Bob Newhart played Ducky's predecessor. He was suffering from a form of dementia and the agents made a slide show about his life to help him remember the people in his past.

Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing to do for loved ones that are developing signs of that disease? Only print the pictures and names off and make a quilt for them? Pictures that said, "My daughter, Janie" or "My husband, Don" or even "My dog, Jasper."

That's what I was thinking about while I watched the show and just thought I'd share.

Maggiesmom 01-19-2011 09:12 AM

I think that is a great idea. A real memory quilt.

dakotamaid 01-19-2011 09:51 AM

My dad is in a home for severe dementia and we made him a scrap book with all of us kids, the grands, old friends, even many of mom, especially when they were younger. Many of the pics were of us when we were younger as that is how he seems to remember us. When we go to visit he always has that book out for us to look at with him. BTW, he is 98 and has had a full rich life. He was at one time the oldest, still licensed pilot in his home state.

svenskaflicka1 01-19-2011 09:55 AM

there is a performer/participant from the minnesota renaissance festival who is having extremely rapid memory loss, and he is a young man--possibly in his early 40s. the group has started a face page for him and his family, with photos, quotes, stories, etc. for him--much like the NCIS crew did. i think it is one of the nicest and best efforts i've ever seen. and the quilt idea would be wonderful--both memories, and something tangible to go with them--comfort that can be held and touched.

I thought it was a great idea, too. I thought Bob Newhart did a GREAT job acting (I sure hope it wasn't HIM!). I miss seeing him on tv! It was a sad but good show.

kbs 01-19-2011 10:23 AM

It was sad but I'm glad these shows use their popularity to showcase these issues. Some TV is so stupid there is nothing to gain from watching.

blzzrdqueen 01-19-2011 10:37 AM

I just saw this show for the very first time this week, catching reruns on USA...watched the new episode last night and it made me cry!

SO far I love the show, and am looking forward to catching up!

purplemem 01-19-2011 11:11 AM

I do NOT miss this show! It is my Tuesday night date!
I thought the episode was exceptional. Bob Newhart is one of the best actors around, and I have truly missed his dry sense of humor. I tape the episodes on USA and the marathons and have my own NCIS marathon when I can't sleep.

scowlkat 01-19-2011 02:01 PM

I am a fanatic about this show! My husband usually has control of the remote - with my blessing! - but even he knows that Tuesday is my night! I was the same way with ER (one of the greatest shows ever) and don't know what I will do if NCIS ever stops!

tealady 01-19-2011 03:47 PM

that would be a great thing to do for someone .

pookie ookie 01-19-2011 04:08 PM

I only saw the beginning but have it on DVR. I watch the show because Gibbs has the only decent haircut on TV. Old School.

Love Bob Newhart. My dad told me to be sure to watch it because Bob was on. Bob's never had decent hair but I love him anyway.

Love the idea of a memory book, quilt or wallhanging.

gmaybee 01-19-2011 07:17 PM

Raptureready, I never miss NCIS on Tuesdays and they have several episodes in a row on Wednesday nights I watch. That would be a great idea to make a memory quilt for someone with dementia. Last January my mom went into a care facility and I got busy and made her a quilt with Hummels on it, because she was a collector of them. She passed away in May, but the night before she passed I was feeding her ice cream to her. She got all emotional and said "I never thought my girls would be taking care of me like this". I told her that was what family was for. I thank God that she had her mind until the very end.

debbieumphress 01-19-2011 07:23 PM

I watched it too. And the next one. I did a book with pictures for my mom starting back in 1951 when she married my dad and up thru now. It was one with pictures on one side and a blank page to write on the other and I made notes. I cried when they played the program/pictures for him. My mom will be there soon enough. I love that show. COuld be why one of my kitties was Abbey Gibbs. LOL. I am working on a memory quilt next. I have almost all the pictures transferred to transfer sheets.

MaryJane, I am right there with you on this! I am glad to see the popular shows like this are addressing (in their own way) issues that are prevelant.

wow so do I! watching it now on USA - missed the first 1/2 last night but I am sure will be on again sometime. I think I like it with Ziva better than with Kate. What do you think?

cmg625 01-19-2011 07:53 PM

NCIS is my most favorite show. I watch it all the time. I like Ziva a lot. Kate was good, but they have been able to develop the character more with Ziva.

Jennifer, if you have USA network they do a lot of NCIS marathons. The show is great. I would recommend going to your local video rental place and rent them by the season. Start with season 1 and keep on going. They started off good and just keep getting better. My favorite show on television!

purplemem 01-20-2011 04:06 AM

I really like Ziva. And, boy can she sing! That is one talented actress.

I think my fav episode is when they went to Africa and rescued Ziva. My heart was in my throat the whole show.

Julie in NM 01-20-2011 04:50 AM

Love when there is a NCSI marathon cuz I have a sewing marathan. Dh knows I'm in love with Gibbs. Just love the show.

