Dishwasher recommendations

We are in the process of changing out our kitchen cabinets and decided we would update the dishwasher. What suggestions can you ladies make ..... do you have a brand that actually gets the dishes clean? without having to "prewash" the dishes. Any help you can give will be helpful.

Boston1954 11-01-2017 06:58 AM

I actually wash mine by hand, but I believe that Whirlpool is a noted brand. I would say go to the store and take a look. Ask questions, and don't be afraid to say "I'm just looking". Do they deliver....will they take away the old one and how much will it be...That kind of thing.

SusieQOH 11-01-2017 07:05 AM

My sister just got new appliances- all LG and she loves them.

dunster 11-01-2017 08:14 AM

I replaced with LG at my house in Oregon. It was so quiet, and it sang a song to me when it finished. It took me a while to figure out where the music was coming from.

francie yuhas 11-01-2017 08:18 AM

I love my Bosch....gets dishes clean, very quiet, just need to scrap stuff off dishes.....no prewashing

Trisher 11-01-2017 08:28 AM

I love my Bosch too. It has a stainless steel interior which always looks clean. It uses a minimum amount of water which is good for our septic field. Dishes come out spotless. It does take almost 3 hours to complete a cycle though.

cashs_mom 11-01-2017 01:50 PM

I've had 2 of the top of the line Sears Elite dishwashers and have been really happy with them. Stainless inside and washes really well. I am NOT good and doing more than just rinsing the dishes before I put them in.

Stitchnripper 11-01-2017 01:54 PM

We are very pleased with our Bosch. Going on 2.5 years. Very quiet. The instruction manual says not to prewash - something about the food residue interacting with the dishwasher soap for a better result.

suern3 11-01-2017 03:25 PM

We bought a Bosch from Lowes in July. It was on sale plus free installation. The dishes are completely clean without "prewashing". We remove junks, of course, although it has a soft food disposer. I use the automatic clean and extra dry settings. It takes about 2 and 1/2 hours. Normally run it at bedtime, anyway, so doesn't matter. Very quiet, especially compared to our old one!

KLO 11-01-2017 04:03 PM

I had to replace a GE and ended up with an LG that looks very similar to what I had. And just an FYI: I started the GE as I was hand washing some things I don't put in the washer and while I was still standing there, it started smoking. Turned it off and try starting it again and smoke started pouring out again. Yikes! DH looked inside the door wiring and we could see where the wires had started to fry. I am so thankful that we didn't (and never do) start the machine and leave the house or go to bed. We are pretty sure that a fire would have started in the machine if we have left it running.

Tiggersmom 11-01-2017 04:44 PM

I have a Maytag and have been very pleased with it. I always use the potwasher , high temperature wash and no dry.

Sandra in Minnesota 11-01-2017 04:53 PM

I think with the new dishwashers, scraping is all that is needed when putting them in the dishwasher. I tried leaving dried-on chili on a couple of my dishes, and it worked fine. My washer is about 20 years old! I think the key is the dishwashing powder and the drying agent. Cascade is great, but expensive.

tranum 11-01-2017 07:17 PM

In my opinion, all new dishwashers do the job, or they couldn’t compete. 4 years ago I got brushed stainless steel appliances and I HATE them for water spots and streaks. Our Granddaughter got slate, it doesn’t show. The inventor of black stove tops isn’t on my friendly list either.

Tiggersmom 11-01-2017 07:21 PM

Where was my brain????????????? I said earlier Mayatag, but I just double checked and its a Whirlpool same as my refrigerator...........Sorry, but I really do like it and use it daily, along with those tablets that have the little ball in them.

zozee 11-01-2017 08:01 PM

Bosch. It's so quiet you can't hear it, so they put a red light on the bottom of it that shines onto the floor to let you know it's on. It has a speed cycle for 60 minutes and a 2 hour one, but I've never needed that longer one. The dishes come out really clean.

canmitch1971 11-01-2017 08:12 PM

I did some research and bought a Kenmore Elite from Sears..... it is so quiet and gets dishes very clean....I love it

patski 11-01-2017 09:05 PM

Love my Kitchen Aid, it is soooooo quiet

illinois 11-02-2017 03:03 AM

A dealer suggested that one thing that really helps is to run hot water from the tap before starting the dishwasher if it is is on the same water line. That way the dishwasher has the hottest water from the beginning of the cycle.

