Do You Think This Fad Will Catch On?

Recently I've been trying to learn how to sew garments. In Intermediate School I was forced to take Home Economics instead of Shop. I had no clue how to sew a dress together and had to ask the teacher for instructions at each step. When the dress was finished, it was sewn inside out. I wore it a few times anyway but decided sewing was not for me! Fast forward 50 years, and I thought I'd give it another try.

I had the bright idea to piece some leftover fabric together to make some pants. One problem was that the pieced fabric only fit the pattern on the front around the knee and not the back where it wouldn't be so noticeable. I sewed a contrasting fabric strip on to hide the seam to solve that problem.

Then... not knowing how to lay the pattern on the fabric correctly before cutting, I managed to cut one leg inside out and the other leg right side out. There was no more fabric to correct it so I sewed it together anyway for the practice. I guess some things never change. Who knows, maybe I've started a new fad! I think I'm going call them my designer pants. :)

:d rofl!!!

Cybrarian 06-06-2017 08:02 PM

LOL, move on to quilting where inside out is a design choice!

shadoh 06-06-2017 08:15 PM

Go for it...perfect for shopping at Walmart.

bearisgray 06-06-2017 09:23 PM

Yes, I think they are cute..def a new fad...of some kind. I would wear them just like I had intended to do them this way. You may make all kinds of new friends. I wish you lived near me , I'd love to teach you to sew. This is what I made for my son last wkend...alas I live in TN.

blahel 06-07-2017 01:39 AM

haha laughing with you not at you. Glad I'm not the only one

helou 06-07-2017 01:57 AM

I like them and I would certainly wear them!!! :o

anne2016 06-07-2017 02:33 AM

I kinda like them. I would definitely wear them. I am with shadoh....wear them to WM. I wonder if anyone would stop you and ask where you bought them! Some might think you were a crazy person and some would admire your creativity. Would be interesting to find out.

JustAbitCrazy 06-07-2017 02:41 AM

I like them. Before you go shopping, paint the toenails on your right foot a dark color and those on your left foot a light color, and wear sandals. I bet no one notices anything at all, not your pants or toenails.

junegerbracht 06-07-2017 03:06 AM

It's a design element. I think they are quite stylish!

Gaby 06-07-2017 03:12 AM

Why not.
Strabger things have happened
i think itis cool

QuiltnNan 06-07-2017 03:14 AM

unusual, but it could catch on :)

sandy l 06-07-2017 03:20 AM

Wear them with a smile:).

Gerbie 06-07-2017 03:32 AM

Well if you decide not to wear them out in public, they ill always work for wearing when doing yard work, or relaxing. if you make it why not wear it. I have to giggle sounds like something my daughter (who doesn't sew) would do. I have a dear friend that I am teaching to sew, not garments, but quilting and she has really taken to it, she has made 8 jelly roll quilts since the last part of November. This week I hope to teach her how to bind a quilt, all of these have just been pillow cased I call them (turned inside out) and tied.

ptquilts 06-07-2017 03:37 AM

sure beats the jeans with the holes in them!!

quilterpurpledog 06-07-2017 03:50 AM

I like your sense of humor! But, I think there is hope for your sewing future because you have a marvelous sense of humor. I was one of those home economics teachers. I had great success with some students; but, there were other who would have been happier in shop. One year I had boys who didn't want to be in shop and they were lots of fun to teach. Happy sewing!

Karamarie 06-07-2017 04:11 AM

So funny, but cute.

romanojg 06-07-2017 04:21 AM

first of all, great lounging and pj pants. The difference in sewing back in the day and now is called You Tube along with lots of other places. to be honest other than fabric being wrong side out on one side, you did a good job. Along with you tube there are teachers like Peggy Seagers from Silhouttepatterns.com, she does weekly videos, she also has all of her web cast posted on her site so you can see everything she's done for the past couple of years. She's really great and Angela Wolf is also great; I'm starting a sew along with her now making my first pair of jeans. Both of these ladies have great fitting patterns as well. Craftsy.com is also great, they even have several free mini classes. Right now they are selling DVD's for the classes for a great price.

Have you thought about taking classes. Not sure what all you have in your part of VA but Tidewater sew n vac has great classes on sewing. I've actually been playing with the idea of teaching for them part time. I'm into quilting, embroidery, just getting back into garment sewing after a 20 yr break and things have changed so much. Good luck.

Onebyone 06-07-2017 04:23 AM

Not so much learn to sew, you can sew great. Maybe a lesson on how to read a pattern. The picture lay out has everything you need to know, the grain line, which pieces are right side up, which are cut on the fold, and how to fold the fabric for the size fabric you have, directional or non directional. Craftsy has a sewing pattern classes.

