I know everyone on here is way younger than me, but it sure seems like making quilts is a much longer/tiring process than it used to be.

Remember when I basically sewed from daylight till sundown....no more! Used to cut out a K size quilt in one session...no more.Did all the pressing in one go.Sewed all the rows together ....ditto. No more! Always had 3-4 quilts ready to send to LA quilter.
Just writing this down makes me realize why making a quilt seems to take longer, it does! Lots longer!
Think I need a new name, how about "creakybones"?

creakybonesII here and I totally agree!

Good morning Pat - you're not alone in that feeling (& probably not the oldest on here). I've found I have the same problem. All my quilts used to be hand quilted, but I find my hands now dictate when & how long I can do that.

But now at 77, EVERYTHING seems to be more difficult & take longer . It's 'ain't easy getting old!!! :XD:

Have a blessed day & may all your quilts be filled w/love.

dakotamaid 08-18-2011 03:33 AM

My 88 year old MIL says the same thing. However, she can sew circles around me. I can't cut donation quilt tops fast enough to keep her busy!! I'm getting a respite cause she is busy canning her garden produce. Hope I do as well at 88.:)

Glassquilt 08-18-2011 03:34 AM

The work's not taking any longer. There's just more & more rest breaks between the working times. :)

JulieR 08-18-2011 03:46 AM

I'm doing more difficult patterns as I get more experienced, and those take longer to do with more brain power engaged - so I find I need to step away more often and work on something else.

Like shows with Gordon Ramsey on them.

This is so true......We just don't make basic Quilt Patterns anymore.......
My good friend Nancy N. was telling me that WE[anyone over 40] are older quilter's.... The NEW Generation of Quilter's are buying the pre-cut's...they are finishing quilt's alot faster....the down side is when they want to learn to cut out material well, they don't like it!!!!! Says it takes too long...... They go back to pre-cuts.....That is sad:( :( :( .

Well, if just being over 40 makes you an "older' quilter, then I must be an 'antique (sorry, gotta be PC - Vintage)' quilter. :XD: :XD:

You're right about the newer generation of quilter's thou - I was 'out' of quilting for about 10 yrs., & now there are SO MANY new techniques & quilters "toys" out there, I don't know how to even use them.

It's interesting to get to live this long & realize many of the techniques I 1st used are just not "in" anymore.

JulieR 08-18-2011 04:42 AM

Well, I am 39 and a half and I love to buy layer cakes -- but only layer cakes, and only because they give me "just enough" of a collection to give me a taste. But it still needs slicing.

So I wonder if we can tell age by attitude toward pre-cuts? I'm *almost* 40, and I *almost* don't buy pre-cuts. LOL!!

I think the girl was in her 20's......Hey, I'm 57......I feel antiquish!!!! lol lol..Is antiquish a word??? lol lol

Melinda in Tulsa 08-18-2011 06:04 AM

I'm 57 and love precuts! Lazy too, LOL

Joyce DeBacco 08-18-2011 06:13 AM

I've actually found as I age that I'm doing less complicated quilts. Did all the fancy ones when I was younger. Now, I just want something to pass the time and still be useful.

And I've never bought pre-cuts. Neither have I sent out my quilting to be done. I do it all on my sewing machine myself. Not easy and maybe not perfect, but it's all my labors.

trolleystation 08-18-2011 06:37 AM

Of course it does.....eveything does.

LovinMySoldier 08-18-2011 06:40 AM

I'm only 25 and can't do any of that in one sitting. You aren't alone :)

Grannymom 08-18-2011 06:50 AM

well, I have 'birthday disease' and I don't buy precuts...
what I have FINALLY discovered is paper piecing (doing a New York Beauty) and I LOVE it...
The beauty of paper piecing is NOT having to have precise cuts, you can just sit and sew and press (I have a big area and just lean to the side to press)...
In fact, I ordered all the Sew Precise Foundation piecing CDs on sale at EQ!!...

amandasgramma 08-18-2011 06:51 AM

EVERYTHING takes more time and energy!!!!

