake/roast in the oven. It can take very high heat. It is excellent to roast the upright chickens (beer can chicken). It's usually easy to find the crock inserts at thrift stores. I have a big oval one I use to bake big casseroles for potlucks. The food stays warm a long time and the crock pot lid fits perfectly. But I don't put the lid in the oven. I cover it with foil if the pot needs to be covered.

Chasing Hawk 06-20-2011 08:18 AM

We used ours as a watering dish for the dogs.

carolstickelmaier 06-20-2011 08:46 AM

Thanks for the replies. Think I will put a roast in the oven this week. Of course it will have all the goodies with it......potatoes, carrots, onions and what ever else I can find in the fridge. I just did not want a mess to clean up in the oven.,,,,

I wouldn't put the lid in the oven. Mine has a rubber gasket around it so it would melt.

BMP 06-20-2011 08:58 AM

I had the same thing happen and I use it in the oven with no problems...

Murphy 06-20-2011 09:18 AM

I use mine in the oven with no problems. I have a stone crock and a glass lid.

QuiltE 06-20-2011 09:19 AM

You might want to call the manufacturer to check. I hate you to have it go crrrrrack and lose your food that's cooking. To say the least about the mess to clean up!

I often use my crock as a large mixing bowl!

I agree with this. I would give it a try in the oven before trying to actually prepare something in it. See if it will hold up to the normal oven temp.
Here is a link for you to check out that talks about this subject.

Interesting!

LoriEl 06-20-2011 12:58 PM

At Thanksgiving my sister always baked her broccoli casserole in the crock pot insert in the oven and then put it in the metal part to keep it hot. Never any problems.

montanajan 06-20-2011 11:07 PM

I use my old crockery liner in the oven - like the size for large piece of elk roast, or fpr casserloe to serve large group of family/friends.

sewmom 06-21-2011 04:14 AM

If you did want to use it for a planter, all you have to do is put some broken crockery(plant safe),broken terra cotta pot, or stones in the bottom for drainage. Works like a charm.

Flo Pierce 06-21-2011 04:25 AM

I can testify that you should not put it on a burner. The oven
on a low heat, I'd say yes. I have a metal slow cooker now
and love it. From the burner to brown and into the oven or
on the hot plate that it cooks on. Really nice and convenient.

kwhite 06-21-2011 04:26 AM

Not on the burner but I use an old liner for my bean pot quite often. it works very well.

I don't know about the oven, but I put one on my stovetop once to make gravy and the thing shattered!

joycecil 06-21-2011 05:42 AM

You just can't use the lid in the oven.

Auntie 06-21-2011 05:46 AM

I have one that I put in the refrigerator or freezer to cool and use it for potato salad. Works great.

OmaForFour 06-21-2011 05:51 AM

It is made to take heat but I don't know it if takes heat as high as an oven. I would try it with a small amount of water in the bottom just in case it cracks.

My suggestion would be to use it as a planter with some kind of an inset so that water can drain down so as not to rot a plant since you cannot drill a hole in it or it will crack for sure.

Maybe make some quilted flowers for a bouquet that doesn't neet to be watered.

rainagade 06-21-2011 07:36 AM

I have not used my crock in the oven but after reading this I have a question about the glass lids.

Why can the lids not go in the oven? I have numerous baking dishes with glass lids that are safe in the oven?

Using them for doggie water bowls is a great idea!

liondenise 06-21-2011 08:57 AM

that happened to mine too so now I use the stone bowl part when I make pickles - works just like a crock

Becka 06-21-2011 08:58 AM

I have mine on the counter by the stove holding my cooking utensils. But mine is a "country" kitchen - might not work for everyone :) I have another (from when my dad's broke. I don't really have THAT kind of bad luck with crocks :) downstairs by the fireplace to collect the woodash. If you're hesitant to put it in the oven, you could also put dried or silk flowers in it and use for a centerpiece or decoration.

Nolee 06-21-2011 12:07 PM

It's like Corning Ware; go ahead and use it in the oven.

madamekelly 06-21-2011 01:14 PM

If your lid is all glass, you can use it in the oven, or just cover with tin foil. I use one of my old ones to hold my utensils since I have itty bitty kitchen drawers, and lots of bamboo utensils. (wide handles.)

Rose L 06-21-2011 01:20 PM

I have the opposite problem. I've been using my crock pot for so many years now that I've simply cooked the finish right off of the crock but the heating element works like a champ. Wish I lived near a city so I could hit the thrift shops for a new crock! Oh well, they make those disposable cooking bags for them now so I'll just continue to use those in the crock until I need both parts replaced. Good Luck!

Unless all glass, then you can. They are made to heat to boiling, so you should have no problems. If you are not sure, wrap the whole lid in tin foil, then use it that way. If it breaks, no glass in the food. If your lid has plastic on it, measure it, and go to Goodwill and find an all glass lid to fit it.

RobertaMarie 06-21-2011 02:29 PM

Ours quit this week also. DH bought a new one for less than twenty dollars, and the book that came with it said not to use the crock or lid in oven, stove top, etc. Too bad, as I love the crockery. As someone else said, "when in doubt, don't". I had an oven approved stoneware slab break on me once and it was a real mess to clean up.... Good luck and be safe. ;)

grannypat7925 06-21-2011 03:29 PM

If it is a crock, yes you can use it in the oven but watch the handle on top the lid. Sometimes they do not like the heat, just depends on what they are made of.

I have mine in the oven many times. No problems.

AlienQuilter 06-22-2011 04:24 PM

I don't see why you couldn't use the crock in the oven.

My very first crock had an all glass lid.

All the ones since then have a hard, plastic knob handles. I have very nice pots and pans and the plastic knob handles on the lids go in the oven just fine. But, the skillets can't go in the oven because of the handles. You would think the skillet handles would be move oven resistent than the lid handles.!

I use those liners all the time. Makes clean up a breeze! Won't go back to using the crock without them! I do spray them with cooking spray, found out the hard way that food really sticks to it and lost good size chunks of meat.

I lost a very large batch of enchiladas once - glass casserole cracked in 2 - mess in oven, food unsafe re: chards.
