Curiosity question....... Do you rearrange?

Recently DH and I had a visitor that we see once a year when he visits from Alaska that commented that nothing ever changes when he visits us. So that got me to thinking. I purchased my house in 2003 and have never rearranged the living room furniture, it's always been the same set up, which by the way DH and I like. New furniture pieces from time to time, but same set up. Do any of you rearrange your living rooms for a new/fresh layout? If so how often and it would be interesting to know the reasons why the rearranging happens.
On a side note, I have rearranged my quilting studio multiple times for functionality purposes.😉

When I lived in California, it was common to rearrange furniture in my home but our late 1700s home here in Maine is not conducive due to size and layout. There is only one good size wall in both the living room and parlor and the three remaining walls either have low windows with deep sills or a fireplace. I do change paint color and decor when I get bored.

rjwilder 07-12-2020 03:30 AM

No, we have it set up the way we like it and it works for us. I have changed the throw pillows on the couch and we bought a new area rug recently. As far as our individual spaces, yes we have both changed them for better functionality. My sewing room has been changed many times as I've deleted and added new machines and more fabric. His man cave, he did get a new desk chair and that's about it.

I don’t have the space to rearrange living room furniture, my house was built in 1940 and it’s shape is challenging, but I made it work for me after rearranging it a bazillion times! But I will confess that I like to rearrange furniture and spaces, recently did so in my sewing studio and my master bedroom and I’m much happier with the layout in both.

lberna 07-12-2020 04:14 AM

We rarely change. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Lena1952 07-12-2020 04:23 AM

I am so happy to know I am not alone! All the gals I work with rearrange and often. My set up works so I don't feel, the need to change it. We have bought new furniture, added or changed artwork (usually quilts) but the furniture never gets rearranged. I thought it was me, but apparently not. Yay!

Tartan 07-12-2020 04:45 AM

I seldom rearrange my furniture. If it is in the best functional, comfortable spot, why move it?

Iceblossom 07-12-2020 04:48 AM

The only time things get re-arranged at this point is when I get something different, like a completely different piece of furniture. I'd like to put the bed on the opposite wall and switch the master bedroom, hubby likes it the way it is. Eventually I'll actually paint the room and then I'll go ahead and move everything the way I want to, think the hubby will find out it will be just fine.

I don't change my art often either. Once it gets wall space, it pretty much stays.

One of the things that determines my layout is the electrical outlets and that we have various animal habitats on the most flat surfaces. The reptiles need their heaters and things, once furniture has a tank on it, it sort of loses the furniture appeal...

Doggramma 07-12-2020 05:53 AM

I don’t have that many ways to switch things in the living room around due to limited wall space. But in the old house, I liked to rearrange the furniture every couple of months.

SusieQOH 07-12-2020 05:56 AM

My sister and I are total opposites. She changes/redecorates all the time but I don't. I'm like my Mom. Only paint and maybe some wall art gets changed up a bit.
I'm not that interested in decorating. I just love to sew but my sis is so good at what she does.

Debbie Ness 07-12-2020 06:22 AM

Husband likes to make changes. Tried it a couple of times..... hours later to find out it doesn't work, look right or some other issues and move it all back. Like Iberna says "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

SallyS 07-12-2020 07:01 AM

I've found the best furniture arrangement and I'm happy with it. Besides, to change it would take time away from sewing.

sewbizgirl 07-12-2020 07:31 AM

When I was a kid I remember moving my bedroom furniture around all the time, rearranging it. As an adult, I don't do it. Once I find a place for everything I leave it there. I'd rather spend my time doing just about anything else than rearranging.

mmunchkins 07-12-2020 07:57 AM

Iceblossom, What kind of reptiles do you keep?

lberna 07-12-2020 08:45 AM

From Iceblossom "The reptiles need their heaters and things, once furniture has a tank on it, it sort of loses the furniture appeal...". Omg, she got me at reptiles. 😟

Fizzle 07-12-2020 09:00 AM

My older sister told me years ago it is easier to change the furniture than it is to change husband!

Jordan 07-12-2020 09:17 AM

Very rarely do I rearrange my living room furniture. I think it is boring the way it is but our LR is an odd shape so my decorating skills are zero on how to change things up.

mountain-momma 07-12-2020 09:26 AM

I Love to rearrange my living room I do moved it around at least twice a year

KalamaQuilts 07-12-2020 10:30 AM

seemed like my mother moved the furniture around at least once a month. We'd come home from school and be doing our homework in a different space. Probably a result of the type of housekeeping they did back then, True Home Makers, full scale.

I move the furniture when we move...or when a piece is worn out and outta here.

lberna 07-12-2020 12:34 PM

This reminds me of my father. He often said that when he returned from work, he never knew how the furniture would be placed or the color of my mother's hair. 😉

Jingle 07-12-2020 01:02 PM

When I was a stay at home for 25 years I rearranged anything and everything that wasn't "tied down". About every month or two. I totally cleaned everything every week. I figured I couldn't clean good without moving everything so might as well rearranged.

After that I worked and there was no where to move things so I didn't. I would still move things if I had the space.

I always liked a different look.

Onebyone 07-12-2020 02:49 PM

I do often because once I move it to clean I usually shift the furniture arrangement. I don't have any furniture against the walls, each has walking distance around it so it's easy to rotate the set up. I have two sofas in the living room so a sofa is in the same spot just might not be the same sofa. Same with the chairs and end tables, all exchange places. I do change out the area rugs often and throw pillows.

