Hosta 07-30-2011 01:03 PM

we went too Maryland to my son's for a week I went to bed with a headache on Monday and don't remember anything for the next three days. My husband said I was talking all weird dropping things they made me use a sippy cup cause I kept dropping cups. after three days I started remembering the day but it was off and on. went to the dr when we got home he said he couldn't do any tests because we have no insurance but I had no symptoms of a stroke. I still have no memory of anything of those three days. Has this ever happened to any of you?

isnthatodd 07-30-2011 01:07 PM

Hosta, is your avatar a quilt you made? It's absolutely beautiful!!

hannajo 07-30-2011 01:09 PM

I hope you stay well.

I know the same thing happened to my grandmother when she was having trouble regulating her blood pressure. I think it happened when the doctor was trying to figure out the right combo/dose of meds for her. I hope the doc at least checked your blood pressure.

quiltingcandy 07-30-2011 01:11 PM

Wow it does sound like you had a transient ischemic attack (TIA). The fact that it lasted 3 days is very scary. Is there some county health clinic you can go to? It is possible this can be helped by medication. If it should happen again, they should take you to an ER while it happens and not wait for 3 days. Insurance or not, you can end up severely disabled.

bj 07-30-2011 01:25 PM

Something like that happened to my friend and hers was a mild stroke.

harrold48 07-30-2011 01:25 PM

Morning, have never had your problem, thankfully. Do not know what your health system is like but surely your doctor could have done blood tests etc on you. Has your parents/siblings ever had major health problems in the past? I really feel that you need more investigation about what caused this glitch in your life.
Take care and never wait 3 days to seek medical help.
Stay well.

luvstitches 07-30-2011 01:40 PM

I'm sorry this happened to you. I always have strange quirks that happen to me and then they clear up on their own and no one can explain them.
Do go the ER the next time this happens.

meemersmom 07-30-2011 01:51 PM

Glad you're feeling better now, but please, please, please don't ever wait if this happens again. As a matter of fact, have someone call 911 right away. If you go to an ER on an ambulance, you go to the front of the line, especially with symptoms like what you described. Treat first, ask questions later. All hospitals are obligated by law to evaluate, treat, and stabilize you, regardless of your insurance status. A private hospital will then try to transfer you to a public facility if you have no insurance. Public hospitals all have indigent funds, or will work with you on reducing your bill to something you can afford, or setting up a payment plan at the very least. Your health is too important to just wait and see what happens. I don't mean to scare you, but you were lucky this time. If you look around, you can find a facility with a Partners in Prevention program which provides, free of charge, routine health and screening services for women with no insurance or who are unable to pay. Please explore these options!!!

nativetexan 07-30-2011 01:54 PM

go to the ER and sit there. every body else does.
you do need to be checked out.

Painiacs 07-30-2011 02:00 PM

Yep. Go to ER!!

You should have a county Public Health where you live. They serve people without insurance. Get in touch with them and have a check up. Hope you get well.

sewmuchmore 07-30-2011 02:18 PM

Look you need to take care of yourself. Call 911 they have to take you. Glad you are better. Please don't take any chance with your health.

thimblebug6000 07-30-2011 02:32 PM

The TIA's can be very scary, but in many cases no lasting results, thankfully. I think they can be brought on by stress (notice I say "I think") that's just from witnessing my elderly aunt have to experience these things. She would try to pick something up & crash...onto the floor it went...the Dr. said bring her in immediately....I did....more than 2 hours later he finally had time to look at her....by then....alot of the weakness had disappeared. It's scary but.... many years later when she passed, it had nothing to do with the mini strokes (TIA)

Not if it's a stroke. Strokes are bleeding in the brain, and if you thin the blood with asprin, you're going to have more issues.

arimuse 07-30-2011 05:49 PM

oh, hosta, I feel for you - no ins. Its hard to get a straight ans from a dr w/o ins, even in an er. You really do need to find out what happened - this is so not normal. Did this ever happen before??, did it evern happen to anyone on your side of the family?? Is there someone to be with you at home, so youre not there alone?? are you moving around ok, walking, holding things, do you feel "odd" when you wake up, or thru the day or at the end of the day??
write notes, very simple bullets so when you can get to a dr you can read everything and give him a copy and tell him to pls keep it w/ your chart. sharet

There are two types of stroke.
One is from bleeding and the other is from a blood clot.
Get the correct treatment.

kacklebird 07-30-2011 08:14 PM

Sounds like something that could be serious. I agree with the others to go to the ER or call a local clinic to see if they have a sliding scale system where they will rate how much your visit will be. I think you need to be seen by a neurologist asap. Take care and let us know how you are doing.

scowlkat 07-30-2011 08:36 PM

Glassquilt is correct about strokes. My husband had a stroke when he was 40 and it was a ruptured blood vessel. However, after rupturing, it formed a clot so he will be on an aspirin daily for the rest of his life. Fortunately, he recovered probably 98% and only has problems with cognition (finding the right words or understanding written directions). My hubby just turned 56. I worked at a hospital at that time doing transcription but had seen enough to know we needed to get to the hospital quickly.

burnsk 07-30-2011 08:47 PM

Oh my goodness. So sorry this happened. Do you have migraines? This has happened to my nephew and he has suffered from migraines his whole life. He has had this happen to him several times but I don't think they lasted for as long a time as yours. I will ask him.