Miss Priss 01-20-2011 05:54 AM

Take your pictures to walmart and make one of those picture quilts. Not sure how its done but my friend received one from her daughter with all the family pictures. It is a beautiful quilt and the color is great. Total washable too.

granniegg 01-20-2011 05:57 AM

Thank you for expressing such a wonderful idea....yes, a devoted NCIS follower too. Church meetings are on Tuesday nites and Fr John knows to end it when we start rolling our eyes at him. When I read the Mitford series, I felt Bob Newhart as Fr. Tim

oldswimmer 01-20-2011 06:05 AM

I love NCIS too....one of my all time favorites! Everyone tells me my hubby he looks like Gibbs...because his hair is almost exactly the same, maybe a little more gray and about 5 years younger. But alas..hubby has a little more tummy...as do many of us! LOL

eimay 01-20-2011 06:15 AM

My nephew did that for my sister this past Christmas. He contacted those closest to my sister and asked for past photos as well as current. I asked him how it worked out (there are many miles between us). He said his dad told him, she enjoys looking at it, but doesn't remember anyone in the pictures, including him. Alz. is a horrible disease. You feel as though the person has died, but is still there. I think perhaps the photos, etc. would help in the earlier stages. If things only worked out like t.v.

amorerm 01-20-2011 08:50 AM

I did see and loved the way they made that for him. I've made memory quilts but I think one would look great layed out the way they did on the screen.

Grama Lehr 01-20-2011 08:51 AM

What a wonderful idea!!

We love NCIS. It was so neat to see Bob Newhart again on TV. The story left a few tears as this health issue can become all too real.

I also love this show. Have watched it since the beginning and now also the NCIS LA. My adopted son is an actor and was on the show when Kate was still there. I didn't know he was doing the show. He played an agent who was found in a car that had been bombed. So he had a lot of makeup to make him look banged up. He emailed me a picture - no words- of him in his makeup. I can't find the picture or I would include it but here is his head shot. BTW this say Mama Nell not hell.

I loved the show.My MIL has got dementia.Several months ago we found out that she had several blockages in her arteries and this was upstrupting the flow of blood to her brain which cause a lot of problems. This also brought on her dementia,I knew that it had gotten worse when she told me,as we were making up her bed, that she was glad I was there to help her because she could not remember how to do this simple task.We take things like memeroy for granted. Some times things have to slap us in the face to apperciate the things we still have. What they showed on NCIS was a way to help them remember but there will came a time when even those videos won't help and we just have to be there for our love ones who suffer from it.May God Bless those who can help those who are in need.

lillybeck 01-20-2011 11:50 AM

I think that would be a great idea. This is something that we have dealt with in our family and it is a very devastating thing to deal with.

sassey 01-20-2011 11:57 AM

I made a memory quilt for my mother in law when she first started having signs of alz. then I had everyone write a small note and sign their square. She really loved that quilt was burried with it I also wrote something about being wrapped in loving arms of your family in the center square.

On a happier note I made a crawling quilt for my niece I put on pictures of everyone holding her then backed this with a moving pad, her mother loved the idea of having the a safe clean place to learn to crawl. She would crawl to certain pictures and pat her favorite people

Oooooh I think I have a crush on your son!!!!

IBQUILTIN 01-20-2011 01:26 PM

Those kinds of quilts are becoming very popular. We made a picture album for my Mom with the opening page stating her name and address - including a recent picture. Then "My husband is:", " My children are" etc. It was a fun project, and she looked at it every day. Her dementia was not Alzheimers, but from a brain stem injury that finally just shut her little body down, one function at a time. Really a sad thing to watch happen to a loved one

amorerm 01-20-2011 01:42 PM

Love Abby...She's my fav. besides Gibbs of course. What a man. Do you know his wife is Pam Dawber from Mork and Mindy. They have been married for ever. Another reason I love him. A great husband and father and "a great man" all round.

He was also Ricky Nelsons brother-in law.

I always watch NCIS. Something I did years ago was to record my mother-in-law talking and have played it for our family. I keep wanting to record others but never get around to it.

Rann 01-20-2011 11:20 PM

When we had to put my aunt with Alzheimer's in an assisted living facility, we did her a collage of pix of each family member with their names. When she got where she could not talk, she would point to whomever, asking where they were. Sometime she remembered us and sometimes she broke our hearts by not remembering us. She is gone now and in a much better place. I always say that Alzheimer's is the worst thing I have ever had to deal with.

Fancy Nancy 01-20-2011 11:33 PM

My 94 year old mom lives with us and she has had Alzheimer's for about 10 years. She reached the point several years ago where I am sure she does not know I am her daughter or that my kids are her grandkids. Oddly tho, this does not bother us - we are just so happy she is still around. She doesn't talk anymore but gets excited and does laugh about things we do. She is interested in everything that goes on around her - likes to watch out the window all day, looks thru mags, plays with "toys" etc. We have to feed her and change her etc. Just lately she has been unable to stand so have to lift her from bed to chair and vv. I know most people think it is so sad, esp for the families, but we are not sad about it - it is just as it is and we can live with that. I really don't believe that she knows that she can't remember. She just knows what she knows. We don't take her not knowing us personally or the fact she can't remember things. As one of my kids said, they can't remember their real early years - when I fed them, changed them, learning to walk etc but it does not make them sad that can't remember that - so they don't see the dif. Lots of my friends no longer have a parent and I am just happy and feel blessed that she is still around. It is still her - just not with the her memory - but we still have our memories of her.

Didn't mean to go on so long but wanted to give my 2 cents I guess.
