Does anyone besides me proofread anymore? LOL...this will probably have a typo as well! Surely glad to know that a recent quilt was made with men's shirts and not shorts, as originally stated! Hard to imagine that, but I was trying.

Sadiemae 05-21-2011 06:04 PM

I find that if I see a mistake even after proofreading I will go to edit and fix it. I can't help it! Also, I don't even read things that are in all CAPS. It is just too hard on my eyes.

BKrenning 05-21-2011 06:13 PM

No, they don't. Not even on the news tickers or in the newspapers. It used to drive me crazy but I've come to realize that the world is full of terrible spellers. My first clue was when I had to re-type meeting minutes for 2 different retired school superintendents, both with Masters degrees in education. There is no way they turned in their own papers to get those degrees!

irishrose 05-21-2011 06:18 PM

I am a good speller, but terrible typist. I hate when I see an error too late to edit. Whoops, that just said 'roo late'.

craftybear 05-21-2011 06:22 PM

I usually try to proofread what I type as I type so fast and make mistakes sometimes as we have 15 minutes to go back in and edit a post we post to the board

Murphy 05-21-2011 06:43 PM

I do (smile).

PWinston 05-21-2011 06:46 PM

I have been known to go back several times to edit my post if I see a grammatical, punctuation or spelling error. Sure that I miss some but am too OCD not to change it if I notice it.

I would appreciate spell check for when we post - - hint, hint.

Murphy 05-21-2011 06:46 PM

I do (smile).

Me, too.

A pet peeve of mine is 'to' where 'too' should be used. Sorry, I'm just OCD.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-21-2011 06:57 PM

Oh this is funny!!! I'm so anal about spelling and grammar!!
(especially grammar!!!) :D

aorlflood 05-21-2011 07:00 PM

One time I was on a forum and somebody mentioned they found ants in their panty (pantry). LOL

I love the unintentional ones! hahaha

TacoMama 05-21-2011 07:02 PM

I try to proof read and I HAVE to fix it.....it's the OCD in me.

It's okay to be OCD about it! Sometimes I want to fix others errors as well.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-21-2011 07:09 PM

Can you imagine how hard it must be to learn the English language if it's not your native tongue ?? TonnieLoree's post is a great example!!

DogHouseMom 05-21-2011 07:14 PM

Apparently they don't proof read. I received a newsletter today from my small town. The first ever published (new Mayor). The amount of typo's was embarassing (are there two R's in embarass?). I personally rely heavily on a spell checker.

One of them I remember was an add for the Catfish Fry - Free (donation excepted). Clearly they meant accepted.

Drives me bats when I see professionals at work using to and too, and sometimes two, incorrectly.

fraydknot12326 05-21-2011 07:27 PM

I always *try* to correct my errors. :)

I also try to remember that not everyone on this board (or any others) have been lucky enough to have had higher educational opportunities ~ JMHO :D

earthwalker 05-21-2011 07:41 PM

I try very hard not to make mistakes when writing/typing and continue to reach for a dictionary for those tricky words. If I'm not sure of a meaning, again, I will reach for a dictionary (this seems to be a lost "art".)

I constantly see horrific spellings when out and about or conducting business. I usually will point them out....I mean, would you use a lawyer or accountant if their advertising was full of errors?

My kids were taught from an early age, you don't use a word unless you can spell it and you know what it means.

What we do have to remember though, places like this site and others, English is a second language for many people. As well, there are many among us who have not had the opportunity of a good education. My husband had very little formal schooling, English is his second language and he does find English incredibly difficult to write. He is a very gifted man and is valued at his workplace for being their best troubleshooter and problem-solver. His math skills are awesome and he was a huge help to the boys when doing higher math studies at University. So, while some of us word enthusiasts and literature buffs can be a tad pedantic....there are a lot of other skills to be learned from our less "wordy" friends.:)

greensleeves 05-21-2011 07:44 PM

I proofread and hopefully correct obvious errors. Can't catch them all. I tolerate the errors I see and hope the fear of proofreading doesn't keep anyone from posting.

Good Morning everyone. I noticed that when I go in to edit a post it than gives me 15 more minutes. I especially notice this when I'm looking something up for someone and come and go from the post. Anyone else notice this?

J Carol 05-22-2011 04:05 AM

Hi Could you tell me what pattern your avatar is please?

quiltaroni 05-22-2011 04:40 AM

I can spell, but cannot type.I have to edit my errors as best I can,I will do a much better job when someone invents a screen I can write on with a stylus.

azdesertrat 05-22-2011 04:49 AM

I do most of the time.I found out that even after you post it,You can go back and fix it.I thinks its "edit reply",click on that, fix your mistakes and repost, pretty cool

SueDor 05-22-2011 04:54 AM

I try to proof read my messages and I have often wondered if we could request a spell check here on the board but I haven't asked yet.

QuiltnNan 05-22-2011 05:07 AM

i always have to fix my mistakes and find it difficult to read typing, spelling, and grammatical errors of others. and the tv drives me nuts.

I do the edit thing also. I know how to spell but my cat always has to be climbing around my hands on the keyboard so I hit wrong keys all the time.

just_the_scraps_m'am 05-22-2011 05:56 AM

i automatically proofread--they stick out like a sore thumb! there are some really funny booboos here on the board, but you can usually figure out what they're trying to say.
the ones that fracture me the most are the ones who still can't use the apostrophes correctly!!

star619 05-22-2011 06:18 AM

QuiltNan,
I agree about television, especially newspeople. These commentators are supposed to be educated. How can you take their reportage seriously if they cannot speak English correctly? What happened to proofreaders or role models for our kids or ESL viewers?
Ex-English teacher (not popular at parties-tell them you're a librarian)

Lynneander 05-22-2011 06:32 AM

I try to check my writing for errors and, hopefully, correct anything before it is posted. I am surprised when reading other posts that I breeze through the sentences easily, even if there are errors. Does the brain just recognize the word as a whole?

phatquilts2 05-22-2011 06:46 AM

what about the spelling in *txtng? *t e x t i n g

u r

ptquilts 05-22-2011 07:08 AM

hey., how about it's and its? That drives me nuts most of all. I have seen it used wrong on national television, apparently NO ONE is proofreading anymore.
And texting, ugh!! I read another board where some people type in text speak - comes across as so juvenile, hard to take someone seriously when they can't even spell out "you".

Someone should give me a job proofreading, I would be good at it.

I would make a lot more mistakes if I didn't have a spell-check thingy when I type, I tend to be very dyslexic (almost wrote dylsexic, see?) when typing. Never can get "usually" right the first time.

ptquilts 05-22-2011 07:13 AM

I just found this title in classifieds

For NY Yankees Quit Looking for fabric

now put a comma after Yankees, lol

alwayslearning 05-22-2011 07:15 AM

Most of the errors that we see in spelling and grammar cannot be dismissed because of lack of higher education. These are the fundamentals that used to be taught in elementary school (which used to be called grammar school). Unfortunately, here in Florida, teachers must devote their time teaching students how to take standardized tests that merely test how well someone memorizes and takes tests, not what they have learned.
Also, beware of spellcheck, if the wrong word is spelled correctly, i.e., "you're"/"your" .... It only checks spelling, not the correct usage.

fivepaws 05-22-2011 07:40 AM

Novels were the first!! I am always finding the wrong words. They jump out at me. Ware vs wear, met instead of meet etc.
I know I miss a lot of my typos but believe me, if I see them, I have to edit.
