As a retired teacher, I always read what I post and edit if there is an error. If you make a spelling error here, it is rewarded with a red squiggly line under it, but that won't help with grammatical errors.

I cannot stand the television ads that use improper grammar and I particularly hate the "me and my brother" error! I have also written to owners of websites and report their errors to them. Some even wrote back and thanked me

I am just glad we write in my native language or I would be in real trouble  I have noticed that sometimes my words are missing letters I know I pushed, so either my keyboard wants to get involved in the post or my fingers are losing strength in my old age!

I try to proof read before hitting the Send button-- but on a few occassions things have been out of my control I started an E/M then the UPS guy came to the door While I was signing for pkg my little cat finished the E/M and sent it The bad spelling worried my Aunt she tried to call when I didn't answer the phone she hit print and came over Tommy Girl walked acrost the keys -stepped on mouse hit send which was a good thing it alerted me to the fact that my phone was on the fritz which is another story

I proof and fix all the time especially emails at work - multitasking constantly.

jbj137 05-22-2011 08:54 AM

I always try to proofread but miss occasionally.
I have recently even found errors in best selling books.

I agree. Sometimes I can't tell what the person means with the way they spelled important words.
If you hit 'MUTE' on the tv then it is a machine that spells by sound and very quickly. That I can handle but on here you should edit for spelling IMHO.

Iamquilter 05-22-2011 09:28 AM

I do because my fingers are crooked and hit the wrong keys sometimes. I inherited a trait from my Dad , the ring finger on right hand is closing and tips of fingers have OA in them.

kit'smamma 05-22-2011 09:45 AM

For some reason the apostrophe errors (that's the plural of a singular noun and doesn't take an apotostrophe) but replaces a dropped letter as in that's used in this run on sentence. I had a secretary who sprinkled apostrophes around like pepper and I couldn't get through to her. I took out good old Strunk and White Elements of Style, enlarged the small page to letter size and left it on her desk. I figured she was sick of retyping everything I dictated and would apprecieate a reference. Instead she was furiously offended. Thus she continued to have to redo every letter and motion going into a court file after I sent it back with red marks. I'm such a snob and couldn't stand to sign my name to something so ignorant. I learned the use of punctuation in middle grades. It shouldn't be a matter of higher education. What are they teaching in the elementary schools these days?

jbj137 05-22-2011 10:16 AM

This is not spelling but it was one of
my typing teacher's pet peeve.

Saying ve- hic- le
instead of
ve -h i -cle.
Even TV announcers say it wrong.

Sorry for my bad use of English language, I'm French speaking, new to the computer, anytime I write something on the board I wonder if you understand what I want to say. I love this forum, no superwoman here, just decent people sharing their love of quilting, their simple joys, their heartaches. I feel a bound with you, I guess that is shared by a lot of the users. No matter how is the spelling, how hazardous is the grammar, I feel the real you, this is what is important to me.

Oh yes, I proofread. I see mistakes on tv and hear the news reporters read the same mistakes in several newscasts. Drives me crazy. I point them out only to get stares from the rest of the family.....

Kappy 05-22-2011 01:28 PM

Oh, Lord knows I try, but for some reason, when I re-read what I have typed, it looks correct as my mind knows what it is suppose to say. Then I send it and there it is, mis-spelled words, incorrect grammar, you name it, it's there! I reassure myself by thinking that the generation of texters are going to be far worse spellers than I am!!! LOL

sueisallaboutquilts 05-22-2011 01:39 PM

Marthe, I loved your post!!! And your English is just fine, but even if not nobody cares!!!!!!! We just want you here with us :D:D

sylviasmom 05-22-2011 01:50 PM

I'm a good speller, but I just got a new computer and the keyboard is so tiny, I keep hitting the wrong keys. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.:)

LOL!!! Sometimes we can get a good laugh from typos!

I'm not OCD about this topic. I do proofread most of the time. But in general I don't think it's a big deal. We all make mistakes and this is not a formal paper or resume. And in todays world with all the text messaging people get used to short cuts and such.

won tyme i txt my daugher an speled everthin wrong. i tell her she had male hear and too get it sooner. but whatca gonna due? peopl hurry sew much 2day an dont think it mattters bout spelin an grammr

Mea culpa, mea culpa - I an the ex-English teacher who is dyslexic & complained about news commentators earlier. This issue is more difficult for people with communication problems than for others. You have to make sure you see what they said, then verify it, try to understand what they meant, and, hopefully, respond to that correctly. It used to take 3 hrs. for my sister to transcribe a 1 hr. lecture - kids gone, dishwasher & washing machine off and only 1 light on over her desk. How she perservered is beyond me. Kuddos to all who keep on trying!

