If you want to try out the different versions, I know that at least Kindle and Nook software can be downloaded for free to your computer. there are thousands of free books that can be downloaded as well.[/quote]

Where do I find the software to download to try?

I have a pandigital reader they are sold at Best buys I opted for the 9 inch screen for $169 it has so many extra features like an I Pad for a lot less money It is in color also I have gotten many free books from Barnes and Noble on it plus they sell many budget books. I am disabled and have to spend many days in bed so it is wonderful that I can read surf the web e mail ect all from the bed or couch. have only had it for about 3 months but have never had any problems with it

Katia 05-01-2011 08:37 AM

My sweet husband gave me a Kindle for Christmas this past year and I love it. My daughter gave me a great cover for it. I would not use one with out a cover. I am sure I would break it. But I have read more with this then I ever did with actual books. I have a lot of books though, so what do I do with all those, LOL.

What I like most about my Kindle that I never had with actual books is finding new authors. There are so many ebooks out there that were never actually published as real books. Publishers are super picky and sometimes will only publish known authors. But with the Kindle lots of new authors are getting a chance. I just finished a book called Origins by J.A. Konrath. I loved it, it was different and strange, but so fun. The author said that he has tried to get it published for years and got good feed back, but he was not a known author so it was not published till recently I guess. I think this happens with a lot of authors.

Katia, great info!! I didn't know that!!
Thank you :)

I have not purchased one yet as I, too, borrow many books from our library. Though Kindle does not yet work with library books, I heard on the news that they are working to reach an agreement with whomever (not very techie as you can see) so libraries can be equipped to download to Kindle as we as B&N Nook.

quiltwiz 05-01-2011 10:25 AM

I also have a kindle (3G and wi-fi). I love everything about it. I download books from Amazon and can download also to my smartphone. I have compared my Kindle to the Nook and I am sure that I have made the right decision. I don't have the color that the Nook has, but I do not need color to read a book. The main reason for getting a Kindle in the first place was that with my maturing eyes, I could not read a "real book" for very long, but with the size adjustment for the fonts, I have no problem.

Get online and read what other people say in the FAQs for both Kindle and the others. That makes for a great comparison.

GladGrams 05-01-2011 10:32 AM

I have a Nook and my husband has a Sony Reader, we like both of them.

Roberta 05-01-2011 10:51 AM

I received both the Nook and the Kindle as Christmas gifts. The Nook went back and I kept the Kindle and love it. There is a site to download free books that you can use with both units. I love mine. It makes long waits in doctor's office bearable.

galvestonangel 05-01-2011 11:44 AM

I have a Kindle and love it. I started having problems with the battery not fully charging and called them. They are sending me a new Kindle overnight and paperwork for me to send my Kindle back to them. They pay postage. Any electronic can have problems but the customer service I got was over and above. I am very impressed.

pippi65 05-01-2011 12:08 PM

Thanks to ALL I'm gonna go play with them both and tell the hubby what mom wants for her day! Again thanks for your info. Pam

michelehuston 05-01-2011 12:16 PM

I got a Nook for Christmas. I'ts ok. I would not have spent the money on it. I like the feel of the books, to be able to hold it and turn the pages. I honestly had no desire to have one, but dh was so excited that I couldn't take it back to go get fabric instead..I have no compalaints, just its ok.

jburress 05-01-2011 12:34 PM

If you go with the Kindle, e-mail me and I'll send you the address to get free books every day. I haven't bought a book in forever. I have so many free books to read, I can't keep up with them!

I have a Pandigital. LOVE IT! It comes with wi-fi. I can download from the library, plus all the free ebooks from Barnes and Noble. It also has a calendar and several alarms. I usually pack 5 books if going away for a week, now I just take this. My husband has the Nook (not the color). He got it before I got my ereader, and wishes he had the Pandigital. It was a lot cheaper.

The only bad thing about the Pandigital is the lack of cases for it. So after searching the internet, I made one. Here is where I found the directions.

I have the pocket (5"x7") e-reader from sony. (Pink of course!) and I just love it. It is the perfect size to carry in the smaller purses I have to use now. If I use a large purse, I fill a large purse. I bought the hard cover to go over it, and will be making it a quilted cover as soon as I figure out what to use for batting. I don't want the fibers creating problems. Mine has to be charged with the computer, but I don't mind. I just charge it while I read my email. It holds many hours of reading on a single charge and has an automatic sleep feature, to save energy. I think it holds somewhere around 1,200 books? I can also delete books as I finish them, so I will never run out of memory. All this for less than $100.

VernaL 05-01-2011 01:31 PM

I have the smaller less expensive Kindle and I love it! I can download books from either the Kindle or Amazon and then take it with me where ever I go. The books are so much cheaper and many are free. It has been rated no. 1 by Consumer Reports. I can read on it for hours and don't have any eye stress. It doesn't have color, but I don't feel I need it. It does have voice if the ebook offers it. You will be glad you have it.

GGrammie 05-01-2011 01:55 PM

i got Nook...not in color, but okay for me.

I love it and always have at least 2 books preloaded.

