Do any of you have names that you hated as a child? I am Katiebear online , but my real name is Martha Reaci after my two GM's. I always went as Reaci. It wasn't until I moved to Kentuckey from Colorado that people knew how to pronounce it. I guess it is an Applacihan SP? name and my GM was from Georgia. Nowadays unique names are in. but when I was growing up (late 50's to early 70's) my name was considerd weird. I still don't really like it, but I don't like Martha much better. My DD says since I am so Crafty and domestic that I am living up to my Martha ( as in Stewart) name. LOL.

Chasing Hawk 07-25-2010 05:46 PM

My given name is Robin. But my Aunt Joe always called me Nancy......LOL
My brother called me Prima Donna.
And my husband calls me......Baby

In grade school.....I was always asked where Batman was.

franie 07-25-2010 05:46 PM

Well I was teased about my real name and was so glad when I finally got nicks. I was called "francis the talking mule". I hated the teasing. And I hated my name being misspelled too.

Joanie2 07-25-2010 05:49 PM

Hi Katiebear. My online name is Joanie2 but I've always hated to be called Joanie because it made me feel like a little girl. Problem was that I was very tiny as a little girl. When my mother was angry with me she'd call me
Joan Lorraine and then I knew I was in trouble. My name is after my father JOhn, my mother ANita and my grandmother.
As I got older I disliked being called Joanie more and more.

sharon b 07-25-2010 06:18 PM

Not as a child but as an adult... My middle name is Guadalupe and at work they would call me Guadie or guacamole

marymc 07-25-2010 06:25 PM

Mary, in a catholic town. In grade school we had 18 girls five of which were named Mary and only 4 boys. I always dreamed of having a unique name! Of course thebn I went on to give my kids very comman names also. LOL

isnthatodd 07-25-2010 06:40 PM

My name is Cathie, and when I was in school there were always 2 or 3 more, who spelled their names much more interestingly than I did (Cathy until I was about 12). I hated it then, wanted to be Bobbie or Candy or Trinket or some such. My husband loves my name, and now I don't mind it.

minnow895 07-25-2010 07:02 PM

my name is patricia i hate it when people call me pattie my grand
ma called me pattie ann

charismah 07-25-2010 08:01 PM

Well I grew up with a name ..Charisma. Who wants to live up to that? I don't have alot of problems with people mispronouncing it now...but all during school ...I could always tell when a new teacher came to my name on roll call! But I gues syou get used to it and it doesn't effect you anymore.

CarrieAnne 07-25-2010 08:13 PM

Aw, I think your name is pretty! My last name was a pain! Its REIN, so they always pronounced it like rain, when it should be like rhine!!!!!!!! Even the teachers would say, oh, its reining, lol, I used to be so embarraced!

littlehud 07-25-2010 08:16 PM

My real name is Patrice. I loved that it was different but every teacher would look at the name and end up calling me Patricia. It always upset me.

ranger 07-26-2010 01:43 AM

I HATED my name...Edwina. Not too many people around with a name like that. I used my middle name when I was growing up.

Mamagus 07-26-2010 02:06 AM

True story... I wasn't christened until I was 9 months old and the minister looked at the name my mom had written down and said NO WAY. That's a nickname not a REAL name. By this time I was used to being called Lori and they wanted to keep it. SO he said it could be lengthened to something more appropriate like Loriann, Lorilynn... but my mother in all her infinite wonder and wisdom stuck "ta" on my name, so officially I was Lorita (rhymes with Lolita). Can we please have a chorus of laughter here!?
NO ONE could pronounce it and I was always Lori to everyone who knew me anyway! So when I was married my husband helped me go through the process of changing it to Lori. Cost all of 25.00 and we had to fill out a few forms! I highly recommend it!

I love that name!! My little cousin was/is named Carla Patrice and I always thought Patrice was such a beautiful name. Still do :D
My name was pretty common in school. Of course I hated it. Don't know too many ppl who liked their names, hair color, etc. I got to like it all as I got older. Who cares?? Besides, my Dad named me and that made it special !! My middle name is for my Italian grandmother, Margharita, his Mother, and that makes me happy too!!

I was also named Mary and went to a Catholic school. My parents who named me Mary always called me by my middle name, Renee. Why? Who knows. EVERY year at school, on the first day, I'd have to explain to the teacher that yes, my first name is Mary but I go by Renee.

Fast forward to adulthood. I married a Smith. So now my driver's license says Mary Smith. Talk about dull. When I used to have to fly to New York frequently on business, I'd always be pulled aside as being on the 'no fly' list. I always told them, if I were a terrorist I would certainly come up with something more exciting than Mary Smith. The problem was, the sign at the gate showing a person holding their ID - the name on that ID was Mary Smith.

hazeljane 07-26-2010 09:18 AM

I was Peggy as a child, which I hated. I was named after my grandmother, Margaret. And she was an Irish servant. Her employers called her Maggie, without bothering to ask what she wanted to be called (Margy) and she really hated it, because it was a 'servant name', so she made sure I was Peggy.

