We have a massage therapist come to work every couple of months and give free massages. (I think the campus pays her to come) Anyway, today I had a massage and she worked on my shoulder that has been sore and bothering me. She advised me to get some epson salts and soak a towel in hot epson salts water and it may draw out the soreness.

I was surprised. I thought epson salts was some kind of old fashioned, old-wife's tale. (and I am not all that young at all!)

Do any of you use epson salts? Does it really work? How do you use it? How much salts to how much water?

Thanks!

Darlene 11-18-2010 12:07 PM

I have heard it being used for bad feet.

dreamer2009 11-18-2010 12:12 PM

I use 1-cup in the lavender bath salts I make and use every night.
I was in bad accident and it helps to draw the pain out of the muscles and I sleep better.
I slide down in tub til shoulders are under water.

I buy Epson Salt by the 10 pound bag. As a nurseryman, my late DH used hundreds of pounds of it every year for the plants. It is not a sodium, and it supplies much needed magnesium to plants and animals and humans. In fact, some bottled waters that say they have "minerals" in it also have Epsom Salt..usually called Magnesium Sulfate. Check them out. You don't need to take so much you have what is called "Explosive decompression" but need just a little.

To start with, when I find it on sale, I do as DH used to, I hurl lots of it about in the back yard, making sure that all the plants in pots get their fair share.

Go to the Internet and check out all the ways you can use it.

I love Espon Salt whenever I need it. I never soaked the towel thing, though. I usually put a lot of salt in the bath tub and just soak myself in it. For any sprain or any kind of soreness, it is wonderful. If it were my shoulder, I would still get in the full tub and just slide down to my neck. It doesn't take long, either. Ten or fifteen minutes is good. I usually stay until the water gets cold.

I remember mom making us soak our cuts and stuff in warm water with Epson salt. Maybe I will have to find some and check out if it works for me!!!

Epson Salts if great for relieving soreness. A soaking for a spring or pulled muscle feels good. My grandmother used it for many things. When I was a teen I took a very, very small amount daily, never had any acne or skin problems. Again Grandmother advise.
Also, use epson salts for plants

JAGSD 11-18-2010 12:30 PM

I am too a Epsom Salts Soaker. I never measure just dump it in while tub is filling, it was recommended by my Chiropractor. I have some super arthritis in my shoulder and neck and it along with Biofreeze does wonders for both! I would highly recommend it. I also started using Epsom Salts on my outdoor flowers and they just love it.

I guess I had better stop at the store on my home and get some epson salts! Thanks for your ideas and thoughts!

I use a 4lb bag in as warm as water as I can stand that is healthy for me. and just soak in it. I helps a lot to ease my back pain.

dellareya 11-18-2010 12:38 PM

When I was growing Epsom Salts was a cure all for us. My mother would buy it in huge bags. As a grown up I still use it for many things.

sueisallaboutquilts 11-18-2010 12:52 PM

A lot of the old remedies really do work. I would tend to take the massage therapists advice on this one!
Hope you feel better. What a great thing they're doing where you work! :)

cjomomma 11-18-2010 01:07 PM

My DD who is 16 uses Epsom saltz all the time when she takes a bath. She has a lot of health problems and it helps her to relax. I also buy her lavender body wash. She doesn't handle stress very well and these help her.

I was raised up using it and still do for sore muscles and sprains. My daughter uses it in her nail tech stuff. It has a chart on the box it comes in. I get it in the pharmacy at walmart.

ckcowl 11-18-2010 01:29 PM

no bathroom cupboard is complete without a box of epsom salts. and when you pick up yours read the box, there are all kinds of benificial uses for the salts.

bluteddi 11-18-2010 01:30 PM

I get mine at the Dollar Store.... my tomatoes love it as much as I do... When I have sore stiff muscleo r a sprain.. as other have said.. into a tub of hot water I soak!

mollymct 11-18-2010 01:43 PM

I also love epsom salts, especially lavendar, in the bath. Wonderful after for aches and sore muscles after a hard workout!! Someone mentioned Biofreeze and that is awesome after a massage. I need to find a source to buy from for home!

wvdek 11-18-2010 02:31 PM

Epsom salts is great for all kinds of things, most are mentioned here. I use 1 cup of Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 cups of Epsom salts in teh tub with water as warm as I can stand it. Easae in up to chin and soak for as long as water stays warm. Then jump in bed and cover up. The combination draws out the poisons, eases sore and aching muscles, and is very relaxing. Sleep like a baby.

ROL Obviously, the trick here is to use a LITTLE on the houseplants???? I THOUGHT I'd read you can use it on houseplants....so I put some on the tomato plant I had in my window sill --- within 3 days I didn't need to worry about watering it any more!!!!

