Our hummingbirds are slowly arriving this year.Wonder if bad weather dicimated them this year? somewhere. Usually we are micing the nectar by the gallons too. not this year.

Amazing, I do have a humming bird nesting in my tree by the window. I have never seen that. It feeds off my rose of sharon bush next to it.

Your pics are great. We only have two feeders, and this year, I don't see as much activity as in previous years.

That's funny! We kept having them fly into the garage and couldn't get them out. Finally figured out they were after the red emergency cord on the garage door opener! We changed it for another color and haven't had a problem since.

My hummers have been scarce this year too. I just figured they went farther north where it's cooler.

Last month we spent a few days at a lake and rented a cabin that had a nice breezy 2nd floor deck, so we sat out there in rocking chairs, enjoying the scenery. We noticed a hummingbird flitting around quite a bit and I finally saw her go to a nest where there were 2 babies. The nest was really tiny and camouflaged quite well. People, I'm 56 years old and that was the first time in my life I ever saw a hummingbird nest (except for in a book or on TV). We watched those babies be fed about every 10 minutes. They were so big they filled the nest and jostled each other for space. That poor mama bird made many, many trips to get food for them. We think she flew across the lake to where there were several houses on a bluff. Someone there must have had feeders. Watching them was really the highlight of my trip.

I have tried to put out feeders for our hummers but I have a problem with the liquid spoiling and getting moldy real fast. What do you that are in hot states do??? :-(

This is the first year I've put out feeders as I haven't seen them around that much. I have at least three that stop by regularly and had to put out a second feeder on another window because they were fighting over the one. I have the suction cup holders and the feeders like Dorothy's on her bottom tier. They are the easiest to clean as they come completely apart and don't have any tiny bottle openings. So far a quart of sugar water lasts over a week as I don't put much in them because I have to clean them every other day. The birds are fun to watch.

I don't fill my feeders full and wash them out every other day with HOT soapy water. I boil the sugar water in the microwave, cool and refrigerate until needed.

What solution ratio do you use? Birds & Bloom said 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup of water...........I tried that; my solution goes down but we seldom see them feed..............calla/Sue in MI
