My Kenmore dryer has outlasted 3 washers and is still going. I believe it is about 20 years old. But since Sears is having its problems I would be rather cautious about buying another one.

So far happy with a general electric gas dryer. It's about 3 years old. I left our 20 year old Sears set when we moved to another state. The people in this house left their front loader set which was awful. I like the matching washer too, has an agitator, top loader, I can open it while it is filling in case I forget a sock, and it has a water level button so I can keep adding water til it is full.

I have a Maytag top loader washer and electric dryer, a matching set. I have had them for years, not sure how many.

Look at dryers that have the lint filter on the top of the machine. There are several reasons for that: 1) it is easier to clean the filter, no bending down. 2) the drum is usually larger than the drum where the lint filter is seated just inside of the door of the dryer, so you can dry larger loads. Same space requirements, though. 3) The dryer with the lint filter seated just inside of dryer door turns differently and can melt onto the heating elements. If you turn the dryer off before the cycle is over, the heating element may continue to heat and your dryer will overheat. The appliance repair person told me that it happens frequently, but is not considered a defect by the manufacturers. However, I consider it a defect, and replaced my dryer within a day of the problem occurring.

We don't have natural gas where we live, so I am referring to electric dryers. Have no clue if that applies to natural gas dryers.

We have an Amana electric dryer. Works great. Purchased this about 3-4 years ago (I think) and it's going strong. It replaced a 20+ yr Kenmore brand. Purchased the new one from our local appliance store who will price match with the big box stores. Different settings/choices for drying. Would definitely recommend.

I've always had gas dryers until one Christmas all the kids were home and it died. We couldn't find one anywhere so I got an electric. Hated that thing. I sold it on Craig's list after only a couple of years. Gas dries so much faster. I have a Whirlpool now and love it.
I also like the lint trap on the top.

My 4 year old electric GE just went out. I am replacing it with a Whirlpool - I have had good luck with Whirlpool appliances in the past. My house came with new GE appliances - the refrigerator needed repairs in 6 months - at least it was under warranty. I am not impressed with GE quality.

I have Whirlpool Duet front loaders for the last 20 years. No problems with them. I've always had good luck with Whirlpool.

I just replaced my 20 year old washer and dryer that died about a month ago. After doing a lot of research, I went with a Maytag Bravos set. Model # Washer MVWX655DW Dryer MEDX655DW. The washer has a glass top so you can see inside during the wash cycle. It can be opened during the cycle if you forget something. You cannot open the lid during the spin cycle. The dryer has the lint filter is on the top. The washer does not have the tall agitator which I was concerned about, but it is fine. I am very happy with both units.
