So sorry for your loss! When my sons were young they also went outside for ice cream and thought the door was closed.
Went out the next day to get something for dinner to find the door slightly ajar -- enough to spoil, along with tons of other meats, 3 large turkeys I had gotten on sale for a large Thanksgiving dinner I had planned. It was a hard expensive lesson. I finally decided after the second time that I didn't need a large freezer any more. They are now grown and gone and I now have a smaller refrigerator with freezer in my garage. I hope your insurance can help. Good Luck.

What a bummer!! I have a chest freezer so the door closes almost automatically. Of course sometime someone will pile something too high and it doesn't close completely and I end up will a bunch of ice build-up, but no one has ever left if open!!!

Dang it, I feel your pain, my frig was out on Sunday. I had melted ice cream, meat, everything in the frig. PTL I had a spare and got it in right away.