Lynnc 07-30-2011 08:50 PM

I use to have migraines. I remember missing a whole evening. I know I went to Kmart because I found a bag of stuff. Other than that I have no memory of that whole evening. But migraines, at least mine did, had symptoms like a stroke does.
After my heart surgery I don't have migraines any more. .Hurray, Hurray.
I hope you are well.

Stitchit123 07-30-2011 09:22 PM

Before my transplant I was like that My kidneys were in Distress and I ended up with an Ammonia Overload through out my entire system Dr put me on Lasix and inceased my WATER intake to a gallon a day til the excess fluids were flushed out of my kidneys so they could function normally again IF you ever experience any thing like this again GO to the ER immediately Don't worry about $$-- YOU are more important If my MIL didn't take me when she did I would have died at any moment Please don't shrug off warning signs like these The risks are to high Let a Dr do the diagnosing he's better educated

wanda lou 07-30-2011 10:52 PM

Go to the nearest emergency room when this happens!

merchjag 07-31-2011 04:20 AM

that certainly is not normal-the doc should have at least sent you for an mri or cat scan-sounds like TIA to me-you do need to be medically worked up to find out what the problem is

christina d 07-31-2011 04:55 AM

That is scary it could have been alot of things your health is important and you should find a way of getting tests done and finding out what it was so you can prevent it from happening again Iam sure there must be somewhere you will be able to go where they will treat you at a low cost.I hope you are better and it doesnt happen again

Buckeye Rose 07-31-2011 05:03 AM

Here is a quick guide to the symptoms of a stroke. And please, the next time you have an episode like that, call 911 or you may not be so lucky.

REMEMBER FAST

F=Face--ask the person to smile. If one side of the face appears crooked or drooping this person may be having a stroke
A=Arms--ask the person to lift both of his or her arms in the air--if he or she has difficulty with one arm this too might be a sign that this person is having a stroke
S=Speech--ask the person to speak. If his or her words are slurred or they are unable to speak, they might be having a stroke
T=T is for time. If any of the above symptoms are present you must call 911 immediately in order to make sure that this person reaches the hospital FAST.

Buckeye Rose 07-31-2011 05:07 AM

Please do some research into free or low cost medical treatment. There is help out there for those of us who don't have insurance. It may be just a migraine, but it could be something else that requires medication to control. Don't put your life at risk (or someone else's...what if this had happened while driving a car?)get treatment!

patchsamkim 07-31-2011 05:21 AM

If this happens again, please go get yourself checked out..what happened is not normal...if it happens a second time, call 911 and you will be seen and tested...something has to have caused this to happen.

edensgaite 07-31-2011 05:22 AM

hope you're feeling better

Hosta, I hope that you are feeling better and this never happens to you again. Your family must have been very frightened. I also live in the Maryland/Pennsylvania area and the last 3 weeks the heat and humidity here has been brutal. I know myself I don't feel well in all this heat, even inside with the air conditioner going. Plesse try to find a way to have some medical tests done. If it is blood pressure a very inexpensive pill can get that taken care of in most cases. It is so sad that in this country where so many have so much, that a person has to go without medical care and tests that they need. We need change in this country very badly. Good luck and please take care of yourself.

Go to the doctor. Six years ago I was watching a movie on TV and my grand son was on my computer and when movie was over I felt funny and told my grandson to "catch me if I fall] I knew something was wrong. I headed for the bathroom and on the way hollered at my husband who was in living room to take me to hospital that something wasn't quite right to make story short I had a TIA. I guess one thing I am a retired nurse so I new to get to hospital immediately when things don't "add up" Time makes a difference. I still have times of short member but if I stopped and think it comes back to me.

I've had a day like that when I had my stroke in 2006. Dr said I probably had been having small strokes for awhile and just didn't realize it. Please be careful and take care of yourself. Hugs... :) :D

decky 07-31-2011 06:47 AM

My sister had something similar to what you had, but it didn't last as long. She went to the doctor and got checked out, everything was ok. Doctor told her that sometimes people have brain farts and figured that is what she had.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't take aspirin unless told to do so by a doctor; it doesn't fix everything and can do harm in some circumstances. Do go to the ER; have hubby drive you if you are afraid of the ambulance's bill; it can be high. Check around your area; we have a hospital here that if you fill out a form when going in that says you can't pay then they'll not send you a bill; no it's not a county hopsital; I don't think we have a "county" hospital. Also; years ago my son a paralizing disease that thankfully he was able to come out of but had a huge hospital bill and not too much in the funds dept. The hospital told him to go to Social Services and fill out forms and they'd help take care of the bill. There are always ways but please tell your whole family don't ever let you lie in bed like that again; it could be dangerous. Doctors want to see the symptons while they are happening.

RugosaB 07-31-2011 07:33 AM

I don't think that is accurate but I would check with a medical person before using.

sculpyfan 07-31-2011 09:16 AM

My daughter had an episode while at the grocery store years ago and couldn't do math or talk right. Went to the ER and they diagnosed it as migraine. I didn't believe it and insisted she get a follow up. After hours at the hosp the next day they too said migraine. A girl my sister worked with would forget where she lived and how to call when she had her migraines. But 3 days is what makes it so worrisome. Good luck and hopefully you won't have it again. Take care.

Rann 07-31-2011 09:18 AM

If your hospital participates in the Hill-Burton act (as most of them do), they have to treat you whether you have insurance or can pay or not. Never hurts to ask.
