Never heard of them called Fava beans. Purple hull peas are delicious cooked with bacon or ham, onions & bell pepper. A nice big slice of corn bread and sliced tomatoes is a perfect meal.

I have never had Fava beans. I know this is terrible but I had never heard of them till the movie Silence of the Lambs came out. We also eat cream peas in Texas. They are to die for. My DFIL laughs at me cause I like a little catsup on mine. I know true redneck. Love the summer bounty. Pretty soon it will be yam season in Gilmer, Tx. The farmers grow a lot of them there but as much as they use too because of pest & things.

Shelling purple hull peas gives me a similar relaxed feeling like handquilting. Love them!

I'm an "Arkie" (Arkansas) and love purple hull peas. They are so much better than black eyed peas. I love fried okra, too, which is also a Southern vegetable. I have several rows of purple hull peas growing, as those from the store aren't nearly as good as home grown. And it's rare to find them in a can. I freeze mine.

I resell peas and butterbeans from South Georgia every summer. We sell LOTS of different kinds of peas, but my husband will only eat the purple hull. One year a customer didn't pick up some Cream 12's and Zipper peas. I wasn't going to lose them, so I blanched them and put them in the refrigerator. Ended up giving them away because he wouldn't eat them... Purple hulls are the number one favorite of all my customers and certainly NOT cow feed (but they do like the hulls!).