I would appreciate spell check for when we post - - hint, hint.

I had the same request. Love spell check. :-D

I read a study once that as long as the first and last letters were correct, it did'nt much matter what the middle of the word was. People could still read the message. Plus, with texting all the rage, people don't remember how to spell.

I'm with you. I try to go back, too. I'm happy that Crafty mentioned that we have 15 min. to correct errors. I didn't know that.
My pet peave is bad grammar. Ever listen to high schoolers? I think they must have dropped English Grammar from the classes. It grabs my ears immed. It's hard not to correct them but they wouldn't understand.
Oh yes, & anybody working in TV. I don't understand that one. I guess it doesn't matter if you're pretty with long straight blonde hair.

MommaDorian 05-22-2011 03:37 PM

I proofread as much as I can. If I miss something, I edit.

A pet-peeve of mine is when someone uses the preposition 'at' at the end of a sentence. IE, where did you put it at? Argh!! Drives me crazy.

How about 'anyways'? That's another one that gets me. My mother reminded me over and over that it is 'anyway'. Now when I hear it, I think of her reminders.

I'm so happy to hear you say this. I had that problem when I went from a desktop to a laptop. I still have problems although I've had my laptop for about 4 yrs.

There is no way they turned in their own papers to get those degrees!

Could be why all the schools are in trouble for kids unable to read????? IMHO.

luce321 05-22-2011 04:19 PM

I always proofread, can't help it. Someone mentioned they are not a good typist, maybe they are not to blame. I am a good typist, but I find that the keyboard on the laptop is different than the desk top. I seem to make typing errors on the laptop that I don't on the desktop. I think the keys are closer on the laptop. Maybe I'm mistaken, what do you all think?

luce321 05-22-2011 04:34 PM

Years ago, my daughter's English teacher told her class that when she receives a letter from some company advertising something and it is grammatically incorrect, she will correct it and send it back to the company.

I can't stand to see a mistake. I spend more time editing than actually typing the message. BTW, I was once commissioned by a woman to repair her husband's childhood quilt. She brought me his old silk ties and yes, his old silk boxers. Ewwwwww!

grammyj 05-22-2011 04:48 PM

and some say "ideal instead of idea"

djmormon 05-22-2011 06:07 PM

I am just a poor writer. I can proof read, use spell check, dictionary.com, write first on Word, and still make many mistakes. I will write book when I want to write look. Drives me crazy and I have struggled with this all my life. I love to communicate so I write anyway and hope you will forgive me for my weakness. I just proof read and noticed I wrote more instead of poor.

Momsmurf 05-22-2011 07:41 PM

Funny that you should mention proofreading.......I was just wishing there was a "spellcheck" button available when posting here!

I do try to proof before I "send" but sometimes it seems that since I know what I meant to say I see it instead of what I really typed! OOPS.

But as others have mentioned, if I see a typo, I go back and edit it....most of the time..

I agree with you. I prefer a desk top...currently have two in the "office" (spare bedroom which has been taken over by Mr. Clutter) which are both non-functioning, so I'm stuck with this lap top. Keybaord is different.

biscuitqueen 05-22-2011 08:09 PM

I'm not a proof reader or a good speller, but I do have a dictionary handy at the 'puter.

As I get older my fingers seem to get stupider!
So I edit because I like to have things nice and clear.
I miss some typos, of course, but I have the time to take time to edit.
I noticed the quilts made of shorts and thought "that is quaint" and took another look too...
I encourage everybody to take a minute, re-read, and fix the mistakes, so that their readers will not think they have stupid fingers!

Pzazz 05-25-2011 08:07 AM

So glad I am not the only OCD person on here!!! LOL I am sure I still miss some of my own, but I do try to catch them.

For several years, we had a secretary at our church named Christy, Her biggest oops was typing "Jesus Christy" in a prayer in the Sunday bulletin. She laughed along with the rest of the congregation. ;)

I'll read back through - but often my brain will just substitute what I meant to say instead of what I actually said -- easy mistakes that I see in other peoples writing I completely miss in my own

Maralyn 05-29-2011 04:31 PM

;-) I made a t-shirt quilt using t-shirts and some shorts (not underwear).

The mistakes that get me are as follows: Local restaurant had a coupon in the ad that read:

Win free buffet's for a year!

suern3 05-29-2011 05:41 PM

I just want to know why it is that my mistakes jump out at me after I post and I can't see them before! I usually can go back in and edit. On the other hand, for personal email, my SIL and I have agreed to ignore the errors which usually are are typos. Ohterwise we would never get our messages done. (and here is an example right here) :)

madelinkk 05-29-2011 05:50 PM

I'm a retired teacher, and I sometimes find myself moving the cursor to correct errors that I see. LOL