I changed to Maggie when I went to college- I don't think there are too many associations with that name now. Most of my friends call me Mags, and my DH calls me magdelaina, when he's feeling romantic.

Margaret Mary is a total nun name, and I was frequently called "Sister Margaret Mary".

bj 07-26-2010 09:34 AM

I actually loved my name...Betty Jean...growing up. In a small, West Texas town, everyone knew me and I was happy. When I went to college, profs et al called me Betty. Went to work, bosses and coworkers called me Betty. I hated that. So, I started going by BJ, which I like. My family, in-laws, and old friends all still call me Betty Jean.

Grinster 07-26-2010 10:09 AM

My name is Mina Jessie. I was named after my 2 grandmother's (both had passed before I was born). To this day it is always mispronounced and during my 7th grade my teacher called me Myra the whole year. Since I have grown up and learned more about my grandmothers I have more or less embraced the names because of the women I was named for must have been very strong to live during times when women had to be very strong. Mina was born in Minnesota and widowed with a 5 & 7 year old. Jessie died in childbirth in NW Pennsylvania.

raptureready 07-26-2010 12:56 PM

I always went by my middle name of Alfreda (long e sound) and in school I hated being teased about it. Remember Captain Kangaroo with Alfred the Airsick Eagle? Fred Flintstone? Red Skelton's Freddie the Freeloader? In the third grade I came home from school crying. An older cousin was there visiting. He caringly put me on his lap, gently put his arm around me, wiped my tears away, then told me that if I'd stop getting upset they'd stop making fun of my name. That dirty dog lied. The only thing that happened was that I quit minding it. Even my nieces and nephews to this day call me Aunt Fred.

My name is Christina Elizabeth after both my GMs... but will never answer to Tina! I hated that nickname from the first time I heard it. Generally I'm called Chris. Growing up my sister and I shared the same nickname of Loosh (for our last name of Lucier). Nowadays I jokingly call her LooshChange because she's always worked in a bank and she calls me LooshThreads because of all the threads she find clinging to my clothes.

GrammaNan 07-26-2010 07:41 PM

My first name is Sally. It was already old fashioned when I was born. I was named after an aunt. It seemed that all famous Sally's were negative, like Dirty Sally, Mustang Sally etc. I was always known as Nan or Sally Ann at home so as not to confuse me with my aunt. I was called Sally at school. I now use my nick-name Nan for on-line and quilting.

Lady Shivesa 07-26-2010 07:53 PM

My name is Alexis Ann. I never thought much of my name, never got tease for it either - but mostly because I was homeschooled I think. Everyone's always called me Lexie (a variety of spellings) or Lex. One or two have called me Alex or Alexandria (which I didn't like).

My dad took to calling me Lulu sometimes when my little sister was young and couldn't say my name - she'd call me Lulu and it kinda stuck for my dad. It makes me feel special when he calls me that, I don't know why!

And finally, my maiden name is 'Boellner' which was ALWAYS pronounced wrong. It's actually pronounced 'bell-ner' as the o is silent. I constantly had to correct people who thought it was 'bowlner.' :P

But when I got married that all changed. Hunter is a nice, easily pronouncable last name.

Although Alexis Hunter kinda sounds like a teacher's name to me. :P

'Alexis Hunter' kinda sounds like the heroine in a romance novel, to me!

daniellern76 07-27-2010 05:03 AM

I always liked my name, Danielle, after my father Daniel. My mom's first name is MaryLee, dad is Daniel Lee, so we all have the middle name "Lee". I named my son Caleb Daniel, to follow that mini-tradition. Then I named my daughter Malia which is hawiian for Mary for my mom. Then Trinity just came along, LOL! Caleb says if he ever has a daughter he's going to name her Danielle. He's 11, so I'm sure he will change his mind by then!!

justwannaquilt 07-27-2010 06:27 AM

My first name is Danielle, middle is Corin (K-or-in).
My Grandfather (dads dad) always called my "Dingy".
My brother has always called me "Ditsy"(which I am not my sister holds that title)

Everyone else has always called me Danni. UNTIL I met my husband then suddenly EVERYONE except my family started calling me Danielle. Even friends that had ALWAYS called me Danni.

My youngest sons name is Liam, I get asked ALL the time if it is short for William. I didn't even think about the name William before giving him his name.

ShowMama 07-27-2010 07:50 AM

When I was born, my dad told my mother he didn't care what she named me, but he wanted to call me Joy. So, she picked Gloria Joyce. All my life, my whole family has called me Joy. When I started to school, they wouldn't let me use Joy as they said it was a nickname, so I went by Joyce. But of course all school, employment, and health records are under Gloria Joyce so I've been called Gloria a lot too.