NJ Quilter 11-02-2017 03:41 AM

I would definitely not recommend the mid-range of KitchenAid. The silly thing is definitely quiet but we have had nothing but issues with it since it was purchased. Brain was replaced at least once. Now when it gets cranky we have to re-set the circuit breaker for that appliance before it will start again.

It does have a 'food disposer' incorporated so no pre-washing needed per se. It takes forever to complete a cycle but I think that is the norm now since everything is 'low water usage'. It gets dishes clean but we also have very hard water so have inherent problems due to that issue.

Our dealer - like illinois' - also recommended to run the tap water until it is at it's hottest before starting dishwasher as well for the same reasons.

Rennie 11-02-2017 04:10 AM

While I won't recommend a brand because we can all get lemons, I WILL say that we bought one of the above mentioned brands at Lowes. We did not understand that the brand did not have a heater in it but dried the dishes with only a fan. Yes it was very quiet and the dishes were clean - but never completely dried! BUT -- what we did like is that Lowes has that 30 day return/exchange policy if you are not happy, and we utilized it to exchange ours for a different brand that does heat dry the dishes. So kudos to Lowes AND be sure to ask about how the dishes get dried. It is a big expense to end up being unhappy about...

Reba'squilts 11-02-2017 04:10 AM

We had a kitchen aide many years ago and it did not do well with our well water. Then we got an LG and the dishes came out beautifully clean!!! Last year we redid our kitchen and because we needed a counter depth refrigerator and a downdraft stove we went to the kitchen aide. The dishwasher makes the dishes sparkle. The downdraft is sad because ....aqua clean is a horrible joke The fridge is way smaller then the Electrolux we used to have. BUT! Everything matches and fits in and I am happier!! Always a silver lining!!!

paoberle 11-02-2017 04:11 AM

I bought replaced my very old dishwasher with a Whirlpool dishwasher about 9 years ago. I bought what I could afford that had the features that I wanted. I live alone so the dishwasher gets run about every 4-5 days. I do not rinse unless there are large pieces of food, so dishes sit with dried oatmeal and other assorted food residue on them. I use Walmart brand of dishwasher powder and the high temperature wash every time (I do not dry) and my dishes come out clean every time.

MaggieLou 11-02-2017 05:04 AM

I'm partial to Whirlpool. I've had several and they do a good job and seem to hold a lot. The house we're in now had a Frigidaire and I hate it. It has a spout in the center of the top rack and limits what you can put in the rack. It does clean good but the center spout is a PITA. I usually start it at bedtime but a nice feature on any dishwasher is the delay start.

Lyncat 11-02-2017 05:58 AM

Bosch is amazing! I also like the little top rack for silverware.

mopec 11-02-2017 09:05 AM

Maytag is now Whirlpool but still use the name Maytag. I bought new Maytag dishwasher and electric stove to replace my old Maytags about three years ago. Whirlpool had cheapened the racks and functions on both so much. I was disappointed. I replaced because I wanted the stainless and gave my white stove to my daughter. Would I go back to Maytag(Whirlpool) again, I'm not sure, but I did love the old ones.

vschieve 11-02-2017 09:06 AM

Was in BestBuy and really liked the Bosch and the KitchenAid, but in conversation with the rep, learned that Bosch does not have the internal heater for drying, and KitchenAid does. He said after Bosch cycle done, you will need to wipe of a few water drips from the dishes, but the KitchenAid not.

madamekelly 11-02-2017 10:15 AM

I have a GE that is 15 years old, and still gets the dishes clean as long as they are scraped off. I buy the inexpensive detergent from big box store, and only have to rewash the occasional dish DH forgets to scrape. Mine has options for different loads types, and drying options as well, it will even skip the dry cycle if I want to save electricity.

leighway 11-02-2017 10:28 AM

I see so many on here have recommended Bosch. I have had 2 TWO! Bosch dishwashers from Loew's and each died after about 3-4 years...now, these dishwashers are a bit too expensive to have to keep replacing them!! We bought a Maytag, on the recommendation of the Lowe's salesman and it's been a dream come true...and I will also say that we bought a maintenance contract with this one. I will never buy a Bosch again, though I dearly loved the features and small bits of engineering that made it a pleasure to use. But I like a dw to actually work when I buy it! silly me.