This is me. I did it all the time when I was a kid. As an adult, it's a bit harder - the living room furniture is much bigger and heavier, and as others have said, the space and layout is challenging to fit. Especially when you have a projector and screen that are attached to walls. I would if I could, though.
When the kids were small, I rearranged their rooms often. I'd like to rearrange our bedroom, but hubby needs to finish making a headboard first, and that doesn't seem to be very high on his priority list.

Murphy224 07-13-2020 12:22 AM

When I was younger I often rearranged the furniture mainly for a "change". Now that I am older, physically moving/shoving furniture around is much harder and a bit more dangerous, so I don't do it anymore. I found the arrangement I like for each room and as others have said "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I sometimes think I would like to re-paint but then I look at the furniture and realize how much work it would be to move it and the up and down on a step ladder, and the mess that accompanies painting, so I wait a bit and the desire to re-paint passes. LOL
I do however re-do wall art and decorative items that sit around. Currently looking for something new for the top of the entertainment center and a tall bookcase. When the virus is more under control, I will be more comfortable going to a store and just browsing around to see what appeals to me.

WMUTeach 07-13-2020 02:43 AM

I used to change my arrangement of furniture often, but now, not not so much. Like many others have said, often a room has its own limitations that must be accommodated. I moved in to my current residence 4.5 years ago and except for minor changes to fit in a Christmas tree each December, the rooms have stayed the same. I think part of it is age and old bones. https://cdn.quiltingboard.com/images...s/rolleyes.png The thought of moving furniture just for the sake of moving it? Naahh. I am more apt to rearranging accessories or seasonal touches to freshen up my spaces.

Mkotch 07-13-2020 02:47 AM

I have always rearranged the furniture before the house we currently live in. Now it's been arranged the same way for about 10 years. So one Sunday this winter, I decided to try moving things around. DH begrudgingly agreed to help, and we moved things from place to place to place, looking for a new arrangement. Nothing seemed better than what we had. So we went back to it. At least now we know this suits us best... until the next time I get it in my head to try rearranging!

sandy l 07-13-2020 03:13 AM

I belong to the "if it ain't broke........" . We moved into our house over twenty years ago, and the sofa is against the west wall, large chair on the north wall, another chair in front of window on south wall and entertainment unit on east wall. When we have replaced any of these pieces they go in the same spot. We have tried rearranging stuff, but it never looked or felt right.

craftiladi 07-13-2020 04:02 AM

I love to rearrange maybe once a year, when I was younger I did it a lot more. I love a fresh new look.

juliasb 07-13-2020 08:34 AM

My living room is the same as it has been since 1990! It is considered a "great room' and even though I have purchased new furniture it went in the exact set up as the old furniture.
I have rearranged my sewing studio partially. I spread things out into our guest room. Opps! Now I have to take care and clean that back out. The rest of my studio is unchanged since it was made for me in 1991. I guess I don't care for much change in anything.

Quilty-Louise 07-13-2020 02:58 PM

As a child my mother would rearrange the living room the time.

It was .. safe to get up in the middle of the night and walk through the living room.
Because the way the room was arranged when you went to bed would not be the same
30 minutes later.

I only rearrange a room until I figure out what works best for the room/furniture placement.

This! At Christmas the corner recliner gets moved out to the porch to make room for the tree, and as I unpack the Christmas boxes the "regular" accessories go in the seasonal boxes and the Christmas/Seasonal decorations come out.

When I was younger I rearranged a lot...not now.

craftiladi 07-14-2020 07:53 AM

Quilty Louis my husband use to tease me & tell ll his buddies it wasn't safe to enter our house after a night of drinking-lol

bearisgray 07-14-2020 08:29 AM

I rearrange blocks -

Other than that - the way the house was built - not many ways to arrange things.

Interesting question and answers. We seldom rearrange our furniture. I love working with fabric and colors but I am hopeless when it comes to decorating. Shortly after moving into our current house, I did hire an interior decorator to help with paint choices. Amazing, after two hours I had paint colors, and all rooms except bedrooms were rearranged (including furniture, pictures, lamps, knickknacks, etc.), and numerous suggestions or ways to update "the look" of the house. The decorator was practical, fast, nonjudgmental, offered ideas and solutions to problem areas. They suggested, we live with the changes for a week before deciding which changes were keepers and which weren't. Many of the solutions and changes we adopted, while only a few were rejected. Afterwards, we received numerous compliments from our visitors. That was numerous years ago and our lifestyle is changing and decorating styles have changed. We are overdue for another revamp of the house and I will be hiring a decorator for advice as the first step.

When I was younger I loved rearranging the furniture. I always felt like I cleaned the house much more thoroughly when moving things around. Now that I'm older I can only do that if I have help and besides I have much more furniture than I did 30 years ago. LOL

I only rearrange a few pieces when I put up Christmas trees. (Notice the plural...my family threatens to put me in a home for the permanently Christmas deranged!)

cashs_mom 07-19-2020 07:31 PM

I rarely re-arrange furniture. It's just way to much work. I've been in this house since 2000 and everything is pretty much where it was when we moved in. We've added a few things and replaced things but everything is pretty much in the same place.

lberna 07-28-2020 02:56 PM

I have a friend who will get up at 3 in the morning and start rearranging. Not for me.

MicheleC 07-29-2020 09:52 AM

I rearranged our furniture several times after we moved into our house for a couple reasons. It has been the same way for a couple years now. I’m itching for a change, though! I enjoy a fresh look but due to the heat source in our home (a kerosene stove) I’m limited in what I can do. For the furniture we currently have, the current arrangement is the best one which is why it has stayed. Once we get new furniture, though, it will likely change... and change again until we find the best fit.