Homespun 06-07-2017 04:32 AM

Thank goodness, you can laugh at your mistakes!

Kassaundra 06-07-2017 05:02 AM

They remind me of Bedlum shirts here in Oklahoma. We have 2 main OK ball teams, OU, and OSU, and ball games are important here to most people. Anyway many families have ties to both colleges so are torn as to who to root for. When both Oklahoma teams play each other it is called Bedlum and some people sew the OU and OSU shirts together in the middle to show support for both teams.

Pudge 06-07-2017 05:08 AM

Awesome pants, really. You nailed the fitting part which is the most difficult. You get an A++ in class today!!

Endora 06-07-2017 05:21 AM

I don't see why not, as I see it as being no more unusual than the young girls dying their hair that horrid looking purple-grey lately.

Wanabee Quiltin 06-07-2017 05:47 AM

I think your pants fit you very well, they are hanging great. I can sew mostly anything I want, but don't anymore. I think you could sew some great pants if you buy the right amount of fabric , try a solid that is the very same color on both sides in case you lay them wrong. The instruction sheet does show clearly how to lay fabric pieces and I still follow those for about 75% of my cutting, I wouldn't recommend that to you until you are proficient. Keep it up, I think you can learn how to sew.

zozee 06-07-2017 05:53 AM

They're kind and cute, actually. I'm sure you'd have at least one person stop and ask where you purchased them. You can tell them "from a place called The Jennr8tr that has Custom design clothing ." People wear anything these days; give it a whirl!

DonnaC 06-07-2017 05:59 AM

Like someone else said - you nailed the fitting part, which is the hardest! Keep going for it, I think you'll do fine. Just keep in mind, pressing as you sew makes a huge difference in the finished product. It's so important.

I actually started out as a garment sewer and graduated from the master seamstress program here in my state, then moved along to quilting. It makes me quite happy that some quilt patterns are now telling us to press seams open instead of to one side, because that comes more naturally to me LOL!! :)

MaggieLou 06-07-2017 06:28 AM

Actually, I think they are cute. Most people wouldn't know if it was a mistake or a "design choice".

sash 06-07-2017 07:02 AM

Well, I was going to say that they look like they fit very nicely, but someone already said it. If you have that down, the rest will follow. I think they look great.

Jane Quilter 06-07-2017 07:11 AM

They sure do fit nice. And actually, they are kind of cute.

mrs. fitz 06-07-2017 07:15 AM

I like them. Worst that can happen, they'll be your "house pants".

sewbizgirl 06-07-2017 07:17 AM

They look like great fitting house pants, or pjs, especially if they have an elastic waist. Look at this as a trial run of the pattern.

Just an FYI: Horizontal seams at the knees are not long for this world. The add on strips would have been better put at the hems, where there is no stress.

Keep sewing your clothes! You've got a good start.

osewme 06-07-2017 07:28 AM

I love your pants & especially like the fabric strip at the knees. I would wear the out & about & would love to hear what kind of comments you receive on them. I think it will catch on & I wouldn't tell anyone it was a mistake....just a new design that you invented.

annette1952 06-07-2017 07:50 AM

I agree with everyone's comments. They fit very nicely. You can sew but you just need instructions on reading the patterns. Personally I think they are quite cute & you could wear them most anyplace. If you don't feel comfortable wearing them like to the store then just wear them around the house. You just may be onto something... You never know but whatever you do don't loose your sense of humor. It is great!

Or women dying their hair multi-colored.

Chasing Hawk 06-07-2017 07:55 AM

I like the pants! Very unique.

Boston1954 06-07-2017 08:26 AM

I love them! Everybody is going to want these.

My friend had been quilting for years but never learned to sew anything else. She took a couple Craftsy classes and is now sewing pj's, t shirts, pants, everything. She said their sewing classes were great.

I had to add the seam there because I was piecing leftover fabric together to get enough fabric for the pants. I would have liked to have the seam on the back of the leg, but that pattern piece was too wide for the remaining fabric. The seam line looked pretty bad on the front so I added the fabric strips to make it look like it was intentional. It sits at the top of the knee so maybe the stress won't be too bad. If a hole appears I'll just be that much more fashionable with a knee patch! LOL! I like your idea of strips of fabric on the hem as a new design element. The first time I made these pants there was supposed to be a 1.5" hem. I was surprised when I tried them on that I could only put a .5" hem on them because of my leg length. I could add a strip of fabric the next time I come up short! :)

Visually challenging! Nice try.