Annaquilts 08-18-2011 06:58 AM

I am only 47 but yesterday I was thinking how much more effort it takes me to concentrated on directions and how many more mistakes I make compared to about 8 years ago. I also already have many joint issues for years already. I break up my activities so I have less fatigue. Good excuse for having many projects going on at the same time. Maybe a kind friend can help with some of the jobs that are more challenging like the cutting.

Don't be so hard on yourself.
I am new on the board, when I read about layer cakes and jelly rolls I thought I hit the wrong board. I am a baker, my hubby and I just closed our bakery in Oct. last year. And want too, get back to quilting. Thank goodness I google and can search without looking like a fool.. I am reading as much as I can hear. Just Wonderful... :-P

blueangel 08-18-2011 12:34 PM

I agree

scraphq 08-18-2011 01:22 PM

Glassquilt: You are so right!

mcar 08-19-2011 04:26 AM

Perseverance is what you have! You will see the quilt through.
I found that I slowed down on an easy quilt because I was thinking about the experiments I was going to undertake next, And I was a bit afraid of how it would work out. The love of color won out, curiosity did too. I have to take rests and nothing is done in a day. But I lay out the plan for the next session before stepping away. I find that layer cakes put the likeable fabric on top and the rest of the grouping does not really measure up. I gravitated toward them when I thought it would be too difficult to gather fabric for a quilt....I did not know how to chose colors!!!!

I'll take----Med Century Modern sounds better lol lol

ywoodruff5 08-19-2011 06:24 AM

I am sooooo LOL on that one. Ummmmmmm it takes me longer to go to sleep, get out of bed, walk to the mailbox, get dressed.....................yep everything takes longer as we age.

Minnisewta 08-19-2011 06:59 AM

I have slowed down because of the body and the brain has gotten foggy so I have think about things more before I do them. You know the old measure twice and cut once.

pollym44 08-19-2011 07:08 AM

Yes, Yes, what I use to do in days now takes weeks. Would need to live to be 255 yrs to use up fabric I have and find myself still buying.

lenette 08-19-2011 08:13 AM

Definitely takes much longer to do everything. Used to do the all-nighters. No way now.

grannypat7925 08-19-2011 08:23 AM

I hear you......loud and clear! Lots of things much slower in getting accomplished!

Everything takes longer! LOL The house I use to be able to whip through and cleaned up in a day, now takes me...well let's just say, I get side-tracked and never do seem to get everything done. This board does not help matters either.

Maris 08-19-2011 09:00 AM

This is an interesting subject. Getting older is not the "golden years" but I still enjoy the process of quilting--cutting, choosing colors, sewing, etc. Find I have to consentrate on what I am doing--as soon as my mind wanders, I make a mistake--ex: last night wanted to cut a "charm" in half instead I cut it into a 4" block. I try to work on quilts daily (if only for 1/2 hour)--eventually the small quilt will get done--no bedsize quilts. (82)

Dianne1 08-19-2011 09:02 AM

I think as we get older we get more fussy about what we do. So instead of saying well, its just a little off we rip it out and do it agin. Or after we make 50 squares decide we really don't like the quilt or pattern, this is after spending 2 weeks picking out colors. I guess getting older doesn't mean getting smarter.

charity-crafter 08-19-2011 09:07 AM

I find that I've learned from all my earlier sewing jam sessions to take my time and cut accuratey, press more frequently, so I don't speed through finished a quilt like I used to.

Plus my back gets all spasmy (new word) if I sit too long at the sewing machine so I have to get up and do other things.

serenitybygrace 08-19-2011 09:20 AM

I am on my first quilt and I was wonderfing why it was taking so long.

misscarol 08-19-2011 09:24 AM

I think as we get older, we take longer to make a quilt because we have the time to enjoy the process. I know when my children were younger, I went for the faster pieced quilts so I could get them done. Now, I love pieceing small pieces. Maybe I'm just getting crazier in my mature years :)
