Drenched in the South
Nothing like being homebound in a rain storm. This tropical thing has been sitting upon us for quite a while and we are homebound because of high water, Thankfully our homes are sitting high and dry but many neighborhoods aren't so lucky. My husband is chomping at the bit to make a big pot of gumbo. I, on the other hand have been stitching away. I had pieced 100 Mountain Majesties blocks and had them organized to be stitched together. Well the first day of the rain, I sewed my rows together. Yesterday I pressed the joining seams open. To avoid burned fingers, I used the little Clover ironing tool (not sure what it's called). Watching the Olympics at the same time made the time and the work fly by. Today I need to do some trimming and then begin the assembly of rows. Sure would like to know what other Cajun country quilters are doing while staying out of the rain. Hope none of you are flooded out.

Hope you stay high and dry. I am parched where I live, So CA. Wish we could get some of your water!

Here in Corpus Christi we could use some rain. Have had not even an inch in over a month. Landlord wants us to use soaker hose on the foundation which we have been but to no avail. best time to water the yard is after 6 pm and 10 am. We only do it when DH wakes up at between 4-5 am then turns it off when he leaves for work at 7am. Soaker hose is on at same time. SAw a guy flick a cigarette out the window and just about same time police officer saw the same. Pulled him over pronto. No one was home at the property where the guy flicked the cigarette. Could've been horrible situation.

I wish we could send some of this rain somewhere. The mosquitoes are out in force!

We could use some rain here. Its supposed to hit this weekend so I'm planning to spend some time in my sewing room. I always watch tv when I'm sewing, but I won't be watching the Olympics. I have a DVR that's 76% full of mysteries and other favorite shows. :)

Terrible flooding on the news, glad you are high and dry!
|
it's been over 90* for the last few days. with the heat index it's over 100. I just opened the front door, it's oprssive out there. Stay dry. Maybe we can get some rain here. it feels tropical here today.

We (in Mississippi) have had the same storms. Loads of rain but as a result today is mild and cool! In August! I'll take it.
Had to cancel my water aerobics class yesterday due to thunderstorms (its an outside pool) and was forced to stay home and quilt. It was pure torture, I tell you... ;) The relief from the oppressive heat is most welcome. |
Could sure use some of your rain here. What we do have is hit-and-miss. Yesterday 5 miles north of our house got a good rain, and us..nothing:(
|
The pictures on TV are terrible. The lady and little white dog someone pulled out of a red convertible. I bet she had one more breath of air in there as it was under water. Looked like the little dog made it too.
All the rain has missed us in Northern Indiana. Stay safe. |
I was beginning to think someone had an umbrella over us since it rained so hard all around us. When we finally got some rain (which we needed), it was far less than the surrounding areas. But we are watching the level of the river out back for flow from north of us. May take a couple days to affect us. Ever feel like you were living on a time bomb?

It looks like the storms have moved west. We've had a lot of rain and lost power this morning. I saw some reports of high water in the area. Thank God our house sits up high and drains onto the golf course. I hope the people near the bayou who got flooded in April are okay.
|
We had half a inch yesterday and a trace this morning. Could still use a couple of inches more. Mabey some of yours will move this way. Praying for those that have been flooded so bad.
|
Pretty Ominous! I am so very grateful that we are high and sorta dry. Only 15 minutes to the north and 15 minutes to the west are REAL bad. Major interstates closed, thousands stranded. National guard helicoptering in food (MRE) and water. Heard a semi driver with a load of vegetables opened up his truck and gave away everything. Best Wishes to all in this weather event! Keep safe!

What a great way to spend your time when you are homebound. I am looking forward to seeing a post of your completed quilt.

Im here in the middle of this water. Its bad! Have not been able to get to my mom, daughter and other relatives. Water is in their houses and they are staying with ones with dry homes. Hope tomorrow we can get to them. There is no one that has not experenced some damage.

We recently moved from Baton Rouge and still have many good friends there that are in serious trouble. Some
are on high ground and our old subdivision stayed dry but we know what a misery it all is and how long it will take for any kind of recovery. Insurance adjusters will be backed up. Tradesman will be backed up. Supplies will be in demand. Money will be tight. Hotels overcrowded. Not everyone has family to take them in. So many people have lost everything and even with good insurance life will never be the same for them. We need a water pipeline to send the overflow to drought areas! |
I'm sure there are quilters that have lost their stash, books, machines etc. I'm sorting a lot of my stuff and would be willing to send it down to the area. Is there a coordinator? Address? Is this a good idea?

I'm from south Louisiana, too. We had to sandbag and use pumps to keep our houses from flooding. We had tremendous parish, community, and farming support. The amount of help we received was overwhelming. It's wonderful how neighbors help one another in times of need. Where exactly do you live? I live on the west side of Mississippi in Iberville Parish.

I am finally getting a few minutes to sit and chill. In the past 6 days we have completed salvaged undamaged items and gutted out walls and floors in my daughters house. We have gatered memories and boxed my moms house. Her house, my childhood home, is not repairable. Mom is 86 and it breaks my heart that she has to leave it. My sewing room is now her new home. Our lives are so changed and there will be more to come as these days go on.

so sorry for all of you that are experiencing this--either yourselves or your families. Living in "tornado alley" we've seen disaster, but I don't think ANYthing is as destructive and a mess as flooding--so please know my thoughts are with you.

I haven't been doing much quilting the last several weeks - and really miss it!! I've been busy (doctor's appointments, happily spending time with family, and cleaning out clutter and doing home repairs). I've set aside a few days for this coming week and I am NOT going to let anything interfere with quilting time. We have some thunder storms (today and a couple of nights ago) but don't know what next week's weather will bring. So very sad to see the folks that have had floods. Next week I'll pretend I'm rained or snowed in and quilt away. I've got my "chick flicks" lined up and am going to try and make some progress on my Dear Jane quilt.