Check with a chiropractor, that's where I get mine from. Also have seen it at Medegap pharmacies.

virtualbernie 11-18-2010 03:47 PM

Epsom salt has a gadrillion uses :D When my son was younger he ws highly allergic to poison ivy (and probably still is), I just soaked him in a bath of Epsom salts and it dried it right up!

oatw13 11-18-2010 04:42 PM

Epsom salts are actually great for several uses. I give my son epsom salt baths. They can be very calming, especially for kids with ADD or autism. They also seem to help with moderate digestive issues. They also help draw toxins out of the body, including some heavy metals.

Here is a neat article that explains many uses for epsom salts:

http://www.care2.com/greenliving/use...ful-ways.html#

You can also use them in the garden, too!

I can't imagine what happened here, I've never had any problems with tomatoes and Epson salts. (Rarely have any inside though)
I usually toss a handful around in the dirt where I'll plant them and then some in the middle of the growing season. Usually too busy to bother at other times of the year. On some African Violets I put a pinch or so on them and water it in. They've several years old now. The Amaryllis grow wonderfully with it, and are looking good even now.

Mimito2 11-18-2010 07:28 PM

If you have a splinter or a boil put a bandaid with epsom salts dampened with milk on it overnight and it will draw out the poison. I have used them on acne bumps on my sons backs when they were teenagers. No more trips to the dermatologist.

gmaybee 11-18-2010 07:36 PM

I can remember my mom always having a box of Epsom salt around as I grew up, but I don't remember what she used it for.

teacherbailey 11-19-2010 03:21 AM

I have used it to make scented bath salts....2 cups of Epsom salts, 3 Tablespoons of glycerin, something for scent (we did this with Kindergarteners so we used kitchen extracts...strawberry and vanilla were the favorites!); I think we used 2 tsp of extract per recipe and then some food coloring. Mix it all up and pour some under running water.....Divine bath!

Lneal 11-19-2010 03:38 AM

I use Epson Salt to draw out infection when I get an ingrown toe nail. Works great!! Just soak my foot for 20 min in salt and fairly warm water.

Janiemae 11-19-2010 04:41 AM

I'm going to have to try this! I have been having ankle and foot pain for a week. Twenty some years ago I broke my ankle and have sprained it many times. I've been trying to stretch it and use medications, but nothing is working very well yet.

mcar 11-19-2010 05:17 AM

Magnesium is an over looked mineral by most of us.I have found the Slow Release Magnesium pills help my restless leg syndrome at night before going to sleep. I think magnesium is in the Dead Sea formulas too. You have seen photos of people soaking in the Dead Sea I'm sure .My grandmother's sister and husband had a hot springs hotel(1910-50) in Montana many years ago. They would bring people on stretchers off the train to soak in the waters.....must remember the living conditions of the time...lack of central heating could cause so many additional health problems.

retiac 11-19-2010 05:19 AM

I get my epson salts in the pharmacy isle at walmart, and soak in it for fibro it really helps.

My MIL owned a natural food store for years. She had a bath soak recipe that used Epsom salt, french green clay, borax and essential oil. It soothed the muscles and softened and detoxified the skin. It was amazing. A long bath before bed and you sleep like a baby.

quiltluvr 11-19-2010 11:21 AM

I'm a convert. When my grandparents talked about it when I was younger I thought they were making it all up. What did I know? Now that I'm a lot older, I swear by it. I couldn't live without it when I worked retail being on my feet, pounding the pavement. It's a staple now in my first aid supplies.

CarrieAnne 11-19-2010 12:06 PM

I guess I should try some!

Murphy 11-19-2010 12:26 PM

Yes it does work. Box usually tells you, but google on the web and there are many articles about it.

Only know that I've learned to use it for my horses feet when they were laminitic -- it helped draw out the abcesses and such. I've soaked my own feet with it since then -- it helps. I always keep Epson Salts in our bathroom.

Don't know -- but they do help.

This article states 13 ways to use epsom salts - I'm sure there are more. We used it for a completely different medical purpose when we were children.

MY DH uses it daily for his leg. He had a severe blood clot in his lower leg, 12 years ago. When he skips a few days his leg begins to swell and turn dark at the site of the old clot. Epsom salts allows him to continue to do the work he loves. He is a construction site flagger, and would be crushed if he had to give it up. I can't say enough about how Epsom salts work for many things. They can even be used as a laxative, but be careful, you don't want to overdo this use!

VernaL 11-19-2010 08:22 PM

When I do a lot of yard work, I pour it on a very warm tub and sink down to my neck in it. It really helps with the sore muscles. I stay till it gets cold and get out. It really is good stuff.
