Our old dog (is that the correct way to refer to him? "My before dog"?), Yankee, was super active when he slept. We always used to joke that he had to take extra naps to make up for how exhausting his sleep was! He barked. He nursed. He licked his lips. He growled. He wagged his tail. He ran in place. He whimpered. His "eyebrows" danced all around. He flopped back & forth. He kicked. He burped. He wiggled his toes. But he did all this laying down. I've never heard of a dog literally sleep barking, but I'm sure stranger things have happened!

My little manchester-Midnight is 2 1/2 yrs old she has never barked, she snores and lets out little yips in her sleep.but upon moving to Missouri we now live near a rail road track and when the whistle blows she now howls with it.But she still won't bark. Now if I could get the other 2 to stop barking at falling leaves or moving grass I'd have it made.

Our dogs do all sorts of funny things while sleeping, but they are lying down when they do it. Our oldest dog manages to bark with a mouth full of toy. Don't know how she does that!

Like people, animals are all different. Sounds to me like your dog is dreaming. It's rather funny to watch an animal in dream mode, although I've never seen one that barks, etc. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen! My Cats both snore! My one cat has chronic sinusitis, like me. My husband says we all make noises when we sleep, Ha!

All my dogs would dream, make odd yipping, barking noises, and their feet would move. I'm thinking maybe your dog might have had a nightmare. Perhaps it heard or smelled something from outside that you couldn't detect. Is you dog old enough to start having some cognitive issues?

A long long time ago my little Pom would sleep on her back on the sofa. Every hour the clock would chime and she would bark back at it in her sleep, not moving an inch.

Funny I should see this post today. I have never had a dog that barks in his sleep, but in an entry today on Facebook, my niece was complaining that her dog did just that. She wished she understood dog language to see what he was saying. We were crating our dog at night, but now she spends the night outside. We live in the country.

Mine all made little noises when they slept. Two of them ran in their sleep. Their legsmwould get going. My chihuahua snores horribly. He sounds like a little bee. He sleeps under my chin, and it puts me to sleep!
