I was working on a simple baby quilt made from charm squares when this came to me. I wrote it down right away. I am thinking of making a little book to go with the quilt.
The Drag around Quilt When I was new and far too small To do much of anything at all My mother covered me With a quilt of yellow, blue and red It warmed me in my little bed When I was one, I took my quilt upon a trip To Nana’s house down by the sea She said she made the quilt for me. It had a zoo of yellow, red and blue With frogs, and fishies and polka dots I really liked it lots and lots. When I was two And had to take a nap I would climb up on daddy’s lap My quilt I would drag there Just to cover us in the chair And when as last he fell asleep I would tuck it in around his feet. When I was three, And Momma said You are too old to suck your thumb, Or if I felt mad or cried, I would Make a tent in which to hide There on my bed, my quilt and me But only just when I was three. When I was four Daddy said, this quilt is worn We need a new one for your bed But I kept my old quilt instead And I would hold it very tight To keep away the monsters in the night. Now I am five, And I am all grown up I go to school each day To meet my friends and play I am too big for quilts you see So I gave it to my Teddy bear Just to keep him warm but if the night is dark Or I forget how to smile I ask him if I can have it back Just for a little while |

Nice poem !
When I make a quilts for my sister or brother's grandchildren I always make a Drag Around Quilt for them to use to. My daughter's drag around lasted for 6 years. It was almost in rags when she gave it up. She would rub her fingers over the bumpy parts of the binding. That was her way of falling asleep. She is 53 now and she told me a couple of years ago that she still does that. Those little drag arounds are comforting. Syl |

I love the poem!

How inspiring. You should really consider having it published. Search for a publisher of children’s stories. You have quite a winner there!

What a lovely poem! No little ones around me to share a drag along quilt with but I am hoping one of my son's will eventually settle down and give me some grandchildren. I'm going to save your poem. Thank you so much for sharing.
