Lincoln does this also but Truman is all about making his nest. This is him in the living room on what is normally Lincoln's couch. The blanket next to him is what he was working on the 10 minutes or so prior to the picture. Before he started it looked like the one on top of the couch. Folded in half and nicely layed down.

He spins and digs, spins more and digs more and next thing you know a couple more spins and he flops down.

He is not picky - he will use the dog bed in the family room, the blanket like you see here - well any blanket actually - and of course the quilt on the futon in my sewing room when I am in there.

Do your dogs do this?

I think the flash woke him up on this one.

Awwww such pretty babies, and yes mine make nests esp the bassett.

erstan947 06-29-2011 04:20 PM

I have one that cannot sleep on a flat surface. It must be fluffed and messed up!

Jazzmyn 06-29-2011 04:21 PM

Sweet puppies!! Yep I have 2 doxies and they both make their "nest"....never heard it called that I always just say they are making their bed. They are kinda like people they want their blankets/quilts just so so then they are Happy!!

I would love to see your Jack/Beagle mix. When we got Truman we were told he was a Puggle (Pug/Beagle) like Lincoln and we went with it. Of course now we know he is not and we think he is a Jug :)

mmdquilts 06-29-2011 04:28 PM

I only had one beagle who didn't nest. He had been abused and I rescued him... had him 15 years! The others had to ball up anything that they intended to sleep on. Just moved and will hopefully have another dog very soon.

craftybear 06-29-2011 04:28 PM

yes, Sophie my 5 year Shih Tzu does that also

Sadiemae 06-29-2011 04:29 PM

Molly, my poodle does this all of the time. I thought it was just normal.

littlehud 06-29-2011 04:32 PM

My dog doesn't but my dads does. It's so funny to watch her.

2 Doods 06-29-2011 04:33 PM

Not in their bed but they do out of MY pillows.

My 100 lb Akita-German Shepherd mix does this (Dog on the right in my avatar) Sometimes she isn't happy just messing up the blankets, she has to push the cushions off too!!!

judykay 06-29-2011 04:46 PM

Our boxe and lab do not but our boston terrier does it all the time.

noahscats7 06-29-2011 04:59 PM

Don't have a dog but several of my cats do.

irishrose 06-29-2011 05:05 PM

My Siberian/Shiba makes herself a pillow with her microfleece throw that's folded on the end of her bed - which is on my bed by her choice. My Border Collie/Lab is my nest maker. Lately it's been on her extra bed in the bathroom with one of my shoes covered with a microfleece throw for a pillow. At first I was nervous letting a dog use half of a $130 pair of shoes, but she just uses it to build the pillow. Former strays living the life of leisure!

Teacup 06-29-2011 05:30 PM

We got a "used" lab-mix several years ago. She was 10. She is a nester...has to dig her spot. She was not allowed on furniture but when we were not home she dug holes straight through the couch cushions. We had to throw it out. We now put her in the basement when we are not home. We started getting her cushions that she uses when we are home and can keep an eye on ther. She's dug through 3 of them in the past two years. She's also digging big holes under my large hostas in the yard to find a cool and shady spot. It's frustrating, but is instinct and can't train her otherwise.

Glassquilt 06-29-2011 05:36 PM

Ours has to rearrange his floor blanket. Works on it until he gets it just right and then sleeps on the carpet.

cminor 06-29-2011 05:37 PM

watterstide - I love those ears! Thanks for sharing!!

JulieR 06-29-2011 05:40 PM

All of our beagles do it to varying degrees. Sadie has to crochet an afghan and build a fort before she can sleep, but Parker just needs to dig at the sheet a little and spin around a new times - her "nest" is psychological, I guess. :)

nyelphaba 06-29-2011 05:42 PM

Both of our cockapoos "nest".

Going to try to post a picture of my little guy, Jude...

azdesertrat 06-29-2011 05:57 PM

it comes from their pre-domesicated days.In the wild they would make "nests" to lie in, their "bed", something that is in their psyche

I'm pretty sure my BG just does it to do it. She will wait until I put all the blankets back on the couch, nice and neat and it won't stay that way but a minute!!!! And then she gets down and lays on the floor...

butterflies5518 06-29-2011 06:09 PM

My Cocker Spaniel (13 yrs old) still does this.

Glenda m 06-29-2011 06:20 PM

Two of my dogs don't make nests, but they do have to have their blankies and they cover themselves up. My Ray terrier couldn't care less.

Stitchit123 06-29-2011 06:26 PM

Yep my little girl is a Manchester Terrier and she is a nester but my little boy is a Min-Pin and he gets under anything big enough to cover his self. Before you sit you gotta make sure he's not under what ever ?? And they both sleep with me It takes them 20 minutes to get their spots juusstt right :-)

sueisallaboutquilts 06-29-2011 06:28 PM

You're all making me miss my Barney so much!!! Love the pics of all the cute poochies!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D
Someday we'll get another. In the meantime we get visits from our grand puppy who at this point is a wildman LOL
He's so precious!!

Jingle 06-29-2011 06:41 PM

One of my late toy poodles would make a nest in her crate, other one never messed up her towel.
Cookie the chihuahua in my avatar makes a nest in her crate also, pulls the loops, has ruined about 7 or 8 towels in about 15 months. She has a separation thing also, that is going away.

You know, Ohio is on my way to visit my parents. I could drop off a pack of beags for you to play with for a few days... ;)

sueisallaboutquilts 06-29-2011 06:45 PM

LOL Julie, first let me run the idea by my 5 cats :D:D:D:D:D

Rhonda 06-29-2011 06:49 PM

My 13 yr old beagle Miss Maggie does it all the time. She has a bed and she has dug at the center til she has all the stuffing in it all balled up in one corner. She also grabs toys or shoes or anything that comes close to her and puts them in her bed. I find my shoes in there from time to time.

slstitcher 06-29-2011 06:55 PM

My little teacup poodle does this in the middle of the night in my pile of clothes in the bathroom if I don't put them in the basket, but then she has even jumped in the basket to sleep too. During the day she hits every pillow on the couch and loveseat and smashes them down to lay on. She is so funny to watch.

AZTeri 06-29-2011 06:57 PM

Yep. Both do, but mostly the shiztsu, Jake :)

earthwalker 06-29-2011 07:05 PM

My little Chihuahua x Jack Russell, Topo, does it, but Luca our big Malamute x Staffy prefers to "drape":)
