Dresses and bonnets smocked some 30 years ago

My sister is moving and in the process of packing up everything. She so beautifully preserved the little dresses and bonnets I smocked for her daughter, my niece that is now 33 years old. No granddaughters to inherit them but she says she will keep them for dolls in a china cabinet. I appreciate that she lovingly kept them and in such great condition. They bring back such sweet memories for me and I can hardly believe I made them much less remember how I did it so many years ago. Those were some of the best years for me. I did not have children but my sister blessed me with the sweetest and dearest niece and nephew so I am forever grateful. And the vintage suitcase is just perfect for them too.

Your work is beautiful. I also "smocked" at one time..for my now 31 yr old daughter. I have a grand daughter but my dd said she wouldn't need any of the old fashioned stuff.. Sad face here. I also did bonnets, nightgowns, dresses and Christmas ornament. AND at one time I was making custom Bridal garters. Those were really fun.

What a treasure! You did an amazing job! This is a craft I would love to learn -- you certainly were a master of this skill! So glad the dresses and bonnets were so lovingly saved. These are truly heirlooms! Wish you lived by me - I would love to learn from you.

Hi Jackie,
Wow my sister's name is Jackie too. And it is sad but you are absolutely right about the "old fashioned stuff". Oh well it was so much fun while it lasted and I still enjoy looking at them and my Christmas ornaments too !!! Thank you and have a great day

maryb119 07-30-2014 03:21 PM

There are no words to say how beautiful these things are!! I wish I knew how to do this. You do beautiful work.

lfstamper 07-30-2014 03:25 PM

These are gorgeous and such keepsakes. Your details are fabulous!

DogHouseMom 07-30-2014 03:28 PM

I smocked once, as a project in high school sewing class. I appreciate the work!! Your smocking is absolutely gorgeous!!

tessagin 07-30-2014 03:32 PM

Absolutely stunning work. Loved the dresses and bonnets. My mother would dress us up in anything smocked. I just love them on babies. Even some smocking for little boys. God forbid you would put something smocked on a little boy any more.

mawluv 07-30-2014 03:43 PM

Thanks, brought back sweet memories of my two girls. I lost all my keepies in a house fire in 1986. Very nice work! Do you have the pullen pleater? Do you want to sell it? I could maybe teach my GDs.

misspriss 07-30-2014 04:00 PM

I have a picture (4) of my mother, myself, my daughter and her daughter, all in the same dress at the same age. Priceless treasure. I now have 4 great grand daughters that are about the age to have their pictures made. It is nice that things are cherished and saved for generations to come.

CurliQ 07-30-2014 04:04 PM

Oh m'gosh! Those are absolutely beautiful.

quiltingcandy 07-30-2014 04:16 PM

nativetexan 07-30-2014 04:30 PM

Judith1005 07-30-2014 06:46 PM

Oh my, they are just beautiful. You do wonderful work.

AngeliaNR 07-30-2014 06:49 PM

So lovely. My daughter is also thirty-three, and I still have a couple of the dresses I smocked for her--we must have been doing it at the same time! I've seen some quilts that include smocked blocks and have been thinking of giving them a try. Thanks for the wonderful memory. :)

NUTMEG10 07-31-2014 02:59 AM

What beautiful work you did. They are gorgeous and so happy they have been well taken care of. Wish that would come back as I love the technique and how beautiful they come out. So girly. girly. Thanks for sharing.

QuiltnNan 07-31-2014 03:36 AM

so beautifully done. and the initials smocking is so unusual.

jcrilley 07-31-2014 05:12 AM

I would "shadow box" frame one of the dresses and hats along with a picture of the little girl wearing it. It would be expensive to do professionally but an absolute treasure and heirloom for your niece.

ladydukes 07-31-2014 06:31 AM

Exquisite! Remarkable!! Beautiful!!! Wow!!!!

quilter68 07-31-2014 06:37 AM

EXQUISITE! Thank you so much for sharing. Thanks for all the work that you did and your sister for saving them. I just love them, all of them.

fayeberry 07-31-2014 07:34 AM

Your work is stunning and such a sweet spirit, to care so for your sister's child. I am sure you are a blessing in her life.

rosiewell 07-31-2014 08:06 AM

so beautiful, I loved smocked dresses when my girls were little!

calla 07-31-2014 08:22 AM

How beautiful, you should be teaching.....I purchased a smocked dress at a sale, hangs in my bathroom on an embellished satin hanger, however it is not as fancy as yours.......what a skill.....calla

Thank you for the idea, I was kind of thinking of doing that for her and I appreciate the encouragement push to do it. Thanks again

oh thank you for that idea too !!!

sailsablazin 07-31-2014 09:22 AM

How beautiful! You have done such a gorgeous job. I would love to put my daughter/granddaughter in one of those dresses. They would be saved for VERY SPECIAL occasions! Why is it that our youth does not appreciate all of the time and effort that goes into making a homemade object, whether it be a quilt or a smocked bonnet and dress?

Maybe future generations will want to wear them.

solstice3 07-31-2014 02:05 PM

Wow! Are you sure your name isn't "Polly Flinders"? I use to buy that brand for my girls. You did beautiful work.

JanieH 07-31-2014 02:58 PM

Those are stunning! And who knows, there may be girls down the road that will be able to wear them!

Truly heirloom quality work!

kathy 07-31-2014 03:17 PM

I love making little girl clothes, never smocked but admire it greatly, those are just adorable!

just_the_scraps_m'am 07-31-2014 03:22 PM

those are just beautiful! I would be afraid to touch them--they look so delicate--what beautiful work! You should be teaching!

carolaug 07-31-2014 03:46 PM

Wow...I would love to beable to make those for my graddaughter. They are all so beautiful!

gramadona 07-31-2014 04:27 PM

OMGsh! These are so beautiful! You need to have one of them framed in a sealed shadow box frame to keep in your sewing area. It's wonderful that your sister kept such care of them. They are a treasure!

needles3thread 07-31-2014 04:40 PM

Very special little dresses. I love them. She will never find more like these.

IBQUILTIN 07-31-2014 06:37 PM

What beautiful work you did and your sister is obviously proud of it too

Mousie 08-01-2014 06:26 AM

oh my gosh! I have always loved smocking!
I never did any for my 3 dd's, bc I didn't know how back then.
These are such beautiful treasures and in such pristine condition.
You can tell they were and still are well loved.
What a precious picture of your niece wearing one.
This is such a beautiful story, it brings a tear. How gorgeous! :)