Cybrarian 05-01-2011 02:00 PM

The kindle doesn't seem to work with most or all public library software programs. It may be that the Kindle software is too proprietary. Nook and Nookcolor are getting high marks from textbook and magazine companies. Try several and get a pamphlet or go on line to compare features and prices. Also look for reviews on customer service. A plus with the Nooks is having a store and people to help you. If not super techie this is a consideration.

I bought a Soney Reader about a year ago but am not happy with it. I think I will buy a Nook. I'm interested in what everyone else says

Nikki and Co. 05-01-2011 04:42 PM

I have the Nook Color and I just love it. My favorite feature is that it is backlit which allows me to read in bed without a light on and it doesn't disturb DH.

virg 05-01-2011 04:53 PM

Just got a kindle. It was on sale at amazon. I love it. I love it because you can pick letter size. and shop on it too.
The size is perfect.

sandybuttons 05-01-2011 05:41 PM

Take your lap top to the library and they will help you, thats what I did they were very nice about not being tech smart

OHSue 05-01-2011 05:45 PM

I have had a Kindle for over a year. I would never have guessed how much I would come to love this thing. I think the Amazon CS is great, never had a single problem. Love the ability to sample books.
Just recently Amazon has anounced that it will be working with Overdrive and you will be able to get Library books on the Kindle soon.

lheartsl 05-01-2011 06:02 PM

Hello Pippi, My husband got me from HSN and it is just great. I can use it like a laptop, play games or read books on it. The name of mine is Nextbook. It has a 8 inch screen and is all touch. I have had mine since Christmas and now wonder how I did without it.

tsnana2000 05-01-2011 07:39 PM

I have both a kindle and a nook. I like the kindle better. Just my preference. I like the idea that you can carry lots of books in one little ereader.

TexasSunshine 05-01-2011 09:31 PM

I got a Sony for Christmas, like it.

CMARAS1234 05-01-2011 11:04 PM

Grambi 05-02-2011 05:07 AM

I bought the Nook with WiFi and 3G a couple of years ago and my husband gave me a NookColor for Christmas. I love them both. I have loaned my first Nook to my sister and kept it on my acct so she could read the books I have bought so far.

I spent a lot of time online researching before I decided on the Nook over the Kindle. The Nook has a "lend me" feature where books can be loaned to friends and family who also have a Nook (specific rules apply) and Kindle doesn't allow loaning. Our library (and most others) is starting an ebook loaning program which won't work on Kindle but will on Nook and several others. It has something to do with propietary issues with Kindle or Amazon. I love the backlit screen of my NookColor as I do most of my reading at night in bed. The NookColor has regular updates to the software and seems to get more and more like a little computer with each upgrade. I love the touch-screen dictionary and the ability to bookmark pages or passages. You can also sent passages to friends via facebook and such.
But my MAIN reason for choosing the Nook is because I can go down to any Barnes and Noble if I have questions or issues and talk to a human face-to-face. That is really important to me (although I haven't had issues to date). The B&N closest to me hase a weekly tutorial/forum group meeting for Nook users.

Anyway--I have never regretted my choice. Good luck making yours!

The Kindle does allow lending a book now with specific rules as Nook does.

rahaube 05-02-2011 01:25 PM

I have a Kindle and I love it. My sister has an ipad with several e-book applications. She likes the Kindle first. It is easier to find and download books for the Kindle, according to her. There are a lot of free books you can get from Amazon Kindle Store for the Kindle as well.

Thank you for the correction. I didn't realize that they now allowed that. Yes Nook does have specific rules that can be found online.

I also have a kindle. I love it. I have purchased one for my son, my daughter in law my hubby and my aunt. They all love them.

love my kindle!!!!!!!!!!!!

romanojg 06-27-2011 09:04 AM

I have the black and white 3g Nook by Barnes and Noble and also the color Nook. I loved my black and white one so much the only thing on my Christmas list was the color and Im so glad I did. You can put anything on it; from books to magazines, pdf docs, all office docs, music, pictures and so on. They just came out with a new app that allows me to use it like an organizer where I can store and update my calendar, contact list, bills to pay, things to do, etc. There are lots of apps. My grandson loves the "read to me" feature so that he can listen to his books and I even love to buy him books because the color is so vivid; its great. I store quilting patterns, notes ect on mine. You can get ebooks from just about anywhere because Barns and Noble has it compatible w/mulitble formats; not just theirs as others have done. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat. Customer service in the store is the best and thier extended warranty is fix or replace which is great. Hope this helps

You can also go to borders, barnes and noble and sony and download a free reader from each of them to save on your pc and get their free books and buy from them. There are probably others out there that have free ereaders for your pc but these are the ones that I know about

romanojg 06-27-2011 09:06 AM

I already posted to this but just let me say ditto. At first I thought I was reading from my own reply a few months back. I think the Nook is great.

Check your library. Now many have free new books for kindle as well as other readers

I have a Kindle and I love it! It reads just like a paper back. You can log on to the Kindle website and have books in the blink of an eye. You can read outside or anywhere in bright light without a glare. You aren't able to do that with many others. If you read in bed you might want to get one of the little lights that attached to the cover, you will need good light to see at night, just as a book. It's great! I hear the Nook is a good one too! Not sure how well it is in bright light though.