I am really glad though that my mother didn't have her first pick......Debra Ann! Her sister had a baby three months before I was born and named HER Debra Ann. Thank goodness! All through elementary and high school there were at least 4 girls in my grade alone named Debra, and we had to delineate them as Debra Ann, Debra Lynn, Debra Sue, and Debbie. Plus there were other Debras in other grades. I was so glad not to be named Debra Ann.

b.zang 07-27-2010 08:05 AM

When I was a child I didn't like the fact that my name means "foreign, stranger". Then my mother told me that a woman we knew had changed her name from Barbara to Caroline and I was insulted that she no longer wanted the name Barbara. Now my oldest friends and family call me Barbara and my newer acquaintances call me Barb. I grew up thinking it was an unusual name, but widened my world and discovered it's quite common :)

aliaslaceygreen 07-27-2010 12:28 PM

I was one of 16 Patricia's in high school (and one Patrice!) My grandmother wouldn't let my parents name me Patti-Anne, but my dad always called me that.
Nowadays I am Trish or Lacey, lol!

My daughter has a unique name because I hated being so common!

frogella 07-27-2010 01:35 PM

My name is Carmen Renee'. My aunts and uncles call me renee which they say as ren nee. My brother calls me Harley because he says my butt is as big as a HD wide glyde (lol). Never liked my name, but don't dislike it enough to change it. Could be worse!

Jerrie 07-27-2010 01:41 PM

My name is Jerrie Lewis ( Jerry on Birth certificate ) every one during childhood called me.... Jerry Lee Lewis

kwiltkrazy 07-27-2010 01:44 PM

My first name is Thelma, I go by my middle name< Lucinda, I fit it much better. Both of them were my gm's names. No one calls me Thelma, except the Dr. office, since both my Gm and Gpa are gone now to them I was always Thelma Lou. Liked that even worse than Thelma. But, they said it out of love, cause GM was Thelma Louise.

AkAngel 07-27-2010 02:01 PM

My name is Muriel (mother's middle name) which I hated growing up for a few reasons. One I just didn't like it, then I grew up during the 60's when Muriel Cigars were popular and I hated it when some one would walk by and say "just pick one up and smoke her sometime" which was their theme line. Also people have a difficult time remembering it so mom would say if you can remember Cereal than you'll think of Muriel...aarrggh, but what was worse was my maiden name was Smart, just try to live that down especially when "Get Smart" was a hit series at the time. I was always "Get Smart", Not So Smart, or Not So's Kid.
Then when I got married it changed to Toole (e) is silent
so now I tell people I'm a smart toole... We call the house the Toole Shed and every once in awhile I will pick up the phone and answer "Tooleshed, Lady Hammerhead speaking" it throws people off abit. My husband's handle when we had C.B's was Hammerhead and the car was the Toolebox Mobile ofcourse.
Muriel

seamstome 07-27-2010 02:30 PM

OMG! What a small world. Kwiltkrazy...my real name is Lucinda and I HATE it. Im glad somebody likes it. Up here in the North, You hardly ever hear it except for villains in soap operas. I was named IN A CONTEST. Lucinda was my great grandmother's name. She was from WV.

I go by Cindy. You can always tell when people dont know me they will call me Linda, Lucinda, Lucy or just stutter.

kwiltkrazy 07-27-2010 09:47 PM

That's funny. I was always call Thelma, then when I moved away from home, I told everyone my name was Lucinda, then they would try and shorten it and I told them it was Lucinda or Miss Lieder, they called me Lucinda, but my dear hubby calls me 'CindaLu and I love it. Now I don't even respond to Thelma, except at the Dr. office. I keep telling them they can call me Lucinda, but they never remember.

Rhonda 07-27-2010 10:08 PM

I never had a nickname except for my grandpa who nicknamed all his kids and grandkids.Mine was Punky. don't know why. Noone has ever called me Ron or Ronnie. I would have hated it.

My son however I named Nathan, He had a teacher that wouldn't call him Nathan. He insisted he had to call him by his full legal name of Nathaniel. I did NOT name my son Nathaniel. It is just Nathan! But that man refused to listen to me! LOL

My youngest is named after his dad Glen Wayne. so he is Glen Wayne II We usually call him little Glen or my MIL dubbed him GW when he was little. I tend to call him GDub. Which he now hates! He is now six ft 3 and we call him Little Glen! His yr old has to look up a long way and he doesn't think daddy looks so Little! LOL

Reviving this thread:

Sorry ladies, most of you that hate your names. I totally love them(Charisma> HaHa!, awesome)...I grew up with a unique name ( Dene'- pronounced like Renee') and although I hated no one remembering how to say it and teachers stumbling over it..I did like it ok..
I never heard of anyone with the name while growing up - Although, I've heard it on several younger kids recently..
My Dad told me he made it up cause he didn't want to name me Rene like my mother wanted. However, I think there was a movie star back then named Dene Merrill( and my last name is Merrill)..I think they just added the accent mark lol

I am curious, Those of you with more unique names...How did that carry over when naming your children?.. With me, I Haaad to have something a little unique lol.. My poor son was born during my harliquen romance phase and he came verrry close to being named Gunner Six or Dillon Slaide(with a long A)- laughing ::..Thankfully, hubby liked names like Bruce so a compomise was in order = Devin..
I named my daughter Kearstin, my poor angel passed a way..But, I still remember my father never remebering how to pronounce her name..Hence, to him, she was addressed as " lil stinkpot" lol
