I was working on a simple baby quilt made from charm squares when this came to me. I wrote it down right away. I am thinking of making a little book to go with the quilt.
The Drag around Quilt When I was new and far too small To do much of anything at all My mother covered me With a quilt of yellow, blue and red It warmed me in my little bed When I was one, I took my quilt upon a trip To Nana’s house down by the sea She said she made the quilt for me. It had a zoo of yellow, red and blue With frogs, and fishies and polka dots I really liked it lots and lots. When I was two And had to take a nap I would climb up on daddy’s lap My quilt I would drag there Just to cover us in the chair And when as last he fell asleep I would tuck it in around his feet. When I was three, And Momma said You are too old to suck your thumb, Or if I felt mad or cried, I would Make a tent in which to hide There on my bed, my quilt and me But only just when I was three. When I was four Daddy said, this quilt is worn We need a new one for your bed But I kept my old quilt instead And I would hold it very tight To keep away the monsters in the night. Now I am five, And I am all grown up I go to school each day To meet my friends and play I am too big for quilts you see So I gave it to my Teddy bear Just to keep him warm but if the night is dark Or I forget how to smile I ask him if I can have it back Just for a little while |

Nice poem !
When I make a quilts for my sister or brother's grandchildren I always make a Drag Around Quilt for them to use to. My daughter's drag around lasted for 6 years. It was almost in rags when she gave it up. She would rub her fingers over the bumpy parts of the binding. That was her way of falling asleep. She is 53 now and she told me a couple of years ago that she still does that. Those little drag arounds are comforting. Syl |
adorable!!

Very good....definitely book worthy!
|
How precious!
|
I love the poem!
|
How inspiring. You should really consider having it published. Search for a publisher of children’s stories. You have quite a winner there!
|
What a lovely poem! No little ones around me to share a drag along quilt with but I am hoping one of my son's will eventually settle down and give me some grandchildren. I'm going to save your poem. Thank you so much for sharing.

I still have my "bumpy cover", a blanket that was washed so many times it was actually bumpy. My mother kept it in a cedar chest that I inherited. Those drag around quilts are so important. I love your poem, it captured my feelings for my bumpy little blanket. Thanks for sharing.

Oh, sniffle, sniffle! Its a wonderful poem with so much feeling!
Thank you! |
You have done it! that is very good and you need to send to someone who would publish for you or print on one of those kids cloth books. I sell alot of them.
|
That is a beautiful poem!!
|
Your poem is just perfect!!! My youngest DD had a blanket that was gave to DH from his employer. DD loved the silky little tag on it and would rub it between her thumb and fingers at night before she went to sleep. She called her blanket "Tag" and slept with it for years. It is now tucked way in her cedar chest that belonged to my Mom.

I fell in love with your quilt and poem.

So very very sweet. Thank you for sharing..

Oh, that is just precious. You need to copywrite it. It just is a lovely little quilt poem, or "growing up" story.
|
I can really see this as a children's book with illustrations. What a great gift to present with a drag along quilt. Keep up the good work.

What a wonderful story - yes by all means make the quilt and book!
|
I love it and it would be such a nice addition to add with the quilt. And if the poem could be illustrated.....WOW!!!

Cute!

Here is another poem for a quilt. I envisioned an Attic windows with a fabric that has lots of African animals on it. I have yet to find the right fabric. Across between kiddy cute and realistic...might find it some day.
Papa went to Africa to see what he could see he saw some hippo's in a pool and monkeys in a tree. He saw cheetahs running fast through forests dim and cool. He found a moonless night so full of deep and velvet dark it's spangled diamond lights. that shone with fire's spark Come home now Mama said she called to Papa from the hall. Time for babes to be abed, so sleep can come for all. So Papa closed our story book. He kissed our rosy lips then we set out on starry seas to sail our dream laden ships Our port of call to Africa beyond our own dear isle until the morn should come and wake us with a smile. |
Cute poem-the drag along quilts are the best.
|
I love your poem.
I hope all the baby quilts I make will become 'drag-alongs'. |

I have heard you can protect your copy-rights by mailing a copy to yourself. It will contain the complete works and a date stamp (from the postal cancelation mark) to prove when you wrote it. On the outside of the sealed envelope, maybe on the back, write the title of the works contained. File the retuned mailed envelope with a separate copy of the complete work found inside the envelope for future reference. Now… I did a Google search for children’s book publishers and found thousands! There was even a site for “How To”. Do a bit of research and find several publishers that you want to summit your work to. Include a cover letter that explains that this work could include a quilt pattern for the story. You might find yourself in a dual market. Children’s and Quilting. You can do it!! Best of luck to you!! Mona PS. when you're a famous published author, just remember us little people ;) |
So sweet.

So cute (wiping tears away) It reminds me of when my kids were small. :)
|
That is a really wonderful poem. Really hits home with me cause I slept with my "blankie" til I was married and had to give it up.
|
We Moved when my children were in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. New rooms...new bedding. The youngest wore holes in the satin binding of his blanket. When he went to 4H sleep away camp that blanket was inside his sleeping bag. Well washed...well loved.
|
Now cute!!
|
Maybe dashton4 (Darcy Ashton) could have some tips since she has many quilting books published.
|
