I made those when I was into cake decorating. They are a lot of fun to make. Sugar and water combine like wet sand, they are molded allowed to dry outside a little then scraped inside to create the cavity and dried completely. The decorations I used were piped out of royal icing and it was used as glue also. Food coloring created the colors. They will last as long as they stay dry.

My niece made them by blowing out the egg's contents through a pin hole and then cutting an oval hole with manicure scissors. They were beautiful.

My mother made them from real eggs and cards. She also made them for Christmas, birthdays, valentine's day, etc. she has been dead for 5 years and I treasure all the ones that I have and put them out and think of her. I cry when one breaks.

Oh, memories! Still have one from my brother and it's at least 50 years old. I keep it wrapped securely and then get it out every Easter to enjoy.

We used to get those when we were young -- I loved them. I had one for the longest time, but I'm not sure I still have it. I think I managed to find them for my kids when they were little, but even then they were hard to find.

I think See's Candies in Calif. still makes them, but they are pretty expensive, but they are really nice. I have made my own also with a mold and colored sugar. They aren't hard to do, but take time to dry.

I used to make them to sell. alot I would use a photo of the child the egg was for. It was a blast to make. Sold a few hundred in my time, YEARS ago LOL!!! Forgot all about them will have to go thru all my boxes for cake decortating and find the plastic egg molds.

I think I want to try this. When I was young, my grandmother made them for my siblings & I every year. We adored them, and she made such intricate scenes. Of course we destroyed them by eating them...this is something I've never attempted. I'll have to get the plastic egg molds though. I would love to make these for my little neighbor girls.
