Current responses to "old posts"

Found almost a dozen of those this morning.....I have to start looking more carefully at the original post date.

cjsews 09-18-2016 05:19 AM

I've noticed this too. Not fair to those recent posters to fined theirs is back 2 - 3 pages

LoriEl 09-18-2016 05:29 AM

It has also confused me lately, although I don't mind seeing the old pictures!

nativetexan 09-18-2016 05:54 AM

same here. don't know how old posts are looked up. perhaps they don't show the date in certain ways people use the forum. got me!

bearisgray 09-18-2016 05:55 AM

Sometimes the topic just catches the readers' attention.

Homespun 09-18-2016 06:23 AM

I always scroll to bottom of main page and click 'archive". Then I see the posts as they come in.

MandyC 09-18-2016 06:43 AM

No need to be the curmudgeon hallway monitors. People can read and respond to any post.

I think that's it bear. Some people (particularly new posters) may be lookinig for something specific and post to the thread not realizing its several years old

nativetexan 09-18-2016 08:56 AM

ha, ha. no body is a curmudgeon. we just wondered how it happens. some sort of searching or what ever. just saw several in pictures. makes a boring read unless someone posts something really new to the subject.

sewbizgirl 09-18-2016 08:59 AM

Sometimes there's not a lot of new activity and we end up in the older posts. Once one person responds, others follow and old threads are revived. It might help if the date of the post was shown on the first page, not just when you open it.

NJ Quilter 09-18-2016 09:34 AM

When I come here I click on the 'what's new' tab at the top of the page. The posts are listed in most recent order of last post. That view also shows the original date of the post as well as the most recent post. If it's a topic I'm interested in, I'll still look. Probably just a matter of some newer folks looking at various topics of interest to them and they post accordingly. It's all good.

bearisgray 09-18-2016 11:53 AM

Sometimes I missed the thread when it was first posted.

MaryKatherine 09-18-2016 01:45 PM

About once a week I go to the "personal" page and check the posts I started.

Jingle 09-18-2016 02:45 PM

I look at whatever catches my attention. If the post is too old I read but may not post to it.
Seems there is no harm in reading older posts or they would be deleted.

TexasSunshine 09-18-2016 03:55 PM

I go to archives also then to the topic I want to read such as Main, Pictures, etc.

Geri B 09-18-2016 04:01 PM

This is Geri...the one who posted the original comment about old posts. I wasn't really complaining, I too, sometimes have missed the original thread and don't mind "catching up". It just seemed that morning there was a slew of old pics with current comments....and I clicked and got involved in the discussion, reading on and on, then looked and saw the original post dates....and realized that I had seen them "before".....granted some of this info might be helpful to newbies, and even remind some of us seasoned members of something...I just will remind myself to look at original post date, before I click on it.....hope that doesn't make me a curmudgeon....

Cotton Mama 09-18-2016 05:11 PM

Geri, you didn't say dagnabit or refer to anyone as a dang fool whippersnapper, so I don't think you qualify as a curmudgeon.

I have been on the list for several years as well, but I use what's new, and if the topic is interesting, I will do a reply and after it has been posted, see where it is years and years old. I just don't always check the original post date, then think...shoot, should have paid attention.

Sandygirl 09-19-2016 02:52 AM

I get amused at new replies to old posts in regard to family dramas. pictures forum...no problem. Easy to miss them when new or if they preceed my membership. Nice to be able to search for specific techniques or types of quilts....no big deal if originally posted 5-6 years ago. What is "old" becomes new to those who have not seen it before.

The date is shown on each post. But when new posts are added, and you've gone into that a ways, it's hard to remember that it is an old post.

I look through the Archives all the time. And, sometimes I comment on something that I think others who may not have been quiltboard members at that time, may enjoy seeing. I also am hoping that the person who originally posted the picture or thread will see and know how much I appreciated their effort to share.

SewingSew 09-19-2016 05:15 AM

First of all, what is a curmudgeon? And second of all, I have found the older "revived" posts to be confusing. I don't always pay attention to the dates. I joined the Quilting Board in April 2015, and so from the perspective of someone who is newer, I really appreciate the older posts, because they are new to me.

mac 09-19-2016 09:55 AM

So, I am confused. Is it a bad thing to post to an old post? It would seem that even if it was old, but had some interesting information, others might enjoy it too.

I may be one of the people who posted to an old thread yesterday. I made a comment on the gentleman who did a tutorial regarding cathedral windows. I thought he did a remarkable job and even though it was an old post I thought that he deserved kudos for a job well done. If someone hadn't of mentioned his thread regarding his tutorial, I would have never started my new project making one.

Additionally, I am embarrassed to say, but I had over 2100 unread messages in my inbox and was cleaning my inbox out yesterday. A lot of them were from the Board and I was reading them and commenting on some of them like they were new. Sorry, if caused some confusion.

SewingSew 09-19-2016 10:57 AM

Mac, I appreciate that you did that because I am very interested in making a Cathedral Window coverlet, and I learned valuable things from that tutorial.

I think the 'curmudgeon' comment was way more curmudgeonly than anything you posted!

A crochety old grouch.

No, it's not bad. Good can come of reviving an old thread.

bearisgray 09-19-2016 11:33 AM

The only time that (I think) making a comment on an old thread that sometimes can be awkward is when it starts out with "My ____ is very sick, please pray for _____"

And someone makes a comment (without reading the whole post) to the effect of "I will pray for ________"s recovery."
but four pages into the thread the original poster says "______ died."

Although - in my opinion - it is okay to send kind thoughts to/for whatever/whomever forever.

And, sometimes a reader has been away from their computer or the computer was at the computer doctor and are checking what they missed.