Jane Quilter 11-02-2017 11:37 AM

Between myself and 2 adult daughters we have owned them all.....But the top of the line Bosch is unbelievable by comparison to all the brands we have owned. So quiet, I don't know it is on. So clean, and I don't prewash/prerinse. I do scrape food chunks off for my chickens, but my hubby just drops his dish on counter and it might harden before I move it to the dishwasher for scrubbing. It has a great 3rd top tray for spatulas, and small what nots that I now can't live without. The cycle is 2 hours and 18 minutes....but it is so quiet, I don't care. I have had mine for over 10 years, and I will replace it with another Bosch the moment it decides to quit working. ( I have not had to replace a wheel or bracket or anything on this workhorse.)

Tothill 11-02-2017 11:55 AM

I have a very old store brand dishwasher (from a store that went out of business 20 years ago), that I bought second hand about 16 years ago and it works just fine. Yes it is noisy, but the cycle is short and the dishes are clean.

Oscar and Penny., the dogs, do a pretty good job of prewashing the dishes. I do not use the heat setting, when the wash stops I open the door, pull the racks and give them a shake. Only the odd plastic items does not dry completely, but it is dry by the time my son unloads.

I do not understand the need for a stainless steel interior. Mine is blue plastic, it is clean, there are no stains.

Every so often I think it would be nice to have a quieter machine, but not enough for me to put up cash.

Oh and my appliances do not match.

cathyvv 11-02-2017 12:02 PM

I use the just-soiled dinner napkins to wipe the leftover food off a plate directly into the trash. No rinsing required and the dishes come out clean. I never do pots and pans in the dishwasher.

As for purchasing a dishwasher, the last one I bought was a scratch and dent from Sears. It was very attractively priced, not a lot of features, but does clean the dishes. If I were looking for one now, I'd do some research online, look at reviews and so on, and then pick the least expensive dishwasher that meets my needs and has good reviews.

Mariah 11-02-2017 12:21 PM

We had always had Maytag w. washers and loved them. A year ago, we went to a Bosch. Love it, except any little thing will stop it from washing. The girls online said the dishes move around and that is what shuts it off. So, I got the book out and that helps.
Love it except for that. Dishes are always clean, it is quiet and doesn't use much water.
Those who also said they have Bosch,--if you can tell me if you have trouble with it shutting off when the dishes touch each other, ect, please let me know what you do to stop that when loading it. Thanks!!
Mariah

I'm glad someone else does this. My mother always told me it was better to run the water so that it's hot from the start and it would get the dishes cleaner. I always have and it does seem to help.

We changed to the Bosch DW. Made a big difference for the dog, the Bosch was much quieter which poor Maggie found much more to her liking. Can't help you with the clean question, I always rinse the debris off dishes. It's my Samsung refrigerator I am disappointed with.

Jingle 11-02-2017 05:05 PM

We don't need or want a dishwasher. Just two of us and it is faster and easier to wash and dry by hand.

My Daughter finally got one and she loves it. She is sold on LG appliances.

kjdavis4 11-02-2017 05:28 PM

Kenmore Elite is very quiet and gets dishes clean.

bergalex99 11-03-2017 02:52 AM

Bosch gets my vote as well. The first few times I used it I would have to stand by it and listen very closely to see if it was actually running. I hope this thing lasts forever.

sylviasmom 11-03-2017 08:05 AM

Do no buy a Bosch!! Whirlpool/Maytag, same company, but very good products. My husband picked the Bosch, which I hate because while it does wash the dishes, it does not rinse them well, so then I have to hand rinse them. I know, I should be having the hubby do them. Dealer and Bosch are in agreement, water pressure is too low. Had the water company send a man out to check the problem and all he found was that the water valve was not turned on all the way. He suggested we replace all the pipes. Yikes. Problem still exist.

mac 11-03-2017 08:32 AM

I just purchased a Kitchenaid a couple of weeks ago and hope I didn't make a mistake. Our last Whirlpool didn't last very long.

I did a lot of research on dishwashers, including going to Consumers Report magazine about dishwashers. In the end, I was just as confused as when I started. Whether you get the one with all the bells and whistles or you get a midrange dishwasher, they all had their problems.

Considering that lemons pop up in all brands of dishwashers, it is really like picking a 'pig-in-a-poke.' So I am just going to keep my fingers crossed and hope I made a good decision.

crafty pat 11-03-2017 10:53 AM

My last one was a Whirlpool now I have a Maytag. Both are good. I had a bad G E never again Have had Kenmore that was good. Have had several as we moved so much as a Army wife. Like the Whirlpool and Maytag the best.
