Just a word of caution about electric blankets and quilts, especially those using poly batting: they don't play well together. This quilt was on top of an electric blanket that had been left on. A 3-year-old was sitting on the bed, playing. The poly batting melted from the heat from where he was sitting, and got hot enough to have the cotton material catch on fire. The little boy was not hurt, but the electric blanket is toast and the quilt is in for repairs.

Electric blankets are supposed to be used alone (I never knew this) and of course, should be turned off when not in use. I'll stick to loads of quilts on the bed!

All I can say is... OMG!!!!!!!!!

CoriAmD 07-28-2010 04:30 PM

this is why I don't use electric blankets. Always afraid they will catch fire. Pile on the quilts for me too!

lilpoohbearie 07-28-2010 04:34 PM

Thank God the little boy is ok. I had no idea I will think twice about my heating pad I use it all the time. Thank you for the heads up!

dglvr 07-28-2010 04:34 PM

Thats scary. Thanks for sharing that. I've always been afraid of elelctric blankets. I guess thats one more reason why.

My bedroom was up stairs in the converted attic little to no heat, For a short while I had an electric blanket, It caught fire and half of it was charred in the morning, Thank heavens I was not under that half and didn't get burnt. They scare the H$** out of me!!

cjomomma 07-28-2010 04:42 PM

I never did like electric blankets, now I have even more of a reason not to like them. Thank goodness the child was not hurt.

littlehud 07-28-2010 05:08 PM

Yikes. Electric blankets have always scared me. I would rather sleep under two or three quilts.

dkabasketlady 07-28-2010 05:09 PM

Thank goodness the little boy wasn't hurt!!! Quilts can be repaired or replaced, but children can't! I don't own an electric blanket, got rid of them years ago, but now I live in FL. so don't need it anyway. A quilt in the winter is all I need!!! Thanks for the warning!!

Kathy N 07-28-2010 05:11 PM

I lost a great aunt & uncle to an electric blanket fire. I've not used one since. They are scary.

sally's girl 07-28-2010 05:24 PM

Thank the Good LORD he is ok.....

CoyoteQuilts 07-28-2010 08:14 PM

I have heard that the poly would ignite, but didn't know it would do it this way. I guess my decision not to use poly batting in my quilts was a good one.....

earthwalker 07-28-2010 08:18 PM

Electric blankets are a total nightmare and I have no idea why they are still being made. We have a woollen underblanket with quite a thick pile...it can be used winter and summer, and is washable, a much healthier option.

Glad the small person was ok...a timely reminder for all still using these blankets.

walen 07-28-2010 08:22 PM

Wow, scary! I really do appreciate the warning. I will stick to piles of quilts, too! Thanks.

BellaBoo 07-28-2010 08:29 PM

Heating pads in the bed is just as bad. Heating pads are suppose to be used on top of the body not underneath. No weight on them at all. The newer electric blankets just warm, they don't get hot and they have fail safe features. The one I have shuts off if any weight is detected on the blanket. If my cat lays on the blanket it will turn off. It was special ordered and the company was bought out and the blanket is no longer being made. I wish I had bought a spare. If you like an electric blanket get the best one or don't use one at all.

Suzanne57 07-28-2010 09:27 PM

When I lived in Michigan I used an electric blanket but just to get the bed warm. Once the bed was warm, I shut off the blanket. I could keep the bed warm but not warm it up. I hated getting into a cold bed. By using it just long enough to warm up, I could use other blankets/quilts on top of it without worrying about fire.

amma 07-28-2010 09:52 PM

I am so happy to hear that he wasn't hurt!!
Thank you for the warning.

ranger 07-29-2010 03:32 AM

Thanks so much for sharing this. I didn't know that you weren't supposed to use them alone.

CarrieAnne 07-29-2010 03:38 AM

Wow, how scarry!

GrammaNan 07-29-2010 05:30 PM

Thank you for the warning! Tell your daughters thank you for their service to us and to our country.

Surfergirl 07-30-2010 04:01 AM

So glad the little boy is okay. I never used an electric blanket because I was afraid of them. Didn't know you couldn't use other blankets in combination with an electric blanket. This Quilting Forum is wonderful...we all learn so much.

mlaceruby 07-30-2010 04:10 AM

I have used an electric blanket for years with my quilts
but I always use cotton batting.
and the dog sleeps on the bed!
yikes will have to rethink this!
glad he wasn't hurt

ka9sdn 07-30-2010 04:14 AM

Never felt safe with electric blankets. Will stick with quilts besides they are much prettier.

ghostrider 07-30-2010 04:16 AM

That's why I never use poly batting, especially in children's quilts...it melts and sticks to the skin. Glad everyone is okay.

tmg 07-30-2010 05:25 AM

Thanks for the warning!

LindaR 07-30-2010 05:54 AM

wow...I sleep under an elec blanket and quilt all winter long but never leave it on....was the blanket on high??? never saw one get that hot...

ClairVoyantQuilter 07-30-2010 06:03 AM

wow . . .thanks for the warning. I don't sleep with one either . . .but was actually trying to talk my hubby into one since he prefers to turn the thermostat up to 81 degrees . . .yuk LOL Now will have to rethink my strategy before my skin and nasal passages dry up and blow away :)

AliceQ 07-30-2010 06:20 AM

God bless your daughters!

sandpat 07-30-2010 06:41 AM

Oh gosh....thank goodness he wasn't hurt and that this was the only damage. Its bad enough as is..but could have been sooo much worse! Thanks for posting!

Dagny 07-30-2010 06:50 AM

Thank you for the wake-up call. I got the message loud and clear.

betlinsmom 07-30-2010 06:56 AM

Thank you for sharing, and Praise the LORD little one is safe!! I hate electric blankets but I did not know about this danger!! I have always used a poly batting but now I must rethink this. My sister and bil sleep with an electric blanket and heating pads under a quilt I made for them with (you guessed it) a poly batt! N ow I need to call her and tell her STOP!!! I will make her another quilt to help her adjust!!

catrancher 07-30-2010 07:19 AM

I've been using electric blankets and electric matress pads my entire life. I've never had a problem. My guess is that the blanket was faulty, but I would hesitate to condemn all of them. Lots of things catch fire--space heaters, dishwashers, electrical outlets, heating pads, in general because they are faulty in some way.

If you are going to use an electric blanket, with or without other blankets or quilts, I would definitely read all the fine print on the labels and warnings. Personally, I will choose not to risk a fire by using an electric blanket. We all have to evaluate what level of risk we are willing to assume. I'll pre-warm my bed with rice bags and cuddle under quilts!

judithb 07-30-2010 08:18 AM

Ouch!
I quilt using an electric blanket when i got kitties. They love to kneed/knit and I was afraid they would cause an electrical short or bite the wire. Comfy quilts are so much safer.

Connie in Indiana 07-30-2010 09:32 AM

When my sons got out on there own I used to tell them to watch out for electric blankets! What I all ways here oh you allways about something that never happens will wait till I tell them now!!!!!
thanks for letting me know!

Jannie 07-30-2010 09:33 AM

I am a very cold person & can not get warm or stay warm, hence the electric blanket for me is a life saver. I also use a quilt on top of it. I find the new eblankets don't get as warm as the older ones did. I will think about this every time I turn my blanket on (now only use it in the winter instead of all summer long too).
